Back of my wooden bookcases too thin and cheap looking

Greetings! I purchased three pine bookcases with crown molding (long search) and I love them except for the very thin, cheap looking backs--I want my fix-it guy to replace the back with something that gives a more polished, sturdy look before I paint then. Originally my paint store recommended a wood filler to fill in the graininess of the thin backing which would require me to sand like crazy--this seems like a poor solution--am I on the right track in just pulling the backs off and putting someting more solid on them--I will be painting the bookcases to give a custom, builtin look.

Grateful thanks for your ideas. If I am on the right track, what thickness would be recommended?

It is hard to say without some photos and some knowledge of how the back is currently attached. What does your fix-it guy say? Also, with books in place, you may not see much of the back anyway. In one of my bookcase projects I used a 3/8" beaded knotty pine plywood for the back and it looked great, so thin is not necessarily bad.

It does depend on how its attached now. If it's just nailed or stapled in, go for it. If it's slid into a groove anywhere, it may be tough to do and you can't go much thicker anyway. But even if you stay thin, you can get really nice plywood - check a specialty lumber supplier if you can. In Canada, Windsor Plywood has great stuff (they have a couple of American stores).

You don't always have to sand like crazy when you use filler if you are going to paint afterwards, provided you apply the filler smoothly enough in the first place, usually using a nice wide scraper (may look a bit rustic in the end, but might be better than what you have now). In any event, if you want to do that, it will be easier to work on if you remove the back. You might also consider wallpapering the back (again, if possible, remove the back first to make the job much easier).

nancybee_2010: As in most of my decorating projects, I had it 98% complete, but your question gave me the nudge to finish the remaining 2%. I had tried out and returned several pots before settling on just the right one and transplated my other plant in it. I also decided to keep the old photos in my bedroom since I liked them there and bought a new frame that coordinated better with my candlesticks. That 2% remaining was to pick the photo to put in the frame--finally I decided to put last year's Christmas family photo there as I felt the sepia photos didn't look so good in the gold frame, though if others think sepia is better I can scan and tweak this photo for a sepia version. I should probably still tweak the bookcase some more, but it works for what I need it to do which is store books and photo albums. The photo albums don't fit on the lower shelves so I'm stumped how to change it without just storing the photo albums in a closet and then they are not out for people to see. As for the dining room, I did keep the red vase. I love how the light reflects in it. I may add some more vases at some point when the bulb actually dies, but so far it's hanging in there. cliff_and_joann: Thanks for the compliments and feedback. As you see above I did swap out the green vase. Your home is an inspiration to me--esp. your tablescapes. I've been following your DR chairs makeover with interest and can't wait to see the results! On another note, I recently got a new camera and am very excited that I am finally able to take pictures of window shots without the background getting washed out!

I am also not in the matchy-matchy camp, but IMO two matching pieces does not put you in that camp! I had a similar situation last fall where we were looking for a TV console/stand and I was determined to get something interesting and different, but I couldn't find the right size. I have nothing that "matches" in my entire first floor (even though, IMO, all my stuff works well together for the most part). But to make a long story short, we ended up ordering a TV console and a matching bookcase (for the other side of the room) from Stickley. I was almost upset about it, even though I loved both pieces! But they're in the room now and I don't feel like the room looks too matchy. I have mismatched end tables, a mismatched coffee table, none of the seating came from the same place... etc. BTW I happen to have the Ballard Durham end table and I love it! It's in the same room as my two "matchy" items!

Thanks for all the advice, suggestions. I am up for painting the wood. It's cheap pine -- was supposed to be the beautiful white pine on the kitchen cabinets but didn't happen- long story. I'm afraid the coral will look too pink. It's hard to choose a red that works well. Keep coming with ideas and I'll keep thinking. Thanks again.

Thanks to all of you who weighed in with opinions since I posed last. Wolfgang hit the nail on the head about what appeals about the Aubrey--the uniform thinness (not thickness since I do like the thin handle) across the lull and it seems honest. Great word! If I could find a thin pull in my price range that didn't fatten and taper, I'd go for it. Segbrown--I showed DH your kitchen (one of my all-time faves, btw) and it clicked for him. He sees why I like it now. For some reason, other pics didn't do it for him. I don't see you too often anymore, but your timing was great for me! Thank you! Old bat--(it feels weird to call you that as it could seem insulting, but you picked the name so I guess I'm ok. :) ) Thank you for mocking up, photographing, and posting the pics! Both pulls look great on your cabs. That would be a tough choice for me. Did you decide on the Bistro then? When DH gets back from his trip this week, I'll show him. Thanks again! UPDATE: DH liked the Highland Ridge so I ordered a sample. It'll be here at the same time he gets back. Now that he's more open to the Aubrey, I think he'll go with whatever I decide. At least we will have tried a couple he likes first before we make the final decision. And if we don't use the Highland for the kitchen, we could use it for the built-ins in the master. I'll let you know what we decide this weekend. Thanks for letting me vent and for helping me through this! Oh, and my marble goes in Friday! It was supposed to be tomorrow but they needed an extra day. I'm so curious how it'll look after seeing the marble in slab form for so many months.

Hopefully they meant past wood filler.
It is used to fill the grain of oak and other woods when a smooth surface is desired.

Behlen markets theirs as 'Por-o-pac.'
It is available in both solvent and water based.
The water base will of course cause some grain raising.

You thin the filer slightly (naphtha for the solvent base) and paint it on.
After it flashes off the naphtha it turns from glossy wet and you wipe off the excess across the grain.

Burlap works well, as do plastic putty knives.

If you are going to paint it should not need any sanding unless you do not remove enough.
