How to replace sliding glass patio door with pocket door ,LONG
Comments (12)To all reading this post: First of all, the quoted post should be attributed to Brickeyee. My sincerest apologies for my error. Here's a copy-and-paste version with the relevant section. Posted by brickeyee (My Page) on Thu, Jan 31, 08 at 19:46 .... The track should also NEVER be attached to a header in a weight bearing wall. A secondary header should be installed with about a 1/2 inch clearance below the structural header. If the header bows (and they all do to some extent) it can cause problems with the track. If the wall is NOT weight bearing the header will not be loaded and you CAN omit the second header. Decker, You asked what I meant by a secondary header. The real answer is I don't know; I'm just parrotting what I've read. But the term was used when describing 2x4(?)as something to which the pocket door track would be attached. BTW, this door installation is not a DIY project. I'm just trying to second-guess potential problems in construction. Again, I apologize if I've opened a can of worms....See MoreAdvice needed! Comments (13)Draw in a to scale dining room table with chairs. I think that will make you want to move the patio door as you are asking about so you can more easily get out the doors and people can be at the table and with the doors still accessible. While I love the idea of hidden entry to your pantry, same comment as above. It seems a table and chairs will block entry. You can still make a "hidden door" from the hallway. I imagine pantry goods being accessed at all times for snacks or when having people over. So you do not want the person sitting at the table to have to move to access the pantry. Maybe my sense of scale is off and there is enough space. Try drawing in your table with the chairs to get a more clear sense of whether the table and chairs are in the way or not. :)...See Morehelp choosing 3 panel sliding patio door (pella / alside / simonton)
Comments (9)Anderson rep was presenting the vinyl clad with engineering wood inside option. Not sure which specific line it is. She was from Renewal by Anderson. Any particular reasons why you suggest against Pella/Alside - is it the low-end /vinyl part or brands in general? Would the wood on inside of elevate not be susceptible to rot? also eventually i plan to replace windows and in my budget would very likely be vinyl, will they look really out of place with a wood (painted white) pine patio door? (i dont have windows in that same room, but would be in adjacent/other rooms. for reference i replaced interior doors last year with menards 6 panel wood painted white). lastly, any thoughts on Marvin essential series (vinyl), likely to be cheaper as well. sorry for all the follow-ups, there are so many options and not having enough expertise/experience/feedback on who to trust, getting very confusing. glad we have this site with experts like you guys contributing....See MoreSliding glass patio doors...
Comments (5)Anniemac830. As discussed above, Pella has this design. I have 6 sets of 6' wide Pella XO Proline sliding patio doors that were installed in 2000. They are aluminum clad on the exterior, wood interior. They each have a sliding screen on the interior. There is a secondary footbolt locking device available for the sliding glass portion (as Michael Menn stated). Google "Pella sliding door footbolt" for pics. They are a reasonable price for a solution that may help you. The primary lock is the handle latch itself. Most of the footbolt devices were installed to be used when the slider is completely closed (as in the old days of placing a rod/bar in the track); however, when I installed a patio dog door, I was able to move the secondary footbolt to lock the glass in a 12" open position to accommodate the dog door panel. Technically, one could place several "brackets" in different positions on the interior of the slider and the one footbolt would lock the glass at the bracket position. In regards to possible intruders, the "locked" position of the open glass portion would need to be small, but still allows some aeration through the screen. BTW, Millworkman: I come across MANY of your posts and value your advice greatly! Kudos for being an avid contributor!!...See MoreWindows on Washington Ltd
