Options for floor outlet in slab

We just realized that we're going to need to spec some floor outlets on our drawings for our new house. We'll need to bring electricity to the island and I'd like floor outlets in the living room where the furniture will be floating. We're building on a slab.

My husband is rightly concerned that putting them in the living room is risky business since we don't really know what furniture we'll have in there and we'll probably want to move it around at some point, making pinpointing exact locations for floor outlets difficult.

This being the case, I'd like the outlets to be attractive, or easy to hide (flush with the hardwood flooring) in case they end up being in a place we don't want/need them.

What types of products are available for floor outlets that would fit this purpose?

my parents have floor outlets with brass cover plates. they have doors on them that flip down to completely cover the actual outlets, and when closes you do not even see them because they blend so well with the tile floor.

if you even THINK you want floor outlets, tell them to run the conduit and boxes before the slab is poured. it will be 10x the cost to come back later and cut the slab to run them.

Will the floor be directly on slab? Or will there be sleepers of 2x4s? If sleepers, there's room enough. If on slab, you'll have to embed conduit in the slab, and some boxes.

Keep in mind that regardless of what kind of floor you have, you're not going to be able to move the floor outlets too easily . . .

When we remodeled our kitchen, we sawed up a small trench in the concrete to run power to our island. I don't see why it would be a big deal but I'm not an expert.

Min/max height above slab/grade for T&P outlet?

Under the IRC the discharge end must be 6" above the slab or finished grade. Under the UPC it may be 6" to 24" above the slab or finished grade. The discharge end must point downwards and must be located where it is clearly visible. (may not be concealed by landscaping plants or materials). When using iron pipe there must not be any threads on the discharge end of the pipe. In regions subject to freezing the T&P must terminate through an air gap into an approved indirect waste receptor within the heated portion of the structure. (In this instance the air gap is created by terminating the discharge pipe a minimum of 2" above the flood level rim of the receptor.)

I'm not sure about their slabs, but I fell in love with limestone floor tiles and was just about to order from a WZ showroom, and while reading GW, heard about the outlet. I called, talked to Edith (who is very helpful) and found the same tile for 1/2 the price! So, it might be worth the wait until Monday, but I would put a hold on the slabs you found. I saved about 5k, thanks GW!

If you are willing to have simple on/off switches and change the fan speed with the pull chain, is there a reason this type of switch would not work to switch both fan and light from a single gang box? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-Decora-15-Amp-Single-Pole-Dual-Switch-White-R62-05634-0WS/100356887 There is even one that will work for three switches. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-Decora-15-Amp-3-Rocker-Combination-Switch-White-R62-01755-0WS/100356847 I am also not aware of any code that prohibits a light switch inside a closet for a closet light. In fact, I think it is quite common. The one code item you do need to look at is that you cannot have a closet light fixture with an exposed bulb, since it may get too hot if it was up against clothing on a high shelf. However, there are several light fixtures you can get that have integrated LEDs, and they generate nearly zero heat. Bruce

What if we have a raised floor? We want to hide the outlets in the floor where the furniture will be, but in case we move the furniture, don't want to see the outlets. We will have hardwood floors. My GC doesn't kbnow of an outlet that is recessed or has a door on it that "davidandkasie" spoke of. Can you help me find such a thing? Thanks.

Sorry, you can't have it both ways. There is no such thing as a "hidden" floor receptacle, nor can you move them. Not even 1mm.

ALL floor receptacles have covers or caps for the outlets.

Here's an example. They typically sit flush to the floor, or are raised 1/8" or less.

How big is the room? I would do some possible furniture layouts and then do your best to figure out some logical locations. If you don't use them, covering with a rug will hide them.
