Lights and outlets not working after storm

We had a huge storm last night. The lights flickered but stayed on.

After the storm, we noticed the garage door would not open and had no power to it. The receptacles in the garage and the laundry room light will not work.

They are all on the same circuit and same breaker.

The breaker never tripped.

I turned the breaker off and back on and still no power.

Our house is 6 years old.

My favorite electrician has moved out of state.

Can someone lead me in the right direction as to what steps I need to take to solve the problem?

All those receptacles are likely on a GFCI (and if you house is more than a few years old, probably all on the same GFCI). Look in those locations and any bathrooms or outside receptacles for an outlet with "TEST" and "RESET" buttons on it and press the RESET.

I reset all the GFCI in the house.I will double check in case I missed some. Still no power to the light and receptacles.

I do have a porch GFCI that will not reset.With the heavy sheets of rain, I assume it may have tripped due to moisture. It is on a different breaker but it is not far from the garage.

Would a ceiling fixture have been on a circuit with a GFCI
receptacle? What is throwing me off is the light fixture not working.Both the light fixture and receptacles are marked in the box as being on the same breaker.

This morning I did purchase a new breaker for the non-working circuit and a new GFCI for the porch.
I have not installed them yet.

Very good information, chas045. Thanks. I have always suggested everyone to get a generator. Weather problems will be with us for the next century. You need to power up your heating system in the winter. Pipes bursting in the winter can cost you thousands. You need to run your water pump if you have a well. You need to keep your refrigerator going. It's good to have lights, computer, phones and internet. I am not advocating this, because it is illegal. Back-feeding with a generator is the cheapest way to go to power up half of your house. However, I always find it difficult to understand with the main technical reason that back-feeding can kill a lineman. A professional lineman takes all kinds of precaution when he is working. If you don't turnoff your main breaker, you simply cannot start your generator. Your generator will be attempting to power up your entire neighborhood and all the street lights. Repeat: Don't do it, just use a heavy duty extension cord. It is not that painful to use an extension cord for a few days. A 1,000 watt generator is about $200. How big a generator do you need? Incandescent light about 100 watts CFL light, 25 watts Computer about 100 watts Phone charger, 1 watt Small electric fan, 50 watts Microwave, 600 to 1,250 watts Toaster oven, about 1,800 watts Refrigerator, Freezer, depending on size, from 800 watts Attic fan, 350 watts Forced air heating system fan, 500 watts Refrigerator, 20 cf, 800 watts TV, 250 watts Air conditioner, about 1 watt/BTU rating Hair dryer, up to 1,850 watts Electric oven, forget about it. Takes too much power. Electric water heater, 2,500 watts to 4,500 watts. Three other important things to keep in mind, besides capacity of a generator. 1. full-load running time 2. Noise level - quiet generators are more expensive. But you don't want your neighbors complaining. 60 dbs is very quiet. You will get lots of complains at about 80 dbs. 3. weight - A good 2,000 watt generator can be light enough to go camping with, others can be very heavy to transport. dcarch

Looking for quilt pattern After the Storm

Sharon thanks for the link it is nice to be able to see the work in progress. I was wondering how to get the fabrics just right for the pattern to be correct. Is she really using 21 different fabrics? The quilt I did last summer used 12 and I had a hard time picking out 12 fabrics. Rosa thanks for the video links. I will need to watch them on my lap top at the library. I have a very slow internet connection and lately it has been so slow that I can't even get on line. Hopefully in the next day or two I can go to the library to watch the video. I have learned how to download them to my lap top and then I can watch them over and over again if I need to at home without going through the internet. I may need to have a pattern that will tell me how many colors and how to place them together for everything to line up and how much of each fabric. I don't want to short change myself on the fabrics. I did that last year. I purchased what I thought was enough and a little extra. Then my brother got cancer and I took care of him. By the time I was able to cut out the quilt and start to sew the fabric stores didn't have the fabric. I was able to look on line and find it and how lucky I was to locate the two pieces that I needed. Sharon thanks for finding the pattern on line. Seems like when ever I do a google search I seldom come up with what I want. I tried last night and again this morning. No luck and I come here and you have searched and found a picture.

The GFCI "stopped working" during the winter. You most likely mean that it no longer provided power. You shorted its wires and failed to trip a breaker. I'm going to bet that the original failure wasn't the GFCI itself, but in the wiring leading to it. If a non-contact tester shows voltage on both sides, I'm going to further make the guess that the neutral conductor is broken somewhere. Your two-wire tester will likely show voltage between hot and a known valid ground. ("known valid", in this case, means "not necessarily the ground wire in the gfci box.")

After turning off the breaker, remove the cover plate, pull out the outlet and inspect the connections. There are basically three ways to make the connections. The quick connect devices have spring-loaded connectors that you just push the stripped wire into. They are frowned upon as problematic. There are connectors that you push the wire into and then tighten a screw. Lastly, there are devices that have only the old-fashioned and reliable screws. Look for loose wire connections, and burn marks. Smell the outlet and see if it smells burned. After you get done with that one, you might want to start checking your other junction boxes. It is a PIA, but if it were my house, I would sleep better. Keep in mind, however, that the reason all splices are made in boxes is to keep the house from burning down because of bad connections. Getting a book on basic home electrical might not be a bad idea. They are common in stores and you could check out one from the library.

The porch GFCI is likely your problem. Or there is another GFCI in the garage that is hidden behind the pile of boxes that have been there since you moved in.

With the exception of certain bath fixtures, no lighting is ever required to be on GFCI, but who knows how your house might be wired.

LOL! I think my husband is glad it happened as now we may have to clean up the garage for an electrician! All the boxes are my stuff and he is tired of tripping over them!
When I get home I will look behind the boxes for a GFCI I may have missed.

That is what I thought but when building the house, I did have some problems with the electrical that were caught early on so I wonder too, how it might be wired.

I finally found a GFCI behind the heaviest boxes!
It was tripped and would not reset.
I replaced it and I have power again.

last year
I live in a manufactured home, half the lights went out. first they had intermin 3-5 seconond flickers about every 10

minutes or so. then went out vompletely. it cost me dearly for someone to locate the lroblem and no one could.. we just had a wild wind storm of like 55 moh and the entire block went dark with no lights. this morning, something told me to try the lights and they wirked. i believe there is some sort if breaker under the place that they dont tell you about.
