So a nice space!!!! I wonder how it would look to have some sort of painted cabinets?? I found a picture of a log cabin kitchen with red cabinets and it looked so pretty!!! There is a lot of wood there, so maybe something with some color would make them stand out more.

Here's an interesting concept for your log home kitchen. It's rather nice. It definately breaks up the wood and adds some colour and interest.

Lovely kitchen, but that is a lot of wood color. If you don't want to use painted cabinets in the entire kitchen, why don't you consider just painting the upper cabinets. That would bring color and you'd still have your bottom cabinets in natural wood tone.

As for the counter, I'm thinking a brown would not enhance the cabinets. I'm not a granite expert, but I'd look for something with a light background that would brighten up the space.

I would never even consider Baltic Brown for your space.

Bella on's inspiration pic is stunning. It might be too much if you are keeping your black appliances but try to have at least some painted cabs in there. Then go either very dark or very light with the granite, not brown.

Thank you so much for your responses. I am trying to do this from Florida, and the cabin is in NC. We are trying to make a WOW kitchen so we want to pick the right granite. I too, think a dark colored granite might make more of a statement. But, I worry about the upkeep of the darker stone. The alder wood that we think we are going to use has a redish tint to it.

OK, I have some other granite colors that have been suggested by the granite girl. Uba Verde Butterfly, Uba Tuba, and Juparana Classico. There are some accesories in the room that have green in them. Any thoughts on those granites? We will also do some type of tile backsplash.

Oh I love the painted cabs with the log cabin interior, especially the black. I think the wood of the walls and the paint color of the cabinets make each other "WOW". but that is just me :)

My suggestion would be to paint the cabinets black like the picture someone posted,and distress them. Then I would use a lighter granite like Santa Cecelia or Venetian Gold. If new appliances are in the plan, definitely stainless steel. Good luck!

I agree! Baltic Brown is way too dark for your kitchen. And I think painted cabinets would be a wonderful compliment to all that wood.

It would be helpful to know what the wood that you've picked out looks like and whether or not you will be doing any of the black that people have mentioned. Also, what about the appliances?

Obviously, if you have black cabs and appliances, you wouldn't do a dark granite as you might with lighter finishes.

No offense, but I wouldn't take recommendations from your "granite gal" :). Sorry, that sounded mean but I just want you to have the "wow" kitchen that you're speaking of and if her first suggestion was Baltic Brown, her other opinions might be suspect, as well.

Unless you really want/need new cabinets I would do a mini face lift on that kitchen.

Find a great faux finisher to paint those cabinets - add chicken wire or glass to the uppers. If you paint them you could even have a carpenter take the cabs up the the ceiling line for more storage. Switch the pantry cab & refrigerator so you don't have the stove so close to the frige. If you wanted a bigger range you would have room by switching the fridge. Add a custom island painted a different color or even wood toned since it would be away from the walls.

Oh, it would be so much fun!!

I very much agree with the others. I LOVE alder cabinets (Lindy's make me drool!) but I don't think you will do the cabinetry or your beautiful home justice by putting them in your space. It will just be more wood and in a different tone, but still basically brown. I would consider a beautiful dark (black, red, green or blue ) painted finish with a very light granite or marble. OR, a light cabinet finish (maybe a glazed linen?) with a very dark granite. Those lovely walls need some color, contrast, and light to make them the stars they are

We also considered alder cabinets and uba tuba granite.

I would put in as much glass front cabinets as you can (you can frost the glass if you don't want to show off what's inside); cottage/farmhouse style sink; and, unless you have enormous skylights, stay away from the black distressed cabinets such as in bella's pic (even though it's gorgeous, it looks like your space is already dark enough). I like painted wood in that kind of kitchen -- barn red, sky blue, or off-white, just not black -- but rustic alder would also fit well, I think.

There are a couple of granites discussed on the kitchens forum -- gold & silver and yellow river -- that might work if you want a lighter granite. They have a lot of movement, and I have no idea whether they are expensive. You can also find the white granites thread on the kitchens forum. I'm afraid that the dark granites you're mentioning would just be too dark for that space.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas! My DH is not in on the painted cabinets.So, back to the Alder wood. The kitchen actually has a lot of light with a couple of skylights. I still am loving the look of the redish tint wood with a dark granite. Uxorial, I always have LOVED your kitchen and never knew it was a log cabin! To give the granite girl some credit, she chose the Baltic Brown on just a sample of the wood and not even seeing the photos of the kitchen. I am going out this weekend and looking at various samples. Will check out Verde Butterfly, Yellow River, Peacock Green, and Juparana Classico. Someone even suggested Red Dragon. Not sure what that would look like with the wood. I still have plenty of time.
