Old Houses, Lead and Young Kids - What should we do?
Comments (63)@Laura Hoefer seems like your situation is not as bad as ours in terms of exposure. We didn't know about the windows and my kid's bed was right by them. He got exposed a lot with all the opening and closing. Plus the age doesn't help - he still puts everything in his mouth. If you decide to strip them yourself, I would advise to take a class on lead safety. That being said seems like it's a very complicated process and it might make the situation worse. There are some sealing paints for lead, but you'll still have to scrape the peeling paint off, which is dangerous. I'm going to strip only the 1st floor windows as it gets warmer (they are 8 ft tall so super expensive to replace), but we decided to replace the rest. Restoring is even more expensive if a professional is hired. Have you tried using professional lead cleaning products for lead to mop the floors? Maybe this will help reduce the exposure for your kids. It's all so scary. I'm scared that my kid will be permanently brain-damaged due to all of this :(...See Moreshould we ditch our 20 year old tile?
Comments (7)I would either get a pencil trim to match the marble-like tile or the glass. I think the Schluter trim would look too modern. The problem with this solution is the cost. That trim, needing a line before and after the mosaic tile, could cost more than the mosaic tile and porcelain tile combined. How does the cost of Schluter edge compare? I wonder what ideas Joseph Corlett, LLC had, he forgot to come back and tell you. In my kitchen remodel in 2003, my contractor used a 1/4" trim piece stained to match my cupboards to top my backsplash, and that looked great because we had both base and upper cabinets. Here, you don't have that to tie into the design, so I am not sure it would work. Along those lines, though, you could paint the window trim to match the bath cab and use a small 1/4" trim piece painted to match to finish off the top edge. The color goes very well with the mosaic tile. Painting the window trim also makes adding that small piece of wood trim under the window easy....See MoreProgress on our 150+ year old small-town home
Comments (31)Teacher always said, 'Show your work.' Here's those two houses. Kind of interesting for me: the Peoria house is on what used to be called 'High Wines Road,' where the Peoria whiskey distillers all lived, which is why the district is crowded with beautiful old homes like this. I look forward to seeing your pictures. The house in Peoria, via Google maps. The house in Muskegon, via Google Maps....See MoreOur LR is 50 years old and needs redesigning.
Comments (6)How much of an update do you want? New furniture, new colors ? IMO the T.V. is mounted too high , not in a place that makes sense and IMO there is no reason you can’t move it .I would put the T.V on the wall to the left of the door where the flowered sofa is now and get 2 new sofas to put in an L configuaration so that you can enjoy the fireplace the TV and the view.If you still have some space left do 2 more chairs in a nice contrasting material to the sofas.Painting the whole room a nice soft gray/ green will have a huge impact , a nice big coffee table some new lighting will look like a new space.I never like sectionals so I would discourage that choice....See MoreKHB Interiors
