How many years can I expect a vinyl window or door to last?

The aluminum single glazed windows and doors I am replacing are 43 years old and still basically all good except the weather stripping is shot so wind blows through the edges and they are not as energy efficient or sound reducing as the new double paned stuff available now. I guess vinyl hasn't been around that long to give any really long term data but does anyone have any problems with vinyl windows say ten years or less old, and what were they? Does the vinyl deteriorate from the sun, or do they warp or do the door frames or tracks get damaged or what?

I would guess maybe 30 years. It just seems like all of the vinyl stuff I have seen gets dried out & brittle.

They have been installing vinyl windows in Europe since the 1950's. A good many of these windows are in excellent condition despite 50-some years installed.

The materials used in today's windows are generally far superior to the materials available even 10 or 20 years ago.

As it's alive, it's about ready to enter into a growth phase - spring and summer are the peak of those. If it feels root-bound, it likely it - Opuntias grow roots quickly many times and the roots can overwhelm the pot it's in in short order. I'd depot it and see if it's ready for up-potting. You'd likely see a pad or three added this year providing its needs are met in terms of light, warmth, water and soil to grow in.

So, question is: what % of seeds that you have bought have turned out to be the wrong variety? ***** Anthony, I'll answer generically since I personally do not buy tomato seeds. For several years each year I did a wrong varieties thread here at GW. And there was lots of feedback. I mean seeds purchased commercially, not tradeed seed, b'c there's a much higher rate of wrong varieties with traded seed as I think most folks know. The data submitted was very interesting and it's very clear that seed trueness varies widely from different sources and so can seed viability. I have no idea which suppliers you used for your seed so I really cannot comment further, but I think it's reasonable for me to say that most folks buy their seed from a limited number of places where there's been a good track record, blurbs are accurate and not plumped up, seeds have high viability and service is very good and seed prices are reasonable, not plumped up. That being said, there's no place that offers OP seed that has a perfect record just b/c of the way OP seed is produced. Some sources produce ALL of their own seed, some buy seed off the shelf from wholesalers, some subcontract out for seed production and most use a combo of all of these different sources for their seed. Some places do seed viability tests and some don't, and of course that's an important factor as well. How a place stores seed also is important since a viability test done this year that's great doesn't mean that much if the seeds are stored at ambient room temp in glass jars and sold for the nest five years with no viability tests in subsequent years. This gives me an idea, for a new insurance option -- a blanket clause that clicks in once you show you have had more than one repair in three years or two in seven years. An incentive to stay with the same insurer for many years. As a rule, it is not a good $ deal to buy extended warrantees on individual devices. OTOH, grouped coverage (over seven appliances costing min.$700 each) is a winner both for the client and the insurance company. Then both can wisely manage the risks associated with life expectancy (of appliances). -david

Don't be so dismissive of cheap and easy! There are many times when it makes time to arrest a problem (in this case, the water infiltration and spreading rot), insure basic structural integrity (replacing the rot with a material strong enough to support the frame and whatever other function it does), and let go of the rest. A homeowner facing multiple costly issues can't go to the mat with every one. The "right" thing to do would obviously be to replace the door, which in the end would be 4-5000. But it couldn't match the other four - which I don't like anyway. Until I'm ready to replace all of them, I just want to buy time with this one. The question is, do I cut the vinyl as if it were wood and replace the section with wood? Or do I inject foam, concrete, or stuff wood filler inside the vinyl, teasing it back to its original shape like a car dent? Should I just cover it with a piece of metal? Or is replacing the jamb (if Andersen even stocks it for this door) less of an ordeal than I think? Thanks for any positive advice to address this so I can focus on bigger problems -- leaking roof, broken drains, and saturated slab :)

What oberon says is true about superior materials, as long as it's a quality window. Cheap vinyl windows will cause you problems.

If you want a vinyl window that will not yellow I would go with the Amerimax Vinyl window. They have a AAMA color certification that most vinyl windows dont have. I have never had problems with Amerimax vinyl windows. Amerimax use to use a vinyl that had a blue tint to it but a few years ago changed it to a more white vinyl look. If you get vinyl windows you want to look for a vinyl window that has 10 parts titanium dioxide. This is the best you can do.

I have a TONNE of problems with the vinyl replacement windows in our home. From what I understand the level of quality varies with the manufacturer and even within one manufacturer. Our windows are now 9 years old. Numerous double hungs are now without a vital peice that keeps them within their tracks and allows the lower part to be raised. These windows will just fly straight down at full weight if you attempt to raise them and if you're older, you wouldn't be able to unless you're used to regular weight training.

Really check out the manufacturer and go with the highest quality you can in order to get a lifetime out of them as opposed to the 10 years these suckers are lasting.

PS -- I cannot get any response from the manufacturer or the installer as to what is wrong with these windows. We bought the house in 2006 and have no idea what is missing (it's obvious that something is missing or broke in these windows) and would much rather fix them than replace them. With zero response we cannot do anything.
