Am I nuts????

Watching Freecycle last night and saw a post offering emu and ostrich eggs (clean and blown out!!). Don't know how many she has, but she emailed me to call her and come get as many as I want! Am I toatally nuts for thinking I can mosaic a real egg?? There's probably more than I could possibly use, so does anyone want to share the loot??

I wonder if you should fill them with thinset or something first (something like concrete but thin enough to be able to fill the egg using a baggie with a hole in one corner or a cake decorating bag). Otherwise, they might be too fragile; they would always have to be handled with care and could be easily crushed by someone who doesn't know what's underneath the mosaic?

Still, though, I think they would be cool to experiment with and I think you should get some and then do some research on what would work best. Oh, and if you're nuts, then I am too, because it sounds like something I would do, bring home a bunch of big eggs and then explain to my hubby why I need them ......

pt, A cereal bowl size mold will cure fast. If you make this first thing in the morning, you'll be able to CAREFULLY unmold in about 4 to 6 hours. In your temps maybe sooner. Don't forget: Wear rubber/nylon/nitrile gloves whenever you work with cement. Even when placing and removing pieces from the water bath. Wear a dust mask when working with the dry ingredients. Use a mold release (PAM baking spray works), just a thin coating. Have an extra mold ready in case you mix too much. I make pot feet or test tiles for leaves or anything you want to imprint with any leftovers Thoroughly mix dry ingredients then add water. After the mold is filled, place in a plastic bag, spritz inside the bag with a little water, knot the top of the bag to seal and place in a shady, cool location. If you use a garage or a laundry room in the house make sure you put something (old cookie sheet or plastic tub) under the bag in case it leaks. If you are going to wire brush or carve the outside walls unmold as soon as possible. I unmold cereal size bowls in 4 hours. The walls have to be thick enough to carve. You'll have to experiment because of the temps that you have. Once this gets past a certain stage you can't easily wire brush or carve. You don't have to wire brush or carve, some people like the smooth sides. As soon as you unmold place your mold in a bucket of water. Makes clean up easier. If an cement cures in the mold you can't use it for future projects. After you're done wire brushing or carving rinse off with water and place in a bucket/tub of water. The next day change the water, it will be full of lime so wear your gloves. Rinse the piece off and add fresh water then do the same thing the next day. You should be able to remove from the water in about 2 to 3 days. Remember when wire brushing or carving to be gentle the piece is fresh and can break easily. Go back and clean your mold that's been sitting in a water bucket. Wear rubber gloves. That slimy feeling on you fingers is your skin dissolving. Some people are sensitive to burning from the lime in the cement. Wear a dust mask when working with the dry ingredients. Full bags of cement weigh 92-94 pounds! Have fun! I would check the specs as to the size of propane cylinder you need, some heaters need a large tank, otherwise sould be easy to convert

I've been asking myself the same question lately. I was in New Mexico for 16 years so I know it can be better than this. But, duty calls; My Dad is 90 and my Mom is 81 so I need to be around to help them. They had just 2 boys and it doesn't seem right to leave it all to my brother to take care of. I do dream of living someplace warmer when I retire. As for right now; it's warmed up to -6 and the wind has died down so that the windchill is ONLY -27. It's time to go out and clear the driveway and shovel the sidewalk before it gets dark. Will someone make a cup of hot chocalate for me to thaw me out in a couple hours? Ron

I'll add this then: Durock? It's an approved substrate for any of the surface applied membranes. Sure it generates dust when cut with a power saw or angle grinder. But if you score and snap with a blade? It's pretty clean. It is heavy when compared to foam...but you'll be installing a half-dozen sheets max. Foam board? Sure, it's even lighter in weight. Here's all I recommend. Find the foam you want to use. Choose a membrane, example, Hydroban sheet membrane. Then call Laticrete's tech department and ask what thinset/adhesive they recommend for adhering their membrane to the EPS/XPS/foam of your choice. If you get a solid answer, by all means move onward with the project! If not, repeat for each foam/membrane/adhesive combo you can think of. Honestly, and again...I'm a guy who thoroughly appreciates the DIYer mentality...I built my own houses, boats, kayaks, canoes, airplane, swimming pool, I've drilled my own wells for water, I've done a couple of frame off car resto's...all solo. Trust me, I embrace the DIYer mentality. But showers? Here, on this forum, I do worry about compromised showers. Because houses are the most valuable investment most people on these forums will ever make, and water damage from a shower can just muck things up in tremendous fashion. Plus, it's near impossible to properly repair a shower short of tearing it out and rebuilding it. If your primary concern is weight and dust? Then I'll wave the bugger flag. And I'm waving it in an attempt to help you out. Just buy USG foam board and be done with it. Hydroban sheet is maybe $1.25 a foot? Kerdi about $2. Foam board? Maybe .40 cents. Adhesive? Who knows. Best case, you're saving yourself $1 a sqft by trying to make your own versus buying USG's product. For a shower of your size, that's maybe $75 you're saving. On an expenditure of how much for the entire shower? It's a fairly small percentage. Again...I THOROUGHLY embrace the DIY spirit. But with you being motivated by weight and dust? I'd spend the extra $75 to get the USG foam board. Lightweight. No dust. And you KNOW it's going to work. Plus you'll avoid the pain of having to lug a heavy and dusty bag of thinset home and the pain of trying to thinset or adhere the membrane of your choice to the foam of your choice with the adhesive of your choice on your own. Just my opinion. Worth the price paid. Good luck!! Seriously. Whichever way to proceed, I'd love to hear how things turn out.

If nothing else you could use the eggs to do EGG SHELL MOSAICS!

Google it and see the wide range of fun you can have. I would hope you have good eyes, though!

silva - the shells (at least on ostrich eggs) are fairly sturdy - you can carve them with a dremel; but I think the thinset idea is a really good one! Thinking about a design that leaves parts of the shell exposed...h-m-m-m, hadn't thought about trying to explain to DH...maybe I could just sneak them into the crate with our latest batch of orphan kittens, then when he's half asleep tell him it's his turn for feeding them....LOL!!

My uncle raises emus and Ive gotten alot of eggs from him and I have mosaiced one before and it still is fine. Its ugly, but it never broke or anything. Usually I decoupage them and give them as Christmas ornaments. They are very sturdy I blow them and you have to use a dremel to get into them and it is not easy. So I say go for it!

CURB: I would LOVE to have a couple! I have a small collection of wooden and stone eggs and could add my own creations to the stash.

Do you remember the old sugar Easter eggs with the scenes inside. That would be so challanging to cut a window in one and mosaic the inside then just a little on the outside in bands or something. What fun you will have. I know they are very sturdy.

They also make small jewlery boxes out of them by cutting in half. There are tiny hinges you glue on.

LOL Can you tell I used to be into eggery??

There was a guy on Crafters Coast to Coast once that did Emu and Ostrich egg carvings with a dremel. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I'd say MOSAIC IT! Why not? If it breaks, you have more!

I bought eggs from E Bay . I thought they were emu eggs ..........but aren't emu eggs black ? These are white. I've had them in my china cabinet for ages - waiting for a good project. I might have to try one !
I've used eggshells for mosaics in my beginner years of smashing things. My very first project was a picture frame edged in smashed shells. It wasn't grouted - it was painted dark green , stained - then highlighted with gold. Turned out nice . Eggs aren't just for breakfast anymore !

I didn't know from Emu eggs, so I googled & yes, they are a dark almost black green.

Am I nuts????
