help!!!!! what do i do sd and innocent child

I have no idea what to do about this situation???? My husbands oldest daughter is a step-mohter to a wonderful 7yr.old "little girl". The "little girl" lives with sm and her father. She has 2 little sisters one is 21 mo. and the other is almost 4mo. Her bio mom does not see or have anything to do with her. Here is the thing. The "little gril" stuck a pencil in her cats ear sharpend end frist until the poor cats ear started to bleed. I know this is very cruel an she needed to be punished for this, but I also think she is screaming for help. She also told her teacher at school that her mom abuse's her Mom (is her SM) The school called my sd about this. But back to my issue at hand. When my sd found out the "little girl" had done what she did to the cat. She screamed at "little girl" off and on for over and hour, then she was "beat"(sd words)with a belt, and then she was made to eat soap for lying and saying she didnt do it. She did not just have soap put on her tounge. My sd broke some of the soap off and put it on the very back of her tounge and made her leave it there. I know my sd is very hard on this child I have seen it myself. My husband and I have kept her for weeks at a time, and I have pets and have never seen her act this way. My sd has told me many times how she "bust" the "ittle girl" in the mouth if she talks to harsh to her. My husband says he will take care of this issue with his daughter, as she is addicted to pain pills as well and he is trying to help her to get control of that issue. It just breaks my heart to think this poor child is going through what she is. Any suggestions on how to handle this?????? My poor husband is very laid back and does not like to upset his kids b/c it makes his ex made and she starts running her mouth.

So your stepdaughter is addicted to pain pills and is abusing her stepdaughter. And now the little girl is abusing animals. The horrible cycle of abuse continues... Clearly, the little girl is acting out her own pain, anger and powerlessness the only way she knows how -- by passing on the abuse to a creature even littler and more helpless than she is.

You could get Child Protective Services involved, and begin an investigation that could have the little girl removed from the home. That's not a pretty picture, but could well be better than the situation she's in now. It could, conceivably, trigger a "hit bottom" realization for your steddaughter that causes her to "wake up and smell the coffee" -- or not. But without some serious intervention, it doesn't sound like anything will ever change. I'd also fear for the two younger children.

Yes, call Child Protective Services. No one has to know that you did it. These people obviously need help--more than they're getting from your husband. He cannot handle this situation.

I agree that mistake #1 is letting a kid decide to go live elsewhere 'BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE RULES'... I mean duh! what kid likes the rules and wouldn't want to go live where they think they can get away with more? When you abdicate your parental authority to the grandparents and they are not savvy enough to watch her.. or they are older & don't have the energy to keep up with what she's doing or whatever the reason... I don't get why people think that it's okay to send their kids off to grandparents to raise, especially when they cannot control them themselves. And the he wants to be able to exert some control from his recliner? (Sorry, I just get a mental picture of a guy, relaxing in his easy chair... yelling at kids to stop jumping on the bed.. but he's too lazy to go into the next room and see what they are doing or make them stop. and then gets really mad at them for not listening when someone falls off and gets hurt!) The only advice I can give is to tell your DH to get off his easy chair and go get his daughter and BE A PARENT to her. It ain't easy and he may not get the results he wants, but if he's going to send her to live with anyone else, he has no right whatsoever to complain about what happens...

Thanks for all the insight and please keep it coming. We really appreciate it. I would like to clarify our thinking concerning the 17 yo girlfriend moving in with biofather and our daughter. We had a very clear understanding with biofather and our daughter that this was an opportunity for our daughter to get to know and live with her father. We were told many times in emails from biofather and daughter that it was just the two of them going to live in the new home. Turns out for 1 year the plan was quite different and the 17 yo girlfriend was in on the living together plan from the start. How can one feel good about not getting the truth when our daughter's safety is important? Lied to? Anyway we know the girlfriend well (5 years) and she has a very unfortunate reputation in the community, and this we have seen ourselves. Drug use, skipping school, alchohol use, very sexually active, low grades, and basically a young woman whose parents just don't monitor or have any rules for her that we could see. Being open minded and tolerant parents we did not try to stop the friendship after all of the problems we had with this girlfriend, however any responsible parent would be concerned with this person, as we were. Biofather has never had a child in his home (divorced when SD was 6 months old) and he has no experience with raising childern that anyone can find. He lives alone with no female relationship (or male) for many years. Biofather was texting and calling the girlfriend constantly on her cell phone and it eventually appeared to girlfriends parents that a relationship was posssibly ongoing with their daughter and biofather, we just don't know. It all eventually looked strange to gf's parents. We felt that the risk was just to great to have an inexperienced father trying to live and guide two 17 yo girls, especially with no adult women in sight. And how much parental control would the biofather have over the girlfriend at 17 yo?? And what about the real opportunity for our daughter to really get to know her father with the girlfriend there to constantly entertain and distract her? Anyway, we felt that given the individuals involved the risk of drug use and sexual activity was going to be out of site with girlfriend involved without parental supervision. And we only objected to the situation, that is all. The girlfriends parents decided that since we were lied to and that we were concerned, and given the intense text/phone call contact between their daughter (girlfriend) and biofather, it was best to pull her out. They could have gone ahead with the total move plan and there was nothing we could do about it. I must object to the word/concept "tattle" as it makes sylviatexas seem immature in her view on this. The situation was correct to discuss our concerns with the parents of the girlfriend, and given our information and concern, they changed their minds. It is nice when mature people can discuss things, and ultimately make independent decisons for thier own children putting safety first. I hardly see where any "tattling" could have been involved. We are proud of our mature stance and decision on this one. Some day I predict our daughter will thank us for it. Peace!

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to this board. I thought I would get an email or something telling me that there were replies, so I didn't think anyone had! Thank you both for your insight. I do think what you are both saying is right on the money, except for the jealousy thing. BM uses my SD's bad behavior as way to get more attention. The more she promotes the bad behavior, the more attention BM gets from outsiders. Why are the children with BM? That's a good question. My husband and I have taken our complaints and observations to my SD's counselor (when she was in counseling for a short time). We were told nothing. The counselor took the pages and pages of log I had written documenting the BM's behavior and basically took it under advisement. I have also taken this information to the local Social Services, and gotten no where. They couldn't prove it (the car incidents) and the rest was hearsay. So they could do nothing. Without that behind us, there is no way we would win custody in court, especially in the conservative state we live in. We resolved to be involved in every aspect of their schooling and medical health, as is allowed to my husband by divorce decree, and to me by him. Because if we couldn't control what went on at the mother's house, at least we could make sure that we would be involved with whatever happened at school and the doctor. That way, if we believed that incidents and behaviors that happen there were caused by BM's behavior, we could mention it and have it documented to use in court later if need be. Yes, we did talk to SD about her behavior at Christmas. There is no way something like that would be ignored here. As for discipline, she has gotten some spankings, I guess maybe twice in the last year. Mostly she gets time-outs or stands in the corner for 10 minutes or so. But I think the whole weekend is like a time-out for her because the other kids won't play with her. We bought her activity books, art supplies, reading books, etc, but I know she gets bored with all that and really just wants to play. But she's so unpleasant to be around, the other kids will play with her (because I make them give her a chance) for about 20 minutes and end up telling her to go do something else because she's making them angry. I feel bad for her because I know she has to be lonely, but I can't spend every minute entertaining her either. My husband and I play some board games with her, and we take the dog for walks and such, but then she's like a "cling-on" and we can't get her to go do something else. I'm sorry this is so long, and I hope I don't sound whiny. I'm just frustrated. It's gotten better than when I first posted, because I've had to say that if her behavior gets out of control, she has to go back to her mothers before the boys. I know that's mean, but she had my daughter (who is 12) so upset by the things she was saying, my daughter was literally crumpled up on the floor crying and telling me she had to get SD away from her. That was the final straw. I have guilt, of course, because that just means that SD goes back to spend more time with BM, but I also know that all of this is not fair to me or the other kids either. I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. Thank you again for all your input. I do appreciate it.

mollymcb....I take offense at what I believe to be harsh judgements made by people here. I read responses to other peoples situations and feel that they are judged harshly at times also. I may be reading nastiness into postings or reading between the lines, I admit that it is difficult to get an accurate reading on things at times. I wear my heart on my sleeve and tend to get my feelings hurt easily. I am very emotional at this time due to other things so although others may not consider that, I know that I can over react to little things and make mountains out of mole hills. I have not considered that my teenagers give SD30 gifts. To me that doesn't make much sense, perhaps I am way off on that as well. Yes I know that my DD is 20 but she was a teen when we married. I am not willing to discuss this with SD30. I feel that if I were to do that she would take it her grand mother, my MIL and a huge drama would ensue. I am not willing to be labeled the evil step mother. I would rather bring it here than to take it to her. If people think that I am greedy because my feelings are hurt over something like this then they do so without knowing me. I do acknowledge that there are people here that understand my point of view. I have been slighted many, many times in my life and so have my kids. I maybe just feeling sorry for myself and my kids. Having other people over look my kids is not something that I get used to. I know others don't see it that way. They seem to always be the invisible children. I just wanted to vent here as is the case with most people. What would Jesus do? He would be understanding of my feelings. He would encourage me to move past them, which I am doing. He would want me to not cause others to feel as I do. Things have escalated in another area of my life that puts the gift thing so far off that I really could care less. I have a concern for the life of DD20. She is suffering terribly with an issue explained on the parent forum. I'm not looking for attention in bringing that up I'm just letting you know that no gift matters to at this point. I may not have even posted anything about gifts if I wasn't falling apart due to her situation. It is interesting to me however that SD30 has been told about our situation and has offered no comments to me about it. Whatever....she is just not that type of person I guess. I have other things to concern myself with. I will continue to be as kind to her as always....again....I was venting.....I am try to get over it.

I have told my husband that we need to call CPS, and that I was gonna do it. He says he dosent want them mad at me over this. I know I dont have to give my name, but now that the school has got wind of something about child abuse. Im not so sure they will think its me and really I dont know if I care. No child should ever be treated this way. My husband dosent want anything to happen to his daughter, but his daughter does NOT need to be treating her sd like that. I have also told my husband that if we dont do anything about it we are just as guilty as his daughter.

Oh my gosh. This poor little girl. Call CPS. Who cares about what anyone else says! Do it anonymously. And if someone confronts you its your decision whether or not to admit. But for the safety of all the kids here call please. This is physical and mental abuse. The damage to some extent is done. But dont let it get worse. Your husband will say nothing to protect his daughter. He wont' protect a stepgranddaughter...sorry but it looks like that is the situation. Especially if his ex mouth off for what? That their daughter is shoving soap in a 7 year old mouth!!
Yes. she should be punished for doing such a cruel thing to a cat. She knows right from wrong. But that is a cry for help. IT must be answered!

I agree with all of the above. This child has to be protected and cared for and that is obviously not the environment that she is in.

If you stand by and choose to nothing, the day will come when you will wish you had... Children are always the innocents though they can be hard to deal with.. It is not the child who is at fault, she is only acting out. Don't get me wrong I am one of the few parents left who believe in spanking a child... not beating and torturing though... The amount of anger your SD has towards this child will only grow if it is allowed to continue. Imagine how traumatic it was for this little 7 yr old girl to be yelled at for that amount of time and have soap forced down her throat. This is by all means torture... Please I am begging you call CPS. Perhaps they can offer some counseling for your SD to help her see that the way she is handling the situation is wrong...

I have given my husband till 2:00 pm today to deal with his daughter about this issue. If at that time nothing comes of it then I will call CPS. He begged me to let him try to talk to her and see what he can do to help?????? I told him that I will not sit by and watch any child be treated this way. I dont understand any person who can stand by and watch this happen to a child to protect the adult.

Sandstone Im with you on the spanking,they never hurt me as a kid and its not gonna hurt mine, but there is a big differnce between spanking and just down right tortuing. I know the sd needs help with this issue and many others.

Good for you, even if they find out it was you that reported them... You will have the peace of mind knowing you did every thing in your power to protect an innocent child. Hopefully your SD will realize that her anger is misplaced, perhaps it is jealousy of the child, or anger towards the child's mother either way it is an issue that needs dealt with immediantly... best of luck to you
