Want a source for BubblePack for window insulation

Bubblepack has between 3/8 and 3/4" holes of air which make a good insulation

and let light through without being able to been seen through it.

I've tried it on windows and it works well.

Now what I want to try for an experiment is measuring how much I can save using

it and then converting to energy efficient windows and getting that figure.

So I need helping finding enough BPack (for free and clean) or I'll just pony up

$100 for what I need. If I get it for free then it reuses a resource and saves

even more energy.

Try craigs list. In my area, every monday there are tons of postings for people giving away their left over moving supplies.

I use to get BW from the furniture stores out back by the dumpster when I sold items on ebay.It was always clean and came in large pieces.I guess it was used for wrapping mirrors,etc.It was very thick to.It would do great for insulating windows.Hope this helps.Debbie

about your osb and caulking question, yes, that is exactly what I mean. Some builders like to go one step further and use liquid nail too. This enhances the connection and rigid frame of the walls. However even I think it is pushing the line of overkill. ZIP is a great product. Prices around here have been about just under 2x the price of osb per sheet, plus tape. However with that price you can also eliminate the air infiltration barrier (tyvek) and the labor involved with the osb. After those discounts, it prices pretty close. Your builder can also qualify for discounts on first time users as well. It installs just like osb, and they simple tape the seams with a roller Hubber provides that works great. It is a waterproof and air proof system. Tyvek is never installed correctly (with staples) and has thousands of tiny holes in it because of that. Hubber sheathing gets your house air and water tight as soon as its installed and taped. I do not know your house size, however in the whole scheme of things, it should work out to be a small add, but well worth it IMO. You can also use it for the roof as well and eliminate roofing felts.

swmotz, Condensation forms on any surface when the surface temperature is below the dew point temperature. Dew point is based on the level of moisture in the air. Assume two identical windows, except that one window has LowE glass - either surface 2 or surface 3 - and the other window has clear, non-coated glass. If it's zero degrees F outside and 70 degrees F inside the clear glass dual pane IG unit will have a center-of-glass temperature of about 16 degrees F and the dual pane with LowE coating will have a center-of-glass temperature of about 42 degrees F (as WoW noted, a surface 3 coating may result in slightly warmer interior glass temp than will a surface 2 coated IGU). In any case, if the dew point temp is 30 degrees then the clear glass dual pane IGU without LowE coating will form condensation on the interior or number 4 surface of the glass and the dual pane IGU with the LowE coating will not form condensation. Now if you are asking about exterior condensation on the window (glass surface 1), then that is a different situation. In that case the window with the LowE coated glass will be more likely to have exterior condensation because the LowE coating will be blocking radiant heat loss from the home keeping the exterior glass surface cooler - potentially below the dew point.

We are considering North Star right now. One thing that I don't like is their warranty says they will not pay for any labor cost to remove, repair, or replace their window. Here is what is in the warranty. "Warranty Exceptions North Star Will Not Assume Liability For: 1. Labour costs of any kind, for any reason, including removal, replacement and/or reinstallation of any product which may require service"

Seeking advice for insulation in a daylight basement wall

The building industry for some time now in basements has been engaged in a haphazard "cross your fingers" approach to trying to insulate without creating mold/moisture/etc problems by using vapor barriers, liquid membranes, sealants, etc. It turns out it was mostly for naught. The research shows the best insulation configuration is to just simply let the dang vapor go where it wants. No plastic, no vapor barrier, nothing is best when it comes to the insulation, even in cold climates. Rock wool is actually a good product for basements, I'd leave it, but I'd peel that vapor barrier off. Then I'd get some mildew resistant sheet rock(the green stuff) and drywall over it. The green sheet rock is not in any way moisture or mold invincible, but it is slightly better than normal sheet rock. Make sure to keep the sheet rock up off your slab and 1/2" or so away from that corner you talked about. Also, in the corner, if that is an untreated stud, I'd pull it and put a new ground contact rated treated stud. They "technically" are not approved for inside use but you don't want untreated wood up against your foundation. You can seal between the new stud and the foundation with caned foam and put a piece of synthetic trim like PVC or whatever you want in to cover the gap between the drywall and stone.

I've found free bubble wrap at furniture stores, like Debbie mentioned. We got most of ours from where hubby works (cabinet manufacturing company). You can also use two layers of bubble wrap, rather than just one. I've included the link below that gives the information and also the "numbers". Check the PAYOFF towards the bottom of the page at the link.

We moved into a new-construction home almost 4-years ago, with energy efficient windows and energy efficient Levolor blinds on all the windows. The addition of bubble wrap to all the windows REALLY made a difference. While I was squawking about an increase in our utilities after record-breaking cold temperatures for more than a month, plus family visiting for more than a week and all the extra hot water and heating more rooms than normal (natural gas - $103 and electricity - $142), the neighbors bills were nearly double what ours are for approximately the same amount of space.
