teenage suicide.

My DS16 came home from school today and told me that the best friend of a kid he knows at school committed suicide. I guess the boy that killed himself had a father that is a fireman and the dad responded to the emergency call.

My daughter attempted suicide when she was a young teen. I thank God she changed her mind before it was too late.

I just wanted to post this to stress how important it is to keep an eye on your teens. Keep talking to them. Know their friends. Respect their privacy but not to the extent that you don't know whats going on in their lives.

They say that teen suicide comes in groups. When one does it then others that have been thinking about it feel they have the green light. Some times they have a pact where one will start it and then others agree to follow.

I think when we have troubles between families....step, bio and so forth our kids are at greater risk. Just had to say something.

Oh, that has got to be the most heartbreaking thing ever. After DS's bes friend killed himself we got involved with yellowribbon.org, they have lots of great teen suicide prevention prgrams one called the yellow card. The teens are all give these yellow business cards at the start of the program. The card signifies to anyone they hand it too "I need help, I need to talk to you now." so they never feel there isn't someone to talk too.

Its a great program and they have lots of other ideas too, Unfortunately DS's high school kind of poo pooed getting them involved and 3 more students in our district committed suicide that same year. Absolutely horrid.

Look it up & don't be she about presenting to the school board either. If I can help in any way please let me know. I would be happy to.

I had a few friends growing up that committed suicide. My daughters father committed suicide. He was 23 at the time. No one ever talks about it (suicide) It is always swept under the rug and kept hush hush. This DEFINATELY something we should be discussing with our children just like sex drugs and alcohol. Always Always keep that communication open and keep a watchful eye for warning signs of trouble and dont be afraid to talk about it. You can go to rehab for drugs ... you cant come back from the dead.

Hi Asleep. How have you been? The computer is great for research and meeting nice people..Especially on GW. It's also a great way to shop for items not sold locally. But, it has a ton of drawbacks. Mailmen/women are losing jobs since snail mail is fairly obsolete. Most of our mail is junk mail. People seldom send Christmas cards anymore. Stores depend on computerized regesters. My God! What would happen if a major disaster happened? If all computers went down? Very few people know how to add/subtract/multiply/divide these days. I don't know your age, and I don't expect you to say, lol, but I remember when mom and pop stores sold groceries. Smaller stores added items on paper grocery bags. Of course, some stores used cash regesters, but they had nothing to do with computers. How would ppl shop? I guess the computer was always somewhat dangerous, especially purchasing. But, it's gotten much worse over the years. The other day I received an email from Amazon. It said, I needed to complete an order. An order that consisted of 3 items totalling near 4,000.00. Sony products..Products I didn't glance at, let alone place. There's people on the net, 'especially elderly,' who don't know better. Elderly people are targets. I feel sorry for them. Like you, if my computer kicked the bucket, I'd panic. On the other hand I'd get a lot more work accomplished. :) The net is now a necessity, like a phone or tv. But, are they really necessary? I wonder. So, is surfing the net going to cause disaster? What's the chance of being stalked or people finding our personal information? How many viruses will we get visiting a website? How many hackers are out there? Most important, why are they not caught? Asleep, I don't have the answers, but after hearing the news last night made me rethink...people are evil. Why would anyone want to ruin others' hobbies? How can people take advantage of anyone, especially the elderly? Yes, people are evil. So sad.

I used to live in military housing. You have people from all over the world, from all types of backgrounds living together. For the most part, everyone has the same employer, unless there is a spouse who works in the "civilian" world. Neighbors come and go at any given time. Our building was two stories with four apartments. Hallways were bare, with just vinyl tile. The front door closed automatically and SLAMMED shut. Some tenants were nice enough to hold the door at night to keep it from slamming. Some would walk softly through the halls. EVERYTHING would echo loudly. When I washed my kitchen floor, I would also wash the hallway and stairs. Sometimes we'd have a neighbor who would also do this. For awhile, I was the only one who was cleaning the hallway floors. Ethnic foods can be hard on neighbors. One lady below me was pregnant and would stuff all her bath towels under the door and in her windows to keep the cooking smells out from the apartment across the hall from her. The entire building would smell when she cooked. We had upstairs neighbors who felt the need to make the grass below look better. They installed sprinklers that would hit the windows in apartments below. One winter we had neighbors who wouldn't help with their share of plowing the communal driveway. They decided to block access to said driveway one day. They didn't see their car for about a month after everyone else got together and plowed it in. For the most part, we had good neighbors, and I do miss it sometimes, but not that much.

My darling husband passed away 15 days ago. We knew each other for 8 years. He was very vibrant and full of life, had a good job house and car. Internally though he was suffering from chronic depression and was addicted to alcohol for many years even before i knew him. It got worse when he lost his mother 3 years ago. He would constantly talk about killing himself, praying that God would take his life. It was like seeing him die everyday. I prayed that he comes out of his depression, went to the psychiatrist to get meds for him, put him in rehab, gave him unconditional love but nothing seemed to work. He stopped eating and would just drink and watch the tv the whole day and night. Any attempt at communication was met with silence. He did not want to talk about anything. He gradually became so weak that he was bed ridden. I would coax him to eat or at least have some soup or juice but it was an uphill task. 3 years and 10 hospitalizations later he is no more. His body and organs were so weak that it could not process any medicines. I just wish that he would be alive today maybe he would have made an effort at living. People tell me that he is free from his worries and depression. I hope he is finally at peace. People say that your love was one sided but i know that he loved me and needed me. He would feel more depressed when i was not around him. I would call him my sunflower. In the end i feel he could not help himself. I miss my darling a lot.

What would have been to horrific, my DS knocked on the door to see if Frank wanted to go for a ride, he was 16. Frank didn't come to the door, so he left, and when he came home, there were the police cars, and the yellow tape around the front porch. I remember how devestated my DS was and crawled in bed with me that night, and slept with him in my arms. Something we will never ever forget. Frank's father, shortly after the funeral, went to the school, and had a talk with the males in the class, to discuss Frank's death and the hazard of the practice.

Cat....What an amazing idea! I will check into it.

I'm so sorry for you DS. What a horrible thing to have to go through. It is bothering my son so much and he didn't even know the young man that died. I am so sorry.

mom of 4... I am so sorry about what you have had to go through and about your DD loosing her father in such a way. It is such a scary thing. People shouldn't sweep it under the rug even though it is so painful to talk about. How terribly sad.

When I was 15 my brother and I found a woman that had committed suicide. Her little boy, 10, was friends with my little brother. He came to our house and was crying, saying that he couldn't wake up his mom. I knew that she had just gotten out of the hospital for emotional issues. My older brother went to the house and found her dead. She had shot herself in the chest.

My X's best friend killed himself...my daughter's 1st boyfriend killed himself. Another friend of hers did also.

It is so heartbreaking. After my daughter attempted it I couldn't sleep for a long time. I would start to hyperventilate every night being afraid of what I might find in the morning. We did counseling and it was such help. It ended up being more for me than her. She has no thoughts of it now. The people she knew that did it were after her attempt so she was able to see how much pain it caused everyone and she was so sorry.

I feel like I need to clarify..

I understand why it is swept under the rug. It is difficult to explain. It is diffucult to comprehend and there there is a stigma attached to it.

But, above and beyond anything else... I think it should be a learning experiance (I try to see the good in a situation)... We should take it as a warning that we never know what is in a persons heart and we should ALWAYS take a moment to step outside of ourselves to observe what is going on with those closest to us. There were slight warnign signs but nothing I really paid attention too because it was so far from my frame of thinking.. but looking back it was all there plain as day.

It only takes a moment to make someone feel like they are special... it takes a lifetime to forgive yourself for what you might have done.

I understand mom of 4. I did not mean to be judgemental. It does have a stigma attached to it.

You last line "It only takes a moment to make someone feel like they are special...it takes a lifetime to forgive yourself for what you might have done". Such an insightful statement and one that can be applied to so many areas of life. Thank you for sharing that.
