Countertop Microwave in Pantry - Dedicated Circuit?
Comments (4)Using a lighting circuit for a receptacle in the pantry would be a code violation as pantry receptacles are required to be on a 20 AMP small appliance circuit like those in a dining room and kitchen. If the microwave is 1200 watt or more it should probably be on it's own circuit. There's seldom an issue if you're just nukeing coffee or a sweet roll, but when you get into cooking taters and similar where the unit is on for more than a minute or two it does make a difference. Specifically, the code says a single cord and plug device can't exceed 80% of the circuit rating. In the case of a 15 AMP circuit this is 12 AMPs, a bit less than a 1500 watt micro is rated at. In this case a 20 AMP would be required . If you're remodeling and doing electrical work anyway a dedicated circuit for the micro is a good idea anyway. People often use an existing micro when adding one in a pantry, often electing to put a new one over the range as part of a remodel. In this type of case, what the pantry micro would be replaced with when it fails should be the consideration....See MoreCounter-height windows - Where's your outlet?
Comments (8)I put in two pop-up "Mocketts". They're pop-up outlets like the one I linked below. Mocketts Up... Mocketts Down... Our window opening is about 7' wide. Two outlets were required to meet Code. So when the electrical inspector was here for the preliminary inspection our electrician and I talked to him about our options. This is what we all agreed would work...both functionally to meet Code as well aesthetically. I've used them 2 or 3 times in the past 11 months or so...more b/c we paid so much for them that I felt they needed to be used! Comments (15)Now I'm bummed. This is another area of my remodel I did not address with the KD and electrician. This is a little off topic but because of GW and the ABB club, I wouldn't pick out a backsplash material until the countertops were installed. My KD (who I really like and has done a great job) was shocked. She had never had a client not choose & order their backsplash once the tops were chosen. She warned me it could delay our project. Some tile orders take 6 weeks or more and even if the was tile was immediately available, their installer would most likely be booked. I just picked a backsplash yesterday and i love it. But look at all the switches & outlets that are going to disrupt it....See MoreUnder-counter outlet mystery...? Help!
Comments (4)I rewired the outlet under the sink as a half hot with the hot side in series with a GFI next to the disposal switch. The GFI is on its own circuit so it should be fine; we don't use that outlet for anything else....See Moreweedmeister
