50-year old fir stair treads

We've just sanded the treads on the back staircase of our almost-50-year-old house down to bare wood and have discovered to our surprise that they are (according to our contractor) made of fir (we actually thought they were cedar as they both looked and smelled a bit like the blocks you get for a cedar closet). They were a very dark reddish brown before we sanded. After sanding, they are somewhat mottled looking with darker areas and lighter ones (I presume they were probably stained at one point?) but still look better than before sanding. My question is what does fir in its natural state (or as close as we can get it) do when a finish/sealer is applied? Will it darken? What kind of finish is recommended for a high-traffic area like stairs? Also, how does fir take stain (we'd be after a light stain)? We've had fir doors (brand-new ones) but this wood seems very porous and dry (presumably from age?) Any advice would be welcome!
