That's an ambitious project for a beginning woodworker (or even a somewhat experienced woodworker), and impossible to do without more tools. Mitre saws are really great tools, but their primary purpose is to cut things to length. You have many panels and shelves in your design that can only be cut accurately and cleanly with a table saw or radial arm saw. (You could also use a circular saw for this, but you wouldn't like the result.) It would also be important to have a lot of bar clamps, a biscuit joiner, a router, a power sander, and a power drill...and the knowledge of how to use these items. You would also need to know where to use various kinds of joints and where (and where not) to apply glue to provide adequate strength and prevent cracking from seasonal wood movement.

Believe it or not, I'm not trying to discourage you; I simply want to suggest that this is probably beyond the ability of a non-experienced woodworker as a first project. If you want to be able to do stuff like this, you need to try a few less ambitious projects first. I've been doing woodworking for 45 years and am still learning. It is something you can do, but not without some practice that only hands-on experience can teach.

You should do some reading: subscribe to a few magazines (Fine Woodworking; Better Homes and Garden Wood magazine, etc.), look at some books (like those published by Taunton Press), and take a woodworking course or two in your community.

I know this is probably not the answer you wanted, but I guarantee that if you try to do this project with just a mitre saw and your minimal level of knowledge, you'll be kicking yourself for wasting a lot of money on the wood you've butchered. Even crown molding can be tricky, despite how simple it looked to you when an experienced carpenter cut it.

Kudzu is right. Why don't you start with making a simple wood project like a small bookcase, take a class or two and get a feel for what other tools you need. You might want to make shelves for your garage first, and see what you think.

My husband finished remodeling our house; has lots of tools and we are going to have a cabinetmaker do our bookcases. The explanation is that there is rough carpentry--making a potting bench for instance, or a birdhouse,or framing a house . Then there is finish carpentry which produces a final product; doing trim & details. The other group is cabinetry which is more like making furniture. People who can do that--make kitchen cabinets. Even there--I have had kitchen cabinets that were poorly done, and some that gleamed like fine furniture. Skill and experience really show. By the way, that level of difficulty is why so many builders use readymade cabinets. Even in high end houses.
Its the difference between sewing a tablecloth and making a ball gown.

Please follow Kudzu's and marge727's advice.

Your plans are well done but you will need a lot more tools than a miter saw. For cabinetry, you need an accurate table saw with extensions and that's just the start. Bisket joiner, cabinetry clamps, dado blades, a router are just the beginning.

For your needs,start very small - a portable bookcase. Learn how to cut wood panels and learn how to join them. Learn how to keeo them square!!!!

Search the web for pre-manufactored cabinets to fill you needs for right now. A temporary solution is never out of the question.

I've been woodworking as a homeowner for 30 some years now. It's taken me this long to accumulate the tools needed to do cabintry and fine molding and trim work. And I still take my time and fret over every cut and every angle. It's taken me this long to learn the key techniques and I'm still learning with every new project.

But on the positive side, learning all this and acquiring the tools needed is a great way to have a life-long hobby you can showcase to family and friends. I can honestly say I really enjoy every new project I start. It might take me longer than planned, but it's a great feeling of accomplishment when I'm done.

I was thinking about buying unfinished pre-manufactured cabinets from Lowes which are the 36" Unfinished Base Cabinets but the depth is 23 3/4 and I need less than that in depth. I figure if I can find these in a lesser depth my husband and I could stain and put moulding on ourselves. What do you think?

My husband and I have been doing a lot of reading and watching videos and I think this project is way to much for us as beginners.

What do you suggest? I really want something that will look nice but not pay the outrageous price Lowe's wants to charge.

Do you have an ikea near you? They have beautiful cabinets that you can install in all sorts of configurations - I'm sure you could get something pretty close to your picture. And they're very reasonable and high quality to boot. We installed 3 of them in our laundry room a couple years ago - we abuse them daily and have stuffed them full - they hold costco sized detergent bottles and a huge bucket full of drills, screwdrivers and other tools - so far not even one saggy shelf, which is much better than I can say for the Home Depot cheapies we had in the laundry at our last house. The ones we have are 39" high and maybe 15" deep. You will have to work with their premade sizes but you would be amazed at what I have seen people do. Pop over to the kitchens forum and do a search for Ikea cabinets...there's also a great website where people post pictures of their finished ikea projects, including some that have turned their cabinets into window seats, entertainment centers, etc. I'll link to it below.

Look at cabinets meant for the bathroom. They are generally shallower than those meant for the kitchen. Most of the same lines that offer kitchen cabinets also offer ones for the bathroom.

You might also get quotes from local cabinet makers. Many people on the Kitchens forum have found local woodworkers who make custom cabinets for no more than they would have spent for stock sizes. YMMV, of course.

Finally, you might check out the RTA cabinets from Scherrs, which comes highly recommended by lots of people on the Kitchens forum. If I remember correctly, they allow you to make cabinets deeper or shallower without much of an additional charge.
