Window insulation

Hi. I'm getting replacement windows installed soon and the company said that for $5/window install cost they would install extra insulation (if I buy the insulation). They suggested I go to Home Depot and ask for 'window insulation to stuff window pockets'.

Before I go to home depot, I wanted to get an idea of what I'm looking for (is there something on their website I can see)?

Are you talking about around the perimeter of the window, or in weight pockets?... I have to say, this does not sound like a very professional company that you are dealing with.
I'm going to guess that you are referring to the weight pockets. They sell packages of loose-fill fiberglass that work well for that.

The windows themselves are insulated. This was just something extra that I had asked for (since we just had new attic insulation put in I have insulation on the brain...). I asked the window company if they do any insulating when putting in the replacement windows and they told me what I quoted above. But the windows (OKNA 400D) themselves are definitely insulated (Optional foam-filled insulated extrusions add energy efficiency - Deluxe version only.), so I the extra insulation would appear to be for the perimeter. I'll double-check though!

oldhome, some people spray all over and it works great for them. My attitudinous plumber was tapping his fingers waiting for me so I just sprayed the most important part and hoped that the stuffing would be enough for the rest of it. If you have time, I'd definitely spray all over--and if you're feeling like having someone do it for you, it will save you trouble but I'd also price it out. I would *suspect* a bathtub isn't enough to do just on its own unless they had time free and didn't mind driving out just for that (and they'd charge you accordingly), but if you have other insulation you need done, it would fit right in. The back I did took either one or two cans. Doing the whole underside of the tub might take maybe 10? Generously estimating.

"How hard is it to redo plaster walls?" Very expensive if you can even find somone to perfrom the work. Veneer plaster is common now. A thin 91/16 to 1/8 thick) layer of plaster over blue-board (a special type of drywall). Much less common is two coat plaster. 3/8 thick backer board is used as a base for a scratch coat of plaster and then a finish coat. The assembly ends up around 1 inch thick and has about the same sound performance as a 3-coat (rough, scratch, finish) plaster wall on wood or expanded metal lathe. If you are only doing outside walls and do not alter interior walls you will preserve the sound qualities withing the house, and likely improve the exterior wall sound qualities. Every exterior door and window will require changes to the jambs and casings for the increased wall depth. You might be able to find someone to inject into cement blocks, but it will need a low expanding foam and a lot of holes. It may not even be worth the cost. Every time I have looked at insulating plaster on brick exterior walls to add insulation the paybacks have stretched to over 20-30 years, even with estimates of increasing energy costs.

Drafts indicate movement of air. This is not usually stopped by simple insulation. You need to find out where the air is leaking through and seal it. Check around the outside of the window casings. This is often a source of drafts. The may be blowing through weathered or nonexistant caulking. You can seal these from the inside and/or the outside of the entire window assembly. When we first moved into our house whenever the wind changed direction in the winter, I caulked wooden trim, around the windows, doors and baseboards. It made a tremendous difference. You don't want to seal up the storm windows. They let out vapour that gets trapped between the panes. What you want to do is stop warm moist air movement from inside the house getting through to the outside glass. Where you have old leaded glass, the best way is probably going to be to add a pane of glass or plastic on the inside of the window. This is often done without adding another frame and is sealed across the existing window frame. Your windows will not be operable with this system. If you need operable windows, you will need removeable interior storm windows.

I've found free bubble wrap at furniture stores, like Debbie mentioned. We got most of ours from where hubby works (cabinet manufacturing company). You can also use two layers of bubble wrap, rather than just one. I've included the link below that gives the information and also the "numbers". Check the PAYOFF towards the bottom of the page at the link. We moved into a new-construction home almost 4-years ago, with energy efficient windows and energy efficient Levolor blinds on all the windows. The addition of bubble wrap to all the windows REALLY made a difference. While I was squawking about an increase in our utilities after record-breaking cold temperatures for more than a month, plus family visiting for more than a week and all the extra hot water and heating more rooms than normal (natural gas - $103 and electricity - $142), the neighbors bills were nearly double what ours are for approximately the same amount of space. -Grainlady Here is a link that might be useful: Bubble Wrap Window Insulation

the perimeter of a replacement window always gets insulated; we use low expanding foam. if the gap is too tight, we just caulk the gap. either way we insulate.
i imagine you are talking about weight pockets?

Hmm. I left them a message and am waiting to hear back.

My question to them was "I wanted to confirm that the installers do a good job of sealing around the windows once installed (and do they do anything more than just caulking, such as any sort of insulation?)"

Their response was "For the insulation process, the windows are already insulated. If you would like extra installation you will have to buy it and have the men install it."

I've attached a photo of what I found on the website, not sure if that's weight pockets or not (I'm guessing not).

Aside from weight pockets, is there anything else I should specifically ask the company (i.e. the low expanding foam that was mentioned above)?

The foam enhanced window insulates , well, the window, certainly not around it.
Ask this. What do they do about the space between the new window and original frame?
Are you getting this info from just a salesman or the actual installer?

I'm told by the salesman that the window will be foam wrapped. He said the foam wrap goes into the cavity of the frame when they remove the existing window, then the window goes into the foam wrap. He said this creates an air tight seal.

im am taking a shot in the dark and giving the salesman a pass. i would venture to guess that the installers know what they are doing.

The foam collar does nothing to stop air so make sure they spray foam or otherwise seal the connection.
