Has Anyone Built a Harvast Table

Hi,
Has anyone built a harvast table?
What is the degree of difficulty?

We would like to use 2" thick (widiths could vary)old planking as a table top.
Wooden legs and frame.
If anyone had some photos that would be great.

Approximate cost of a 38"x72" table.

Beginner to intermediate, depending upon details of construction:

Legs:
beginner : buy pre-made legs from someplace like Adams Wood Products
beginner+ : tapered on two sides on jointer, planer, or band saw, or by hand with a saw and hand plane.
intermediate : turned on your own lathe

Leg to apron attachment
beginner : metal corner brackets and hanger bolts
intermediate : mortise and tenon

Top
beginner : side by side planks, laid loose
beginner + : edge glued
intermediate : splined , tongue & groove, or breadboard ends

Finishing:
beginner : slap on some poly
intermediate : distressing and/or glazing, and/or paint under glaze on legs & apron

One piece of advice though (very important) a plank top will move considerably across the grain. Up to about 1/2" in a typical table top with the grain running the long direction. YOU MUST ACCOUNT FOR THIS MOVEMENT and use some attachment technique such as table top clips that allows for it to happen seasonally. Likewise if you use a cross-grain cleat or breadboard ends.

I've seen way too many imported table tops that ignored this key principle of woodworking.* Typically, the owner is awoken in the middle of the night with what they think is a gunshot, only to find a through crack running the length and thickness of the top. If you choose to have floating planks on the top, you may come back complaining that they've opened up and fill with food crumbs or that you can see the floor through them.

* Wood moves with absorption and desorption of moisture seasonally; you cannot prevent or control it, you must account for it.

There are a lot of corners in the foundation, the roof structure was not cheap either. A two story home is cheaper because the foundation is smaller as would be the roof. We have a stairway to above the garage and we put attic trusses up there to have head room and storage. We did expand the foot print of the home a bit. We purchased Tedd Wood cabinets, tile( no fiberglass showers), hardwood floors and we had to get impact glass for our windows which added 20k to the price. We also used Trex decking which is not cheap, stone work on the outdoor columns and we used Azek on the outside trim, soffits and front porch ceilings. For the shingles we used pre-dipped white cedar shingles. We also epoxied the cellar and garage floors. We did expand the garage. I know someone who built a bigger one level and probably spent around the same amount but they do not have a basement and tried to go cheaper on siding, cabinets, countertops and tile but their home looks very nice. It all adds up and very quickly! We are 58 and 63 so we figured this was our last home and wanted it to be nice. If I could change anything I would change a few things. I wanted LVP floors because we have grandchildren but my husband felt the house was so nice it would cheapen it. I hate my floors. I have to clean up every little water drip or it may turns the grooves in the wood black. I bought dolomite for my island which I love but it was expensive. Other than that I love my home and we get many compliments on it when people come over. Everyone seems to love it.

I'm not saying I like everything about this plan but this plan is making me realize how much I liked the 90s. This plan is more traditionnal than most that we see here. First, I like that the greatroom is not directly connected to the kitchen. Second, both, the dining and the breakfast nook are large enough for a decent sized table and seatings, which seems to be rare these days with stock plans. I'm in the minority here and like formal dining rooms. I would skip the bar stools though. The kitchen needs work. You could easily add a window in there. And as others have mentioned, the island is out of place and wouldn't get much use with its minuscule dimensions. The master suite a needs work too. About the guest bathroom being used for guests.... it all depends on how you plan to use that space. If the guest bedroom will actually be used often, you can close that bathroom and squeeze a powder room where thekids nook and master closet are (I'm pretty sure this house was designed before we had smart phones, Ipads and all. The kids nook might have been practicle in the past but is no longer that relevant). Again, depending on who will live in this house, a Jack and Jill bathroom might not work. I don't mind the walk from the garage to the kitchen but think about it as others have mentioned. Again, I'm part of a small minority who don't park in the garage and count my steps everyday. You need a coat closet in the foyer. Could you use some kitchen space for that? The exterior needs help too. Simplify. Four different windows styles, three siding materials, two roofing materials, 4 gables with 3 different looks... I don't need to go further; you'll get tons of comments on the exterior. I am guessing that walk-in pantries and mudrooms were not as popular when this house was designed as they are now. That might be the proof that we don't truly need them but since they are so popular they must serve a purpose. This might be something you'd like to think bout before comitting to this house. Lastly, this plan might not be suited for you lot. I have to agree with Sina that addressing all the changes that need to be made to fit your needs and lot might just cost the same as hiring an architect for a real custom house.

I love this house plan! I don’t understand the criticisms. We are considering building next year and this is one of the plans we are considering. We would make some small changes to the plan, more to enlarge rooms and make a large pantry/back kitchen directly behind the main kitchen wall and more functional mud room.

Here's a table I just finished. The top is cedar, the trestle bottom is sapelle. As bobsmyuncle says you need to account for movement. I used z clips, but there are other things to use.

Do you plan to use it outdoors? If so, you must use UV protection.

Very nice looking table.Wish I could find cedar like that around here.I especially like the trestle.Nice design.
We usually build harvest table arounfd here with breadboard ends and tapered legs.Just more traditional.
I use a sliding mortise and tenon on the breadboard end pegged in some slots and glued in the middle.
