Replacing Larger Picture Windows - Options?

Comments (4)Thanks, Todd. The Vytex quotes did include the exterior color of my choice My understanding is that the original trim will remain, but I may not be clear on the extent of the term "trim" The Marvin quote includes painting One additional issue is the upcharge for laminated glass on the Marvins--$500 per window. Is this reasonable? The Vytex quotes include laminated glass for 3 upstairs windows and any additional laminated glass is only $150/window. I think i would also like laminated glass for my 3 street-facing kitchen windows, so that is an additional consideration. Re whether it worth the money---I really don't have a sense of the aesthetic differences between them. I'm also concerned about reading that the Marvin windows only have a 10 year warranty on the wood, which seems to run counter to the claims that wood windows will last many years. Also, I can't find any air infiltration numbers on the Marvins. The U factor and other specs seem competitive with the Vytex....See MoreReplacement window vs Full Frame window
Comments (8)20% would be pretty extreme IMO. Glass loss may be a little more than a "non-issue" in some cases, but 20% is high, and furthermore there are many times where it can be truly negligible. Think about an old double hung window with an aluminum storm that sits on the blind stops and measures about 2.5"+ from frame to viewable glass. This is extremely common (at least in my area), and that is just about where a reasonably slim lined replacement window can measure for visible glass as well, within a 1/4" or so. I think we can agree that the measurement of viewable glass on the prime window sash of that original wood window is irrelevant if it is impeded by the view of a storm window frame. Is 20% loss possible? Sure. Depending on the window coming out and the window going in, but I tend to agree that the glass loss is indeed overstated, and that the number would generally be far less than 20%....See MoreWhite or black solar shades for condo with black window frames
Comments (11)I have both 1% and 5% white solar shades in my house. 1% in bedrooms for privacy and light control. 5% in living room to preserve some of the view and to reduce heat gain. It's a neat concept to be able to see the view through the 5% shade, but as soon as the sun is no longer an issue, which is much of the time (overcast days, trees leafed out and anytime after mid-day), I roll the shades up, because that's the view I really want to see. The sun shines through the 5% shade so much so that it hurts my eyes, so I have to position myself somewhere in the room where it is not an issue. I'm not sure how different black would be, but I've noticed that a lot of restaurants have black. I considered black, but I sort of prefer light and bright. I'm not sorry I ordered white, the view may be blurry, but the mind fills in the blanks, if that makes sense. I ordered mine from blind.com....See Moresforscarlet
