Cherry cabinets and maple trim

Our builder made a mistake and ordered cherry bar cabinents and entertainment center and maple trim and doors for our basement. Since cherry is more expensive he is giving us the option of keeping the cherry or having them rebuild the cabinets in maple. The room will be carpeted. Will it look good with the mix of wood or would it be better to have them make the cabinets in maple to match trim and doors?

Depending on the color of the cherry-----the contrast may look like white trim/crown/doors in a dark finished room.

If the cherry is left close to natural color---and it will darken naturally with age----and the maple is light----it will be a pleasing contrast. Not exactly following a specifit decoration discipline---as in Victorian, Neoclassical, etc----but it will be very distinctive.

Cherry and maple good together beautifully, almost as if they were designed to.

Maple will age a bit as well. I built a bookcase out of birch ply with maple face frames, fluting, doors, crowns, etc. I was looking back at pictures I took when completed (in the room where it still stands) and was surprised at how it had aged. The maple has a beautiful deep color, when completed, it was much more of a light honey color.
I attribute this to the coat of linseed oil I applied to the entire project, before shooting it with nitro lacquer.

I'm also deciding between maple and cherry so appreciate this thread. Does anyone know if there is a way to minimize the yellowing that occurs with maple? Wondering if there is a particular light stain that helps even out the yellow appearance or is yellowing inevitable as maple ages? groschuni, I LOVE your two-tone and have considering doing something similar. Did you go with natural maple or a light stain? What about the stain on the cherry? My builder (also is a woodworker) LOVES & recommends cherry but said when he had a cherry shelf laying in his shop with a clamp on it, after only 1 week, he was shocked how much the color had changed. He had to order a new shelf. I've been told that maple doesn't take dark stain well so if you want medium-dark cabinets, cherry might be best.

The kitchen you want from the catalog is on page 19 or 20? Page 19 has a kitchen with maple cabinets with a glaze and page twenty has cherry cabinets. I personally think that the glazed cabinets are beautiful and you have to be happy with your kitchen, you are the one that lives there and will be using it everyday. You don't want to regret your decision because you are pleasing everyone but yourself. What color countertops are you doing? I think the floors are kind of light with the glazed cabinetry but it depends on your countertop choice.

Almost any color would work with natural or light cherry and a light maple floor. Okay, probably not blue or red. But black, deep gray and dark green would all work, and even dark brown might work depending on the rest of the kitchen. I agree with Fori that dark would look best here. You need some contrast in a kitchen, and this is the place to do it. Hello, Have you considered using porcelain wood look tiles? Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic tile that is characterized by being stronger, harder, and even more water-resistant than ordinary ceramics. Will be great in the kitchen since they are lower maintenance and more water resistance than LVP. These wood looking tiles comes in many different colours now, so it shouldn't be a problem to find something that will match you existing real wood flooring in the other two rooms! Hope this help!
