My Latest Glass Project - Exterior Peacock Door

Hello everyone...

My husband and I have been building a formal dining room for over a year now and we are putting on the finishing touches. I finally finished the exterior door and we installed it a few days ago. I think the glass measures 21 x 59. I'm not real fond of the turquoise blue I used as the sky but not much I can do about it now. My husband likes it so I guess I can live with it...lol.

The glass will be expensive but glass and mirror companies do this every day so that is your best source. ALL door glass must be either tempered or safty glass by federal regulations. Those glass types can not be cut to size so every replacment is by special order. Be sure to mention you need 5 of 1 size when comparison shopping because that makes both material and labor a little cheaper than a single. You should ask about optional processes ( it is invisable) that can be used during fabercation to minimize radiation passing through the glass unless you need the solar heat during cold weather. Simply because you had to ask tells me you have little to no experience with glass replacment,so don't even think of buying these for a diy project. They are extremly heavy and require specialized tools just to move across the room,not to mention transport and install. Now let's talk about fun stuff and saving money. If your budget will not alow doing it and you are crafty,I have a suggestion. Michaels,Hobby Lobby and Ebay offers etching material that can turn plain glass into a high end window/door. And if you were only able to own a mansion by being thrifty,here is a downright frugal way to salvage the glass. The afore mentioned sources as well as Home Depot and Lowes offer a huge catalog of faux stained glass overlay material that is easy to do a good job with. I have salvaged many clouded double panes using both approaches that owners liked better than when the glass was new. I suggest you choose a modest theme due to the large amount of glass you have. A colorful or intrate desighn that looks great as an accent can turn when a large amount is in one room. I like these projects for novices because unlike painting kithen cabinets or a piece of furniture, good results are atainable with no prior experience plus the latter is reversiable.

Cooperbailey, That's why the doors have hinges. When it's opened you go like "wow! look at that stuff in there!" Seriously, in person you can pretty much see that there's more to be seen inside. The cabinet would not exist were it not for that old glass. And I'm proud of those doors as well. Most people wouldn't notice that the meeting stiles of the main pair is the same board sliced down the middle. Did I do that on purpose? Casey

I am not a fan of the sliding barn door hardware, but given the use of the room and your choices, I probably would have made the same decision. It is a shame you had to notch the woodwork, but like you wrote, that can be repaired -if ever the doors are replaced. You don't have a period decor, so I hardly see why it would be important to install period doors. They look nice. They work well, and your design is transitional, so a little touch of country hardware shouldn't throw it off, and doesn't in my estimation.

i Don’t think it going to matter all that much. I’d just do it the way you want to do it if the cost isn’t that much an issue. Sound like you have a grasp on the engineering side of things so I’ll leave that alone. I think the glass choice may be critical comfort wise and I would do triple pane if possible. The exact glass package you use would Depend on many factors Such as shading , how you are going to use the space in front of the windows, Interior shading , ect. I would probably lean towards a glass pack with a low solar heat gain Since you will get plenty of solar energy with glass wall 12 or 18’ wide No matter the glass pack. Windows with a low solar heat gain tend to be darker, some people really notice this and others don’t., just be aware and maybe look at some of the glass samples and do some research. More specific answers will need more specific details

Oh, ADDIE: I remember you talking about that when you finished your pantry door. Goodness gracious, you've done two major projects to perfection. I love how you've given the pattern (eyes) in the feathers contrast w/the white around the blue. I can't imagine why you aren't happy w/your sky - it's PERFECT. I also like the feeling of the roundness in your columns - they're so real-looking. The whole thing gives me the impression of being outside in some sort of pavillion w/the peacock calmly looking through the pillars - such a peaceful sight. I so admire your patience in cutting all those intricate, small pieces. Another amazingly, unforgettable work of art. I had looked at this last evening, but was too tired to comment. I awoke w/thoughts of it this morn - truly a gallery-worthy piece of art. How lovely your d.r. must be w/this fabulous project. Take a deep bow and accept your crown, girlie. You must be as proud as this peacock looks.

Hi everyone...thank you for all of the compliments. AND, Slow, you are so sweet! I'm currently working on two glass doors opposite this one which enclose our laundry room. I can hardly wait to get them done and up. My husband is installing two swivel can lights in the laundry room just above each door so we can light them up even when the lr isn't being used.

Gibsona...I couldn't begin to tell you exactly how much time I have in this thing. I should track that sometime. Some days are better days then others and I'm able to give whatever I'm working on more time.

Jenel...the grapes are "globs" (they look like half marbles). I bought these particular ones from Michael's Craft Store.

I know what you mean about lighting it up to just enjoy it, even if you are not in that room...My front door, when I go out in the evening, I leave the hallway light on, just so I can see the door lit up when I drive up the driveway!!! Mr Energy Conscious doesn't like it but it isn't that often and it looks sooo nice!!!
