Hanging decorative plate?

Hi all. I bought a beautiful handmade plate on vacation that I'd like to hang on my wall. The plate is a 14 inch square, but I can't find a way to hang it. The hook/spring type doesn't seem to come big enough. And the other type, the kind where the plate sort of rests on the bottom, seems to overwhelm the plate with decoration. They are mostly wrought iron with lots of scroll work, etc. that partially covers the plate. Any other ideas to get this thing securely on my wall? thanks in advance!

Nicole, I have plates that large on my walls. You probably need to go to an antique shop where they sell the larger spring clamps. I could not find them at Lowe's, Wal-Mart, etc., but I did find them at an antique shop. I hope you find one. I know it will be a lovely addition to your home.

Taliaferro - those plates are awesome. That's what I really want to do - hang REAL plates on the wall. I guess I just have to patiently start collecting. Patience is not my strong suit. ; 0. Alexa, that's a great idea, and very sweet of you. I'm not sure I want to paint anything on the walls but I could paint that design o something. I love architectural prints and prints of chandeliers and furniture. Maybe I'll create some new china pieces in that pattern, but on paper. I looked though the DR Eye Candy in the gallery last night and got some ideas for wall decor. As I was looking I remembered the 7/8s rule about filling the wall. That's why my art looks so lonely. Do NOT use the 3M squares. I hung some rather light metal plates in my kitchen, and they started falling down as soon as the heat hit. I am trying something similar that says it is permanent that my hardware store said will hold them there.

Vintage silverplate platters just a bit larger than dinnerplates are remarkably inexpensive, given the rising price of silver and gold. Look at Goodwill, estate sales, garage sales. My generation (married late 60s early 70s) got this stuff for wedding presents, often because our cheap relatives got them at the bank when they made a savings deposit! The brides didn't want to keep them tarnish free so they put them away and now they're downsizing and their kids don't want to polish them either. I have two of them in a box destined for the Goodwill right now.

That single plate is too small for that wall. It's probably going to be too small as a single on any wall. How about getting a plate stand and displaying on what looks to be a buffet in the dining room? As for the rest of your walls, I'd be happy to make recommendations, but not without seeing the entirety of each room. The foyer wall, for example, is located where in relation to the front door? Is that wall the first thing you see when you enter?

Yes, scroll down to item #8; that is exactly like the ones I got from the antique store. Mine were about the same price, but I had to pay for the gas (versus shipping) so it is all about the same.

Thank you both so much! that is exactly what I'm looking for. Much sturdier than the ones I saw at Home depot, which really were too small too. I am ordering one tonight.

I've used velcro on some very heavy trays, and they stayed up for three years until I moved.

I'll be re-doing the same in my new home. ;o)

Thanks Patty Cakes - I thought of that and will definitely do that with other pieces. This one I didn't want to risk, since it is very heavy thick glass. Thanks for the tip, though!
