FDH = Inability to plan ahead

This is my vent about FDH's dumba55ery, which doesn't even remotely compare to Nicksmom's DH's dumba55ery, but ruined my night nonetheless.

You all know how A__ is a disaster after he's been at GM's (cranky, hyper, attitude problem, and often unwashed and/or hungry)

So imagine my dismay when FDH comes home from work with A__'s backpack, but no A__. They stopped at GM's to pick up a refill of A__'s meds, and A__ asked to stay at GM's to play with his (mean-spirited, bad influence of a) cousin until soccer.

FDH, not thinking ahead, said OK.

I was pissed because he had soccer at 7-8, so we don't get home from that until 8:15 or so, but bedtime on school nights is 8:30 with 30 minutes of reading.

He obviously needs a shower after soccer, so that bumps bedtime back a bit on soccer nights - tack on 20 minutes.

A__ had homework tonight, so that had to get done after soccer because of being at GM's afterschool when he should have done it - tack on another 20 minutes.

GM didn't give him a nutritious supper (Oreos and chicken wings are NOT a meal, IMO) so he was running on empty after soccer and he needed a snack - tack on another 20 minutes.

So now it's 9:30 by the time he gets into bed... Which is not the end of the world, but he was in a FOUL mood with a bad attitude and it was a miserable evening for us all because of it.

The "D" in FDH is NOT short for "dear" today.

Me: "Why didn't you think ahead to that A__ would have to do his homework and have a snack after soccer and he would be a bear?"

FDH: "I don't know. I just don't think of those things."

Garghgh! Why the h3ll not!? I've only been parenting A__ for a year-ish, and I can think of this stuff! He's been at it for 9 years, why can't he?

Ohforchrissake!

(Did anyone catch on to that I'm annoyed? LOL)

Hey Ceph - glad to hear you had such a great day!! ;-)

Take heart - my DH, a very smart, thoughtful man, has these moments as well.
They just leave me shaking my head thinking 'Did you not think this through? Did you just stop at point A and forget to consider B through F that were right there in your face?' I think the answer is yes. Perhaps FDH had a tiring day, and the thought of being able to just go home alone and watch TV, take a nap or whatever was so appealing that B through F went right out the window. I think it's situations like these that are the major cause of DH's brainfarts. Is it a man thing? Who knows.

Guess I better send you the lamp, huh?

You're right...it doesn't quite measure up to my DH's, but nonetheless...

I do think it's a y-linked chromosomal problem.

And nothing makes me more mad than when he says "I don't know...". I'm calling BS on that! You DO know...cuz' your not stupid....USUALLY!!!

You can't tie a preemergent weed controller to a date on the calendar. There has been a LOT of discussion about this topic over the years. For awhile, recognizing that timing was critically important to the success of the product, there was not much more than lamenting the inability to predict the time. Then one of the gurus suggested using one of Mother Nature's "whispers" to tell. The blooming of the forsythia plant was the time. Well, not everyone has forsythia. My personal refinement on timing is to apply it after the soil temps hit 50 degrees AND a spring rainstorm hits. The soil has to be warm enough and there has to be sufficient, sustained moisture for crabgrass to germinate. I strongly suspect these conditions precede the blooming of the forsythia, but I'm one who does not have that plant to go by. I do have a cherry tree down the road that always blooms in Feb, so I go by that. Then again I don't have a crabgrass problem so I don't use preemergents. If you use the shampoo two times separated by two weeks, you won't need the aerator. Normal soil is soft when wet and hard when dry. But it should soften again when it gets wet. So called, compacted soil, does not soften when wet. The problem that prevents the soil from softening is the lack of an adequate population of beneficial fungi in the soil. Deep watering with a little soap will create the environmental conditions to foster the rapid growth of these microbe helpers. Use only clear shampoo. The cloudy stuff has oils in it that do not help. My personal opinion is that spraying insecticide because you think you might have a problem is not helpful. There is an organic solution to grubs. It is called beneficial nematodes. These little guys bring an insect disease to the grubs and paralyze them. Then they feed on the insects and procreate. I get BN locally but the original source is this place in Colorado. Apply them with a hose-end sprayer. But first, apply about 3/4-inch of water (or a couple days of rainfall). The BN must have a film of water to move on. They cannot move in dry soil. So first get the soil wet, then apply the BN, then finish with another 1/4-inch of water. Milorganite is fine. I never use it because it has more heavy metals in it than alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow) and alfalfa is lower cost. Probably the reason you did not see any greening effect is you were starting with virgin soil. By next June the soil will be depleted enough to see a greening effect as well as the turf becoming more dense. Here is a demonstration photo showing the effect of alfalfa pellets on a zoysia lawn. This apparently is a very effective photo. I have had clerks at the local feed store tell me about more and more people coming in to get alfalfa pellets for their lawn. The alfalfa was applied in May 2011 and the photo taken in June. Organic fertilizers typically don't show results for 3 full weeks. If you are really indifferent about the soil test, then I would go to Logan Labs. You will get a better read on that test. If you search Google for "logan labs, andy, morpheuspa" you will find a place where you can get guru level help for free. They have been reading LL soil tests for many years. Do not add more topsoil unless you need to change the way your yard drains...because topsoil WILL change the way your yard drains. If you don't start with it right up against the house, then water will drain toward the house. If you do not have 4 full inches of foundation visible below the sill plate on your house, then you should be removing topsoil instead of bringing new soil in. The sill plate is the top of your foundation where the ground floor starts. As you can tell, I am not a fan of topsoil. Oh, and it always has weeds in it. When I need "topsoil" to fill a low spot, I get a local product that is 50/50 sand and "compost." What it really is is half sand and half fresh horse dung. That stuff is hotter than a pistol when it's delivered. Weed seeds cook off in such hot conditions for any amount of time. Plus the sand is very easy to deal with, spreads easily with no clods, and takes roots well. Compost is nice if you can get it for free. Use no more than 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet of lawn. For gardens you can pile it deep, but lawns will smother underneath compost. I see it in my neighborhood every year. There is one lawn that has not recovered in several years. Another keeps repeating the mistake every other year. Their lawn almost completely recovered from an app last spring before the grass stopped growing last week or so. It is sad to see the huge emphasis on compost by the radio show garden experts. They seem to recommend 2 cubic yards per thousand. That will smother even a bermuda lawn. In my neighborhood compost costs about $75 per yard to have it delivered. That means $75 per 1,000 square feet. Or I can apply alfalfa for about $5 per 1,000 square feet. I get a huge bang for the buck applying the alfalfa and almost nothing from compost. Add that to the agony of spreading compost and the possibility of smothering the lawn, and I just keep away from it. I can apply 15 apps of alfalfa for the cost of compost.

Son's inability to deal with financial things

My son is 20 years old and will be a junior this fall. He is very organized and responsible, and he still ran up substantial banking fees. He misunderstood and thought the automatic transfers from savings to checking were free. Anyway, here are my suggestions. First, check with the college - it's possible all the university fees, etc. can be paid online. At my son's school, students have an online account that can be used to pay for tuition, housing, parking, all school fees, meal plans, and even books (if they're purchased at the university bookstore). My son gives me his account number and password and I pay for everything but his meals and spending money online. As far as apartment rent is concerned, you could either pay that yourself, force your son to live on campus, or tell him he has to live at home if he can't manage manage his money. At my son's college, most kids live on campus so all their housing is prepaid. I love this arrangement. If my son runs out of money, then he still has a dorm roof over his head, his tuition and books are already paid. If he runs out of money, then he can't go out with his friends or he has to eat peanut butter and ramen noodle soup - so it's not my problem if he mismanages his money. Some other thoughts - some kids do better if they have less free time on their hands rather than more. My son's lowest GPA was the semester he had a lot of free time. He had a lot of time for fun and got distracted. He is much more focused if he's busy. So perhaps your son might do better if he had a part time job? Also, some kids do much better if they have to pay for part of their school themselves, not just spending money. If you feel that part of your son's problem is immaturity, you might look into something like Americorps. We have some friends whose son seemed a little immature to me, and their son spent a year in Americorps before college. He matured a lot while in that program, and is now doing fine and attending college in California and doing well. Perhaps a year off in a structured program might help. I know opinions may differ on this, but to me, teenagers going off to college, incurring some bank fees, running of money, etc. - those are part of the learning experience for many teens. As long as it's not a chronic problem, I don't worry about it. Whatever mistakes my son made, he's mostly worked and paid me back for any extra expense (he has the blisters on his hands this summer to prove it). And he didn't keep making the same mistakes over and over - he learned from each mistake the first time, fixed it and moved on. I say prepay all his important expenses, and if he runs out of money and has to eat ketchup and crackers then so be it. If he doesn't learn from that, then maybe he needs to live at home. I hope you and your son find something that works well for you.

That's not what is happening with Ashley's DH (from what I can tell) or my DH though. So why are you harping on that? My DH did make a choice not to pursue his rights. He is not going to FORCE his DD to spend time with him. Do you think it would be more healthy for DD to be told by her mother "you could be doing __________ but instead your dad doesn't care about what you want to do, he's going to make you ___________ instead". Do you think that would make their relationship better? Should Ashley's DH continue to drive and spend $400 a pop for 1.5 hours of face time? Should my DH go to court, get the visitation enforced and MAKE SD spend half time here? Their order is 50/50.... this is her homestate. Should SD be forced to quit her school and attend a school in her CS state? See, FD, I think what you don't comprehend is that you have been relatively "in charge" of your DD and have no understanding of any other way. My father NEVER told me anything bad about my mother when I was growing up. I DID think he didn't want me. But looking back I can see that so much conflict was because of BM. My dad just told me the other day that when he had me, my mom "forced" him to take my stepsister too, and that we fought all the time. So, if he didn't want to take her too, my mom would tell me "you can go to dads, or we're going to __________" and of course I would tell dad that I'd see him another time. Because a lot of my childhood when I went to dad's house, mom and family did the MOST FUN THINGS EVER. Like travel to a super fun location. Or do an activity with girl scouts that I couldn't make up, so everyone would have the badge but me. PO1, of COURSE NCP's can do alienation. ANYONE can. That's why DH tries really hard not to say anything to SD that could be construed as negative about her mom. It has nothing to do with not upsetting BM and everything to do with trying to make SD have a good childhood. My DH is trying his hardest. You may have another way of doing things. I may have another way of doing things. It doesn't mean any of them are right or wrong. Do you think the kid would suffer more or less if their parents were in an ugly custody battle? Do you think the CP would be more or less inclined to dump their BS on a kid? Do you think the kid would be more willing to see NCP if they were FORCED and they knew it was enforced, or if they choose to do it on their own? Just in general, kids prefer their mothers when they are young. They want to defend their mothers. They feel safer with their mothers. I don't think any of us know what it's like to be a father.

Curiously, and I've said this before on this forum, I don't mind folks bringing me floor plans. Likely I'll be looking at them differently than the owner anyway, more of a relationship diagram than as a floor plan. The difference in what the floor plan means and if it can be used as a tool toward further improvement however, lies with the owner, not the architect. I've written this here before and I'll write it again not only for you but the lurkers out there... A good architect, when given the chance, will provide a design that can give a client everything they want, but often in ways completely unexpected. But for that to happen it takes a critical element necessary on the part of the client in every successful project and that element is trust. Often during our initial meeting, the client will reveal their ability or inability to trust others. If I feel the element of trust is not there they will likely be referred to a permit drafter. A creative person should explore other approaches with you in the spirit of "That's great but have you thought of this.......". But for that to be carried forward successfully it takes a trusting client to not only allow the architect to expand on alternative ideas but to objectively look at other approaches in a collaborative effort with the architect. And that's an intangible that all successful projects are born out of. I can't tell you how many times a client sitting across the table from me has said "Wow! We never thought of that. We like your kitchen idea but how 'bout if we move the entry here and the...." As I hand them the pen. In some of those design sessions the client commands the pen almost as much as I do! A floor plan you bring to the architect is all well and good but just be ready to expect any preconceived ideas to be questioned. They may in fact turn out to be perfectly valid but at least they've been evaluated against alternates as any good architect should do. So, as the client and the author of your plan, it's ok to bring it to a creative person but be prepared to adopt a trusting posture in listening positively to what that creative person is saying. If you can't do that, then save yourself a lot of frustration and just go to a permit drafter with "Here, draw this up!" Finally, regarding preconceived ideas, I've quoted on this board before these two quotes by two creative people..... Henry Ford observed "If I had asked people what they wanted they would have told me "A faster horse". And Steve Jobs mused “A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them. Everyone wanted an iPhone when they first appeared, but no one could have described what they wanted before seeing one". So put trust in your architect to carry you through the process in the spirit of Mr. Ford and Mr. Jobs and you'll have a home that is the very best. And speaking of the best, here's wishing you the best of luck with your project. Exciting times!

It IS a man thing! My DH does that with ours also --

I appreciate that they want to do fun things together, and that Dad wants to spend the time with Son, but Son has homework! (Which should be doable in 20 minutes, but never is.) Plus close to an hour per day of extra reading work. And now Dad is on this "DS is getting to bed too late --Why don't we have dinner each night by 7:00?" -- OK. But that means DS has to get his homework done by 7:00 as well (he's useless after dinner), which means he has to start around 5:00 at the latest, which means he has to be HOME, de-hypered, snacked and watered by then.

Next time, I'm just going to tell Hubby "Oops! I forgot, I have an outside appointment tonight. You need to help DS with his science, social studies, and math homework, do his reading tutoring, and try to cook dinner and have it on the table by 7:00 so he won't get to bed too late. Love you - See you - Bye!" ;-) Then RUN out the door...

Too funny! Your suggestion is great. The only way they will realize how much work it is to get a kid in bed by their bedtime is if they have to do it once in a while.

i find this even about little things - my BF just seems allergic to planning! tonight he has an extra 'date' planned with his oldest son - so i was asking him this morning - what are you guys going to do? - 'maybe go bike riding' - oh have you found the bike rack? (as we just moved and don't know where everything is yet) - "nope" - oh... 'maybe we'll go see a movie' - oh have you checked what's playing? - "nope" - oh...etc...
it's not a big deal, and i'm sure they'll have fun whatever they do - but it would drive me nuts not to have an actual plan.

Oh, yes! I know exactly what you're talking about. I can't even plan anything for the of us because HE never schedules anything with BM.

Here's the prime example.....BM cheated....they're getting a divorce.....BM says she doesn't want to "fight" in court.......he agrees to not getting an attorney........she gets one under the pretence that "an attorney needs to draw up the papers....he never suspects what she's doing (although she WAS CHEATING, taking HIS kid to meet another man at the park, having HIS daughter lie to him at the tender age of, and now divorcing him).......he doesn't read the papers; just signs......so 7 years later BM is moving his daughter to another state....we get out divorce papers to see if there is a clause binding her to a certain geographical region.....guess what?....NOPE....by not reading the papers, he gave her SOLE MANAGING CONSERVATORSHIP....now, he has absolutely no say-so or decision-making ability over his daughter....talk about Dumba$$ery to the utmost extent!

This is why I object so strongly to homework - it intrudes upon family time. In twenty years, which is the child going to remember fondly - playing chess with dad in the evening, or finishing all 47 math problems? The school has my child for 6.5 hours a day - that ought to be plenty of time to cover the curriculum. People who homeschool find that they can cover it in half the time or less.

I do not hesitate to write on my child's homework paper - "I told her to do only the odd numbered problems because this assignment was taking her too long." I have done this even with children without any learning disabilities. I have never had a teacher complain.

I actually agree with you, TOS. I think homework is largely unnecessary. Except for special projects, maybe. But daily homework is designed mostly to get the PARENTS involved. There are plenty of other ways to do that. The old school district we were in had an actual policy (written and everything) that they would not give any homework that lasted longer than 30 minutes.

But that's off subject *blushes*......sorry bout that, Ceph.....*runs and hides*

I just needed to vent... So change the subject all you want

And I agree that more than 30 minutes of homework is WAY too much (I think 15-20 minutes a night is perfectly reasonable though).

That said, sometimes A__ has more than 30 minutes because he didn't do his work at school - he was goofing off instead or just didn't want to do it at school - not because that's what the teacher assigned as "homework"
In those cases, I'm a hard@55 and feel that he brought it on himself, so he's darn well going to do it all.

By 6th or 7th grade, my kids' teachers were allowed to give up to 2.5 hours a night. I think that is ridiculous.

I agree. After an hour, if that, SD has checked out of home work. You could argue that making them continue on until they finish is teaching them a life skill to focus on something they don't like, or you could argue that is is wasting time they could be spending with family, outside in the fresh air, etc. as they are obviously not getting anything from it.

DS, in the 2nd grade, has to read 20 minutes 4 nights a week and answer one question in his journal about what he read. That is perfect if you ask me - either he reads and then talks to DH or I about it or he reads aloud. Too bad this doesn't work in middle and high school.
