i was looking at this show on pbs called rare visions and road revelations,, or something like that,,and they showed this house....dont know how many of you have seen this,, but it was interesting...the lady started tiling her house,,pretty much covered the whole thing, inside and out,, she moved on to another location and her daughter has taken over this house

W.O.W.!!!!! I can't imagine why you thought of me, WACKY, but thanks! Her work is sooooooo perfect and professional. Probably has lots of help too. W/love to be young again to spend my whole life mosaicing instead of the last few years. Man, what a joy - to be able to cover one's house in mosaic.

Torreya There's natural hybridization and artificial hybridization... Surely, there are natural hybridization between montezuma and bald cypress in Texas but there aren't really any information on that subject. At this point, I don't know how to tell whether they are hybrids or not. There are many variabilities apparently from what I've read. Some don't have knees. Some have smaller cones. Some retains their foliage round year (Montezuma is evergreen in zone 9 and warmer). Montezuma has darker green leaves compared to bald cypress that I've seen up close. There happens to be possible montezuma cypress in another subdivision a mile away. it is very rare that they are sold so I wonder how they ended up with that tree but I like it better than bald cypress which doesn't look all that great growing in area with caliche/limestone base soil. China has done major stuff with montezuma, bald cypress and pond cypress breeding program for quite a while, probably 20 years or longer, i forget the exact numbers but it's a big thing going on over there. They are literally growing millions and millions of cypress seedlings to plant across south area of China. Those trees are not native to their land. They were brought over there from USA in 1800s if I recall correctly. One hybrid that they came up is between Montezuma and bald cypress called 'Nanjing Beauty' that I have 4 at my house. A professor at my college went to China in the early 2000 to provide some help regarding taxiodium trees and he brought some 'Nanjing Beauty' back from here and I guess he started propagating them since then for evaluation program at 50 different locations across USA. China has since come up with more hybrids. They tend to classify their hybrids such as T-101, T-20, etc like that and do some testing on how they do over certain period of time. It's pretty interesting what they are doing over there. It might be a while before you see 'Nanjing Beauty' being sold anywhere if it gets that far. It is relatively new brought into USA in the early 2000s.

The knowledgeable, friendly and professional Glass-Rite rep came by yesterday to provided me with an estimate. He had a sample of the home grown Glass-Rite vinyl window with him, along with a comprehensive information packet. One of the items I need to replace is a sliding glass door. Glass-Rite does not make doors so they offered a couple of different Jen-Weld doors. The sales rep provided me with an estimate for the eight windows (their own locally manufactured brand of vinyl replacement windows) and the Jen-Weld door. The price was slightly higher than what I received from the other company proposing Milgard Tuscany door and windows. I have to admit, I was slightly surprised by this. Both companies were extremely low key with no pressure to close the deal. I am going to visit the showrooms of both companies to closer inspect and compare the quality of the Milgard Tuscany vs the Glass-Rite home grown. Both companies have excellent BBB ratings and are highly rated on Angie's list. Glass-Rite provided a map of neighborhood with addresses of all the homes in our area where they have installed replacement windows. Both companies have their own crews and both products have essentially the same lifetime warranty. Both companies are licensed contractors and insured and bonded. The Glass-Rite warranty is interesting because it is only 2 paragraphs long. It basically says they will prepare or replace their product for as long as you own the home. I want to thank all of you who moderate or regularly participate in this forum. I have learned a lot from just reading and probably saved myself hours of frustration in this process of making this major purchase. I will post again with any further questions and also post about the final outcome of this purchase

Well i am interested myself to grow in a remote area of my yard as a privacy screen. I don't really have neighbors on that side. It is on a slope about 30 ft from any building. I thought about growing Ocotillo (there were some there before. But they are not real attractive) Any advice would would be great and the type of bamboo. I would like to eventually harvest some to use for projects.

It's understandable that Taos Pueblo requires a camera permit. There are hordes of people traipsing through this ancient home and ceremonial site on a daily basis, and the required permit is but one way for the Puebloans to try to exact some control over how visitors conduct themselves. You would truly be amazed at the audacious acts that entirely too many "guests" commit while visiting. Those who cherish the pueblo have a right to expect respect -- to not have photos taken of people and places where they have not given consent -- and this is one way to drive that point home. (One doesn't have to buy the permit in order to visit the pueblo, however.) Acoma Pueblo also requires a paid camera permit (most active pueblos do). I don't mind paying these fees one bit, considering that it has allowed me to experience cultural ways that are on the verge of extinction. There is so much beauty, mystery, and magic in these places IMO.

Are you kidding me? all your mosaics in your house and lovely gardens? and you could whip out one of those mexican ladies in a heartbeat with the rianna method, and ooo-you could have her holding a birdbath on her head....totally right up your alley and with your fabulous style-they would beat hers by a mile!

funny you should say that because when i saw it the first person i thought of was Slow too....and i imagined her making one of the ladies,,, maybe not as big,, but i think one would look loverly in her queendom

I love this house and have to admit it also reminded me of Slow's place. I really like those garden ladies, think I need one of those in my garden,

Well good grief!!!!!! Thanks, y'all. Y'all have more confidence in me than I do. Gonna think on these things!!! KLINGER - remember the couple the artist made in that little village near PV - Buceriasa? That's more in line w/the size I'd really like to build. Here's a link. Er, uh, for those who don't know, the black eye was from a fall just b/f we boarded the bus.

Well, when you put "slowmedown" right in your name....hehe.

Seriously, though, did you click on her commissioned work? Absolutely amazing! It kills me that some of the designs are so simple yet elegant. I'm the type of person, I can master the craft with enough practice and studying, but I don't think I've got the natural eye for art that comes out in many of those pieces, for example. Do you think there's a difference between an artist and a crafts person? I tend to think so, and put myself in the latter.

LORI: My daughter was talking to one of her friends who thought her work wasn't art. She asked her if she'd ever sold a piece. When her friend replied "yes", my DD said, then you're an artist. Her friend then said she couldn't call her work room a studio. My daughter then replied - is that room where all your equipment and supplies are stored. To her reply of "yes", my daughter then said that she could call it her studio. It made her friend feel more confident in her work. I was always a crafts person, and still find it hard to call myself an artist, so I just do what I like to do, and when I sell something, it makes me happy that someone likes my work enough to pay money for it. I recently sold a mirror - to my student. She likes it so much that she made another one by the same design, changing only the colors. When my friends and people who see my house and work call me an artist, I laughingly reply - artist wannabe or faux artist. The tile house lady is very talented, to be sure, but I don't even aspire to reach her level of notoriety. I have found comfort in my style of art, and have no desire to change my style to match the particular style of famous artists. I know my limitations, and am content with my interpretation of my inspirations. Hope this helps answer your questions.

I'm not taking a workshop cuz there's none that interests me. I'm going just to mosaic a piece that Riana left year b/f last. I'll spend the whole week on the compound cuz I've seen enough of the city, don't need to shop and just want to mosaic and hang out w/my friends Sam and Riana. GEESH - this is toooooooo long.
