sea turtle done

This was done on a board that was painted blue, with various clear and blue glass. Since taking this picture, I've redone the turtle grout with tan paint. It's much better! But I don't have it here any more to take another picture.

That is SO pretty!! LOVE the glass you used on the turtle shell....makes it look 3-D in the pic! Great Job!!

I have a Frugana that is simply wonderful. I didn't realized what these plants were until the middle of last winter---the previous owner of the property had planted a male, an unidentified female and a female tagged as Frugana. The identified female produced only a few berries last year and this year, but the Frugana was loaded both years. The taste is very much to my liking---sweet and astringent like a very tart citrus juice. I don't add much sugar when I make juice for me as I like astringent but my family prefers much more added sugar. A little goes a long way, and I find having some juice on hand in the fridge is quite refreshing added to a glass of cold water. The bushes are about 7 feet tall, are in well-drained sandy loam soil and we haven't done a thing with them except mow around them. Their gray-green leaves are quite pretty--especially with the orange berries. I'm guessing they are somewhere around 6-7 years old. They have impressive thorns but someone gave me the tip to just snip the berry clusters off and freeze them. This works like a charm; the berries are easy to knock off and I don't even need to wear gloves. I don't know why the second female is not producing much fruit, but she's pretty enough and effortless enough that she can stay. I am so glad the previous owner left these!

Gosh, thank you all very much! Connie, you are too nice to me, I'm getting the big head! lol Ginger, you, too! This all happened on the Gulf, at Indian Rocks Beach, south a little bit from Clearwater. Imagine my surprise to find a sea turtle nest next to "our" sand dune the first morning we were there! If we had gone out to the beach at 10:30 the night before, right after we arrived, like I wanted to but DH was toooo tired, we might have seen her digging it or laying the eggs! As it was, just finding it the next AM was very exciting. Then to find out that 147 babies hatched out 60 days later, very cool! I felt like they were MY babies! lolol I spent yesterday working on my tin, and I made 2 new turtles, one to replace the original one. Today I'll make my sand and then paint it when it's dry. It'll be done soon. Then I'll need a new project. lol

Thanks Calmaity, I do think mosaicing the side really did give a 3d effect, almost like she is crawling off the table. She thought it was too dirty , Slow, LOL. actually I had spent quite some time trying to clean that mess. Just bought another 6' table since I don't have enough room to set up my beetle bits I do love the deep blue purple glass on the sign, need to buy more of it, I just love all irridescent glass Allyson, glad you like her. Slow and Cindi, hmm, next projects is the backsplash in our bathroom with the glow in the dark tile, very simple job of just a few rows to keep the water from splashing on the walls. and then I want to do the seashell light fixture like Klinger.. and so many other things i want to do not enough time in the day

Thank you, thank you, Nice it's sand not frit. Curb, good eye, it's 3-D! I raised the center of the shell with a layer of glass and slanted the next layer to blend. And I think looking through the clear glass at the painted back ground is what gives it more 3-d appearance. Barb, the edges are sand, glued with mod podge, shells glued with Amazing Goop, and beach glass... The sand was re-coated with mod to seal it. The edge was done in lots of layers, that was the most fun!This project kept me awake many nights - planning!

I am agreeing with everything said here. This is AWESOME! How did you ever come up with the idea? Your choice of colors and textures is incredibly realistic. This piece is the same caliber of art I saw last March at the SAMA Conference.

I do not know how I kept missing this post. Your sea turtle and background are WONDERFUL!! So realistic. Thanks for the information on how you did it too. Always good to have things like this tucked away in the old brain of mine.

Wow that is so pretty. The sand around the edges sounds like it was hard work. I love the colors on the turtles shell and the placement of the shells around the edges.

You've all been more than kind! Thank you. The edges were quite easy. Spread glue, sprinkle sand, glue shells, and recoat sand with glue. Actually it was much easier that the glass work. Just time consuming because of the layers. I'm so glad all of you like it!

Crafty, this was part builders sand.(A friend had some handy.) And each time we would go the the beach, I would bring home a small bag. Any kind of sand will work. On one project I even mixed it with paint, spread it to dry, and got a nice color to it.
