Opinions on Entry Door
Comments (13)dreamer, Our transom is high because the ceiling at the entry are almost 12 feet so we went for a tall door and hence tall transom. I wanted the top of the transom to line up with the top of the large window to the right of the house as you face it. If it wasn't for our style of house, I would have had a shorter transom too. Do you figure you will want to look out the transom, to see who is approaching on the driveway? A clear transom will allow this, and also provide a bit more light than a decorative one. It is a lot nicer to look out of clear glass than decorative glass. I find the glass in our front door distorts everything if I look out of it (I still like it though). We used to have a decorative transom over our shorter door prior to the rebuild of our house. When we took it off at the start of the renos I could not believe how much light I had been blocking with the decorative glass (it was very opaque mind you). If I had a picture without the paper curtain it would look nicer. I don't think I do. Good luck with your door decisions. Are you going to do fiberglass or wood. Our door is fiberglass, but it has real wood trim. Carol...See Moreopinions on entry way?
Comments (2)The size of the area where the slate was is maybe 4-5ft square. Not a huge area. I just talked to Dad and he said it would be very difficult to get the entrance flooring to the be same height as the wood floors. He is going to use either cement board or simulated cement board. He said the entry will likely be 1/8" to 1/4" taller than the rest of the floors. Is this going to look awful? This is the problem working with familiy. Dad has been a general contractor for 30 years and he knows a lot, but he is also trying to make sure I don't spend an arm and a leg and he is also doing all the work himself and he isn't as young as he used to be. Therefore, in many cases he is trying to make his life easier. He wouldn't compromise the quality of the job, but it may not be as nice looking as though I had paid a specialist to do it. That said, I have a hard time telling him he is wrong and I want it done a certain way, because he's been in the business so many years, he must know the best way. (sigh)....See MoreOpinions and help on entry
Comments (18)I have to show you what it was like before we changed it. The step that you see previously came out at an angle. They had laid the tile just right so that when you walked in the door, you couldn't tell there was a step there. I actually had a friend fall to the ground! That was my biggest reason for hating it, the other was that you couldn't put something there if you wanted to. That whole thing is solid concrete but I insisted that it be cut away, and the edge of the new step had to have some kind of noticeable difference so people wouldn't fall. Everyone has given me a lot to think about, and I want to thank everyone for bringing up things that I hadn't thought of....See MoreOpinions Wanted! Garage and Entry to House Design
Comments (25)You know how the police read people their Miranda Rights ... we have just come up with our own Bischak Rights! Well done Mark! ;-) This needs to be posted as the first reply to any post that includes floor plans or elevations. Bischak Warning/Rights: "WARNING: Posting your entire floor plan opens you up to facts you may not want to know, but should. Be prepared for suggestions that will make for a better design. Keep a thick skin, open mind, sense of humor, and a glass of wine within arms reach. You may not enjoy it, but everyone else will and you will be better off in the long run if you heed well the advice." Ok, back to looking at today's floor plan!...See Moremillworkman
