SP adoption-changing last name of 11 yr old

I am another person dealing with the decision of whether to change my son's last name during a step-parent adoption. Here's my story:

I had my son when I was young and unmarried. At birth he was given my last name, instead of my ex's. Ex has had no involvement. My son knows he exists, and that's as far as it goes.

My hubby and I have been together for a total of 8 1/2 years (dated for 7, married for 1). Son has called my hubby "dad" for the last 6 years. By all accounts, they are father and son...you'd never know it was a "step" relationship.

We are planning on hubby adopting my son, but can't decide whether to change his last name. If he had my ex's last name, or if he was still very young, it'd be a no brainer. We'd change it.

But my son is 11 years old, and he has MY last name.

Any ideas anyone? I'm looking for different perspectives, opinions, issues we may not have thought of yet.

Thanks
