I just arrived last night for a week-long visit at my Dad's, and I almost just have to laugh at the latest twist (and 'twist' really is the word) on The Photo Issue.

As many of you know, there's this issue with my SM taking down photos of me and these photos ending up "in That Somewhere Place" (which is usually the attic, or the basement, she doesn't have the balls ----YET---- to throw them in the trash). As of yet, I've not said anything about it (lest *I* be accused of being petty or starting trouble), but I'm pretty sure she still knows it bothers me. I think she perceives me as taking her up on her petty 'tit for tat' game when I give my Dad any new photo of me, or when I (as on one recent visit) take HIM up on HIS asking to get some frames for these (and other) photos to be able to display them properly.

So, seeing as she knows that I am bothered by her insistence on removing these photos, even though I don't say anything about it, I find her latest 'twist' on passive-aggressive surface cooperation pathetically humorous: instead of opening herself up anymore to the possibility that I will someday say something about being upset by the removal of any of my photos, and in order to pre-empt any LITERAL grounds for me to be upset, she's now changed tactics a bit. Here's the latest version: instead of REMOVING the photos of me from the room altogether, she now simply COVERS them over with pictures of herself and/or herself and my Dad together via tucking them into the same frame. Not only does this look ridiculous (because you can still see my forehead sticking out the top of the frame from behind her photo), it takes both pettiness and symbolism to crazy new levels. But she's onto something, it's true: I can't complain that she's REMOVED the photos of me!

Good grief!

You could take your graciousness to the next level by buying a frame for her pictures and quietly framing them for her - "Surprise!"

That's a perfect idea. On a practical level it would solve the obvious frame shortage they've got, hopefully send a subtle message that "there's room for everyone"/"everyone can be honored with their own special frame", and ---at least as far as I'm aware--- there's no possible offense that could be taken from it. Thanks for the tip!

Norm - hope you pick up on this .. hopefully it's helpful for your project. I would have included this for you earlier, but I had this info stashed and it took some hunting for me to re-find it. For any soil that goes into landscaping there are three classes to know: bank soil, loose soil, and compacted soil. "Bank soil" is soil in it's naturally settled state, without machine or human compaction. An open lot, untouched, would have a bulk density of bank soil. Dig that soil up and the bulk density decreases as it becomes broken and aerated. That is loose soil. Take soil and compact it, like running machinery over it, it becomes compacted soil. The typical relationships for bulk density are bank soil is the reference = 1.0, loose soil expands and has 80% of the bulk density of bank soil, and compacted soil has a density about 1.05-1.1 of bank soil. Why is this important? A big part of permanent landscaping is establishing a stable and permanent grade. You want stability after installation. When you buy soil for a landscape you get loose soil. But when you are filling and grading to native settled soil you have to match surrounding bank soil for grade and drainage. That means for a soil comparable to the untouched surrounding soil you will actually need to overfill and gade with loose soil to allow for the settling. Typically by about 10-20% for topsoil. The soil supplier should be able to guide you on how much. The danger is that if you don't allow for that natural settling, you will end up with a low area where you had filled as it later settles, and if that area is planted for permanence there is little you can do without upsetting the plants. A part of the consideration is the filling soil's organic content. The more of that there is, the more the soil will settle over time - it cannot be directly replaced in permanent landscapes. You can only strive to maintain it via top dressing / mulch in those permanent grade and planted areas. About as good as you can maintain that way is ~ 5% organic matter. That is so wonderful you got the wonderful weather! I was afraid that because you are close to the ocean? Seattle? (Pacific Northwest) I was thinking you would get all the heavy rains from the global warming situation (polar ice cap meltdown)! Boxo, we got plastered with huge thunderstorms and a Flash flood warning so I was at my parents' house until 1:45 a.m. waiting for the rains to slow down enough so that I could drive back home, but it was still pretty darn scary. A lot of closed off sections with the police cars, and you know things are pretty bad when you see Police Assistant vehicles with boats attached to the back! Yikes! that is how wet and terrible our Kansas City weather is like! And my Dad didn't want the computer or TV running with all this rain and Eluane ran and hid in every spot she could with all that crashing thunder, lol! My poor Dad was bailing out buckets of water from the flooded basement from the mobile pumper (not sure what it's called)I am far luckier in that I have a sump pump at my home, or else my basement would be a mess! Boxo there were no Abraham D'Arby's at my local nursery, but at least they had your Gertrude Jekyll and Pretty Jessica, which have very nice fragrances- the best out of the Austins I feel. And what better way than to share the joy with the Grandpas and Grandmas and the fragrances with those who can reach out and hold those gorgeous beautiful and precious flowers! :D :D :D! I did see this! And yes, I still LOVE it five years later. We still haven't begun the 2nd-floor bathroom, aka the 1925 Hall Bath/Faux Master which is our only bathroom on the bedroom level with a clawfoot tub & a shower ring. So the Starting From Dirt Basement Bathroom is still my favorite place to shower. So here's how to do the Starting From Dirt Basement Bath set up: Hansgrohe Ibox rough in Shower & tub fixtures - Hansgrohe Rain S Showerhead & hand shower S Thermostatic Trim with Volume Control and Diverter (tub to shower) Kohler HydroRail Shower Column and Diverter (showerhead to hand shower) Metris S tub filler The Tub Filler & Hydrorail are tied together at the Ibox by the diverter on the shower trim, the two showerheads switch between each other on the Hydorail. @may_flowers -- Wow you do have a great memory about my house plans - obviously you have helped me before. Yes, we are debating either a powder coated blue for the island hood or warm white colour (both to have stainless trim on base of fan) . Our kitchen has the dining room on the south side, the living room on the north and the great room diagonally south/east from the kitchen. All of these rooms are open to each other. Ignore the wall near the fridge as there is a good size archway there that Scherr's did not put in the elevation plan. I do agree that once the stools go in as you stated, the trim work on the island will be less noticeable. I also agree with you that the eye will go to the glass cabinet and the hood before any island trim work. The laundry room with blue cabs is on the east of the house and kitchen is on west -- but you are right I have posted about my laundry room/ craft room too. @romy -- your thoughts make sense to me too. We did want stools with backs and the island is dark so trim will get noticed less anyway. I love the suggestion for counter edge that you pointed. If it was good enough for Beekeeperswife then it is certainly good enough for me. I love her kitchen! Blfenton, I like that term "table top edge". I will find out the technical name for it to be clear to the fabricator. I am really happy you came up with this idea, Blfenton, of changing the edge of the island. Such a perfect solution. I will to study Bee's kitchen some more. She made so many great decisions (love the way she did her back splash with the tiles on an angle). Off topic I realize, but since you have all helped me out so much on the form/style of my kitchen I have posted my sample board so you can envision the finish combination. Any thoughts on whether we should do a warm white island fan or grey/blue let us know. Or another entirely different colour (tons of colour options available for powder coating)? Oh my goodness Serenity!

I like Sweeby's idea. Buy ones with words on them, like love, friendship, etc... then do it when she's not looking. I wish I could be a fly on the wall!

I would make sure to buy frames that say "daddy's girl" on them for your pics to go into! Oh wait...she might weasel her way into them! Maybe you should just stick with frames that say "daughter" on them! Perhaps you could superglue to frames closed so she can not open them to rearrange pics! HAHA!

YUCK! I hate passive agression...how can you defend yourself when the person isn't technically "attacking" you. BLEECH!

I think you should do what IMA said. Get A "WORLD'S GREATEST STEPMOM" frame except heres my twist...get your hands on a pic of her and photoshop her head on a donkeys body and then give it to her as a CHRISTMAS GIFT....LOL!!!!

You guys are funny... great ideas, especially the captions: "Laugh", etc. (I think "Laugh" is my fave...)

I appreciate the words of support... there are times when things get so wacko that you'd think you were losing your mind, so admitedly at those times every xtra bit of validation helps a lot.
