Vinyl vs. aluminum siding : Pros? Cons?
Comments (7)I've spent more than a year reading about vinyl vs aluminum and agonizing over the decision. Currently, I have aluminum. Am not a fan of wrapping my house in plastic. What I found was: - aluminum would be more expensive (at least in my area) - aluminum takes paint far better, if you want to change the color - aluminum can dent, vinyl can sag - vinyl has more brands and levels of quality available (even CR ratings) - vinyl has more far color choices available - fewer installers have experience putting up aluminum - could not find good data comparing color fading in vinyl vs aluminum Just decided, 2 days ago, to go with vinyl - because of cost & color choice. Sure hope I don't regret it. Good luck. Please keep us posted as to what you decide....See MoreAluminum Windows vs. Wood vs. Composite vs. Vinyle
Comments (13)1. The Bainbridge is the narrowest of their windows and the Soft-Lite Pro is also narrow. 2. Not necessarily. Soft-Lite is a well engineered window so it, with the optional meeting rail reinforcement, should be fine but some other narrow windows will not fare as well. 3. Typically, replacement windows, as a result of their thicker glass and more airtight insulation, will perform better. There are applications where the existing combination (usually with a storm window) might out perform the new double pane IGU window but not if you have single pane window without a storm. a. and b. Impossible to say without knowing exactly what type of window you have now. If you have single pane, both will outperform your existing windows. If you have double pane, it is very likely that your new windows will still outperform and be more sound resistant than your existing windows. 4. 0.09 is not drafty by any means and will probably be a huge improvement over your existing....See Morepros and cons of EVP vs hardwood
Comments (44)zaccaii, I have 1200 sq. ft. of SUPERCore Krypton sitting in my garage. As soon as my husband’s doctor clears him from his surgery we will start to install it. I took the single box I ordered first and clicked it together in my kitchen in front of the stove and sink where I stand for several hours a day. It has a foam pad on the underside and is very comfortable to stand on. I had porcelain and ceramic tile floors in a previous house and there is no comparison. The SUPERCore is very comfortable to stand on to me. If you have reservations, why don’t you order a box and test it out. My husband has a bad back, and I have knee problems so we both wanted a floor that was comfortable to walk and stand on since we are in socks or barefoot in the house....See MorePros and Cons of 3-Wide Operator Units vs Single Hung Windows
Comments (41)The great thing is that a house can have nice big windows and still be well-insulated because of improvements in window design and, more importantly, glass technology. On the flip side, one must be careful to select windows with the appropriate thermal characteristics that consider the location of the house and positions of the windows. One can turn a well-insulated house into a furnace by installing south- or west-facing windows that don't handle solar heat gain properly. I've read that super-efficient houses in even cold climates can become overheated by their west-facing windows....See More- 12 years ago
