New Mexico Vinyl Replacement windows

I am in the process of getting estimates to replace the original aluminum frame sliders and single hung windows and a 6 foot sliding glass door in my Albuquerque home. I have spent many hours on this forum reading. I have contacted three local companies to provide estimates (no big box stores). One company is proposing Milgard Tuscany windows or as a cheaper option, Milgard thermally broken aluminum. The second, a local company called Glass-Rite, is proposing their own locally manufactured brand of vinyl replacement windows. The reviews on Angie's list for Glass-Rite have been good, at least from the standpoint of no high pressure sales and good responsiveness for warranty issues. The Glass-Rite windows have a lifetime warranty including the glass (labor included). Glass-Rite has been around for more than 25 years. Their windows are energy Star rated. Glass-Rite will also provide Jen Weld if you insist/request. They would rather sell/install their own product.

I know it is a long shot but does anyone reading this forum have experience with Glass-Rite vinyl windows?

The third company will give me an estimate early next week. I do not know what product they will be recommending/pushing.

This is a modest home in a good neighborhood built in the late 70s. I have a lot of work to do on the house including a kitchen and 2 bathroom upgrades. I don't want to overspend on windows. Any product recommendations for windows would be greatly appreciated.

Its rather difficult to give ideas on quality of windows in different areas.

Stick with your gut feelings and research their install and service quality.

I don't get Milgard in FL, but I have seen a few people who like their product.

Just always remember, its about the installation too, not just the product.

Milgard is a pretty good product and has good support on the West Coast.

To replace the windows with larder units the opeing would need to be reframed and if you go wider then it would need a new header as well. I don't know what type of windows you want to use for replacing the old ones but if you go larger it will involve removing more siding on the exterior an sheetrock on the interior

kenc 2006, It would be safe for you to remove the stucco up to about three to four inches around the stucco. You can either use a saw for a clean line or just use a hammer. The one thing you want to be careful of is tearing into the paper begind your lath when doing this, try your best to avaoid doing so. Tour also idealy going to want your lath to stay in good enough condition to use again when restuccoing. Once the stucco is broken out pull the few furring nails around the window and then pull the lath back so you can remove/install the window(s). If you have pierced the paper while doing your demo you can either slide a new piece behind the exisiting or if there are too many nails to do so just fill/cover holes with a caulk. Once you have your framing exposed (sills, King stud, trimmers and header stapple a six inch moist stop to the framming. 1st run a piece across the face of the sill and run it about 5 inches past each trimmer. Then run your vertical peices from top of header and down the face edge of your trimmers and king stud. Make sure the over lap on top of your bottom piece. Get the window ready for installation by running a liberal bead of caulk acros the header, trimmes and sills. Now put the window in. Once you've deternined the window is plumb and level nail it of using 3/4 inch galvanized roofing nails and then put your final piece of moist stop acrros the header and overlapping the top nailing flange. Pull your lath back into place and nail it tighlty and taught using furring nails. Once this is done you can mask of the window and begin to apply stucco. Always best to take the time of doing three coats, scratch, brown and finisc.... Good luck

Unfortunately Simonton does not have a dealer in New Mexico, and neither do Gorell, Okna or Soft-Lite. Have requests to see about Amerimax, Milgard and Anlin. Thanks for those tips. As an aside, after reading more on this site, it seems I will want the standard LoE coating not the 366 because I want the solar gain in winter, brrr. These particular windows face southeast and northeast. Santa Fe has few really hot days, and this house in particular stays pretty cool with no A/C.

We have been replacing windows over the past two years and have had our local glass replacement business, which does windows and glass shower door installations, do the work. The second floor windows were done by a different installer who took too long and was a one-man operation. Each installer, we found, used windows manufactured by small operations -- one in Minnesota and one in Ohio. We've found that most replacement windows were manufactured the same way and looked very similar. The important factor was the installer, his/her skill, and knowledge about what they were doing. Our installer even replaced some interior trim in the kitchen. We removed the old wood windows which were original to our 1928 home with vinyl. Very happy with the results. So my point is to check with your local business and they will tell you who they use, give you an estimate, and references. Good luck!

The knowledgeable, friendly and professional Glass-Rite rep came by yesterday to provided me with an estimate. He had a sample of the home grown Glass-Rite vinyl window with him, along with a comprehensive information packet. One of the items I need to replace is a sliding glass door. Glass-Rite does not make doors so they offered a couple of different Jen-Weld doors. The sales rep provided me with an estimate for the eight windows (their own locally manufactured brand of vinyl replacement windows) and the Jen-Weld door. The price was slightly higher than what I received from the other company proposing Milgard Tuscany door and windows. I have to admit, I was slightly surprised by this.

Both companies were extremely low key with no pressure to close the deal. I am going to visit the showrooms of both companies to closer inspect and compare the quality of the Milgard Tuscany vs the Glass-Rite home grown. Both companies have excellent BBB ratings and are highly rated on Angie's list. Glass-Rite provided a map of neighborhood with addresses of all the homes in our area where they have installed replacement windows. Both companies have their own crews and both products have essentially the same lifetime warranty. Both companies are licensed contractors and insured and bonded. The Glass-Rite warranty is interesting because it is only 2 paragraphs long. It basically says they will prepare or replace their product for as long as you own the home.

I want to thank all of you who moderate or regularly participate in this forum. I have learned a lot from just reading and probably saved myself hours of frustration in this process of making this major purchase. I will post again with any further questions and also post about the final outcome of this purchase
