What would you do?

So this is a problem that my husband and I keep on running into... since it's been a while since my last post, quick background: I am step-mama to 3, have 1 with my husband, excellent relationship with the children, ex is of the litigious kind.

Well, one thing that happens is that the children talk like children do with us and their mother and WHATEVER is said, she will then use against us NO MATTER WHAT it is. Example: since my husband was leaving the first night of school, I filled out the paperwork with him on the phone... but he signed it all. The boys tell their mother that I filled out the paperwork, she loses it, calls my husband, and threatens to take us to court because I should fill out nothing!

Example: we go to church every Sunday. We bring the children with us but always emphasize how the religious choice is entirely up to them since their mother is culturally of a different religion (she is non practicing). She now wants to take them to temple on Saturdays and have them start Sunday school (something she has never done).

So there is a lot of tit for tat...

Now, my husband and I NEVER let the children know what is happening in our adult world, even when we have to put up with vindictive and litigious behavior. We try to keep the ugly part of the divorce (the good is that there are no more screaming matches in front of the children between mom and dad) away from them as much as possible. But how do you stop the talking, "Kids, don't talk to your mom about P. or what happens here because mom gets really mad?" I would really like to keep the bad stuff out of their life at least until they are old enough to understand more; so what do you do?

Thank you so much for your time.
