The front door is very nice, but honestly I would like to have seen the perfume bottles inside. I was thinking, as I read the title, that it was going to be a display case for perfume bottles. I see now that it is a storage cabinet - and a very pretty one.

Les, I thought I wanted to see the bottles too. The first stained glass we did, we used french antique glass (more transparent than the chip glass) but it looked very jumbled
inside. That piece hangs now outside from our Pergola:)

This one looks beautiful at night, and as I said before, I used my night light inside, so it will be lit every night on by bedstand. :)

That is lovely and fine craftsmanship.

I would not use that piece to store nice perfumes.

Perfumes should be stored away from heat and light that cause them to deteriorate faster.

The incandescent bulb in that box will create a lot of heat build up.

Can you use the box for jewelry?

Jeeze Dilly, I never thought of that. I could take out my
good perfumes and just use the top part for the perfumes that I'm not crazy about... I could also take out the glass top (it just sits in there)for air circulation.

dillydally makes a good point about your perfume deteriorating. I'd be happy if it held nothing but the nightlight, but if you want to store hand creme, a pen & journal or even tv remotes, etc that may be more practical. If you like scents, remove the glass top and put in something wonderfully aromatic so the heat of the light helps it fill your room. Your jewelry may be fine if it doesn't look too cluttery.
If you decide to start as business, you'd have lots of customers!

Just beautiful! You should be very proud! I would love to see the other piece of glass that you didn't use. How long have you been making stained glass? (I just finished my first piece yesterday!! I am so excited to have learned the craft; I still have a long way to go before I'm good at it, though!)

Joann, your cabinet is beautiful. I have many of your posts over the years and I so admire your work. I briefly looked at your website. Your home is beautiful, your property is beautiful --- and all I see is love there. How wonderful it is that you and your husband work on these projects together and then can enjoy the beautiful results. You should write a book about working and loving together. The results certainly show in everything you do!! Many blessings!

Joann, all I can say is WOW! You and your husband do amazing work! I loved it all, but especially the frog perfume cabinet! The little door pull was icing on the cake. So cute!

I am very happy with my first piece. I do hope to get better with the soldering. Mine is pretty sloppy. I did this piece at my intructors house with her help. The next piece I make won't be as big or as difficult! I need to start out on my own with baby steps. I am thinking about making some night lights for Christmas gifts. That will give me more practice in scoring, cutting, and soldering before I start another big piece.

Do you know of any stained glass websites/forums similar to this one? I would love to read more about the craft.

Nice job!! Soldering is the hardest part - I do stained glass as well. High heat, move fast and practice, practice and more practice.
Go to Warner-Crivellaro --- it is a site with a forum - lots of pictures - they are a stained glass supplier, and the forum is excellent --- read the achives - lots of info --- and remember, there is no one way to do stained glass. Everyone has an opinion - especially when working on the larger pieces regarding installation, reinforcement, etc. Have fun!!

I was worried about the heat build up too, esp with the alcohol and oils, and wondering what you did for ventilation. Hopefully, you've checked how much heat builds up in there.

Does it also get more aromatic, with a bit of heat from the bulb warming things up?

I am having the hardest time deciding which grinder and soldering iron to buy! I have around $200 to spend on my intial set-up of tools. I have heard that the tools at Hobby Lobby aren't the best to buy if you want them to last a long time. I am looking at the Hakko soldering iron. Just need to figure out if I am going to buy the 60W or 100W. We don't have any glass stores here. I wish we did so that I could try the different cutters, etc. out!

I have not actively done glass in a year or so. I know I have the Hakko 456 which I think is the 60W. It is absolutely fine for what I do. Many people use the hatchet style irons - I think they go up to 300W. First of all, I probably couldn't lift one - second, they are mainly for doing large, large projects where you want to solder fast and not lose the heat. I am just a hobbyist and just do small projects. You will find much info on the Hakko at WC.
Weller is another brand. It has an internal controller, so you need to change tips to get a different temperature. You want a lower temperature for bead soldering, soldering lead, etc. So you would want to get a temperature controller if you get the Hakko.
Grinder - I have an Inland Impulse. At the time, it was less than $100 at WC --- most people prefer Glastar grinders - more expensive.
As you read through the archives, you will find that people are highly opinionated ---- and I do mean highly!! You have to pick and choose what will work for you. Another site is Aanraku Stained Glass. They are in CA. Jeffrey is a nut case glasser and teacher!! People go up there for classes and put in 14 - 16 hour days and make 300 piece projects as their first project. Lots of inspiration on that site as well - and there is a forum there as well.
Some of the forums have gone away over the last few years --- some had such huge infighting that they self-destructed. As I said, people are very opinionated.

Last night I took the top off so there there wouldn't get
a heat build up. I put my nicer perfumes on the top shelf
and on the bottom shelf, I have my not so favorite perfumes.
The glow of the cabinet is heavenly. The mirror intensifies the glow of the 4 watt bulb. Squirrel, on my night stand I have a vase with silk flowers, I give the flowers a spritz often with Perfume... it is very aromatic.

Necia, your first piece is wonderful, I am very impressed.
I see you also used came in your piece. I am expecting company any minute so I can't talk stained glass now. I'll come back tonight or tomorrow and give you the names of our soldering guns. We also have two glass cutters, one for me and one for Cliff. They are the gun type cutters.
You fill them with the kerosene in the handle...Have you seen or used that type? It is a fantastic cutter. ...more later.

Beautiful! And what instantly caught my eye, You have Habanita! I know that bottle so well! That is one of my most favorite perfumes ever! I'm still devastated they stopped the oil, it was always my first choice. All my bottles are empty, but I've always saved them. Don't you like to see your beauties? I keep my best in the refrigerator to protect. Wow, I just had to go inhale that exquisite Habanita fragrance! Must buy again, Thanks, lol!

It must be just me, but what I'm wondering is why you have so many perfumes?? I only have one, and when it's gone I get another. I thought that's what everyone else did. I must be missing something. Especially since you said there are many of them that you don't like so much. Why don't you just give those away or heave them?
Again, I am soooo impressed with your work!

I too, LOVE perfume and have many, for different moods. Also, for each season. Some cool and clean, some floral and some deep and oriental. Why? It brings me instant happiness, holds memories, beautiful to collect and sometime the only positive change I can make in painful times. Never throw perfume away, give it to a thrift store, It might mean the world to someone else.

Bodica, habinita is my favorite perfume. I have lots of it.
I currently have more bottles than I'll admit to... I prefer the toilet water. I get it in Bermuda, as I can't find it here anywhere. I know they have it on line as well, but I've never ordered it on line.
elakro, The reason I have so many perfumes is my son has an Estee Lauder connection and gets me (twice a year)a large tote bag filled with Estee lauder perfumes, body creams, face creams and make-up. The make-up and face creams are clinique, and most of the fregrances are Estee Lauder. There are other perfumes in there as well like Donna Karon (heavenly). Two big tote bags a year makes for a lot of perfume. It's loaded with goodies, even the totes are fantastic, Tommy Hilfiger, (sp?) Donna Karon. Fantastic stuff. I love perfumes and body creams. I have a large Perfume cabinet in my bathroom as well, loaded with perfume, and I give away a lot of it as well.

nacia, The glass cutters we have are called trigger cutters, I think. Our glass grinder was only about 80.00 when we purchased it in 1995. It's costly to get started, and it is an expensive hobby to begin with. We both love it.
I have made a few jewerly boxes as gifts, but I really love making windows. We have windows in our house where we never had windows before. Cliff has installed 5 windows in our house and we made stained glass to fit them. We also made 12 windows as gifts.
There is also a lot of cabinets, that you can put stained glass in to kick it up a notch. Right now I am working on a
design of a koi pond to use as a fireplace screen for our fireplace. Since we have a few projects already lined up on the drawing board, I can tske my time with the design. :) I'm lucky my hubby like to create things as well, and goes along with all my crazy ideas. Our kids think we're nuts!

You never fail to amaze me. I think it's great you and your DH create all these awesome pieces for your home. It really helps make it more personal vs. something mass produced. Plus you're making so many memories along the way.
