Useful, beautiful or just there? Please discuss!

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

- William Morris

I like to think that I respect this, but I'm sure visitors to my home might disgree on the beautiful bit (my taste is weird) and probably on the useful bit too!

I have any number of decorative trunks, boxes, baskets that hold and conceal useful things (I live in a small 1938 house with tiny 1938 closet space.

I hate clutter.

I have way too many "useful" books -- believe me they are culled every 6 months to fit into the available space -- but I still have too many!

I try retain dual finction items and to draw the line on purely decorative things (not always sucessfully) because of lack of space. But important "family" things keep arriving.

So, what do you all think of the quote above? Seriously, I'd love to know!
