Updating front of 1950's brick ranch home in Texas
Comments (4)I agree, your house kind of makes me think of a modern church fellowship hall or the sort of building you see for church-operated schools. That being said, I think the roof is the biggest problem. A shake roof or good, thick composition shingles would make it look a lot less institutional or commercial. The type of roof you have now looks very much like what you'd see on a church or other institutional building. Some sort of mid-century styled and approriately-scaled chandelier in the entry would help, too. I can envision a large filegree globe (illuminated from within), but other designs might work equally well. You might also want to consider altering the landscaping. Some good-sized trees in front could help to disguise a multitude of sins. Less lawn, too. Some Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) or another clinging vine like Hydrangea anomola petiolaris or Ficus pumila might help in softening up the all-brick facade. Not on the entire house, but on portions of it. Vine covering the brick on the long wing with the clerstory windows, or alternatively, the gabled brick wall surrounding the entry might be quite attractive and help to break up the expanses of masonry. Naturally, you'd need to be vigilent at keeping the vine in bounds. If I were you, I'd consult with a good landsacpe architect. Good landscaping will enhance the desireable features of your home and tend to conceal the shortcomings. You might find the only changes needed are to the landscaping -- although I still think you might want to look at the roof, too....See MoreTrim Paint ideas for red brick 50's ranch house
Comments (4)I would paint the garage doors some color whose intensity mirrors the brick. I don't know what color because I can't see the roof color, which should also be taken into account. You could also paint your storm door the color of the front door to make both stand out....See MoreShutters for red brick ranch house?
Comments (4)No, the house does not need them. And I'm saying this as someone who loves shutters and would opt to keep them a lot of the time when the pros on here are hollering to take 'em down. I like your window choice. Adding shutters would start clutter up the look....See MoreNeed Help with Red Brick Ranch House Curb Appeal
Comments (14)Here it is with a sage paint color, as an example, on the clapboard and garage door. I would put in single lite window, no muntins. I think since this is a prototypical 1950s-60s ranch, I think I would let it look like a 1950s-60s ranch. I don't think I would try to tart it up to look like anything current. Maybe a more substantial square, painted pillar. But changing it to look very different than it does would not be a budget project and I don't think anything half-hearted would be as successful as making it a good version of what it already is....See Moreallison0704
