cleaning/restoring pine tables

I have a 30-year-old ponderosa pine coffee table and end table with a very rustic, natural appearance (nonglossy, lots of worm holes). The tops have become damaged (not rings, but dime-sized spots, blotches, and mottled areas), especially around the edges. At first, I assumed that the damage was from water drips or spills, but the spots are so widespread and diffuse that they might be the result of high humidity in our home. The coffee table was covered with a glass top for many years, and moisture may have gotten under the glass; however, the end table shows similar spotting although it never had a glass cover.

What product would be safe and effective for cleaning and removing the spots? And then, if I'm successful, what kind of sealant should I use to prevent future damage?

Thanks for your advice,

Sue
