replacing aluminum windows with new constr vinyl in stucco

I have bought two vinyl windows to replace the two aluminum windows in my bathroom. My house is of stucco construction, all my interior sheetrock is removed, and nominally the old and new windows are the same size.

The reason is to replace plain glass with obscured glass. The new windows are not replacement type, but are new construction.

I'm unsure how far back to remove the stucco - I would only need to remove an inch or two to remove the old window, but I'm wondering about making the new installation water tight.

Any advice on how much stucco to remove, and the best procedure for water tightness appreciated!

Oh, I'm in California so not much rain and no snow/ice if that matters.

It would be safe for you to remove the stucco up to about three to four inches around the stucco. You can either use a saw for a clean line or just use a hammer. The one thing you want to be careful of is tearing into the paper begind your lath when doing this, try your best to avaoid doing so. Tour also idealy going to want your lath to stay in good enough condition to use again when restuccoing. Once the stucco is broken out pull the few furring nails around the window and then pull the lath back so you can remove/install the window(s). If you have pierced the paper while doing your demo you can either slide a new piece behind the exisiting or if there are too many nails to do so just fill/cover holes with a caulk. Once you have your framing exposed (sills, King stud, trimmers and header stapple a six inch moist stop to the framming. 1st run a piece across the face of the sill and run it about 5 inches past each trimmer. Then run your vertical peices from top of header and down the face edge of your trimmers and king stud. Make sure the over lap on top of your bottom piece. Get the window ready for installation by running a liberal bead of caulk acros the header, trimmes and sills. Now put the window in. Once you've deternined the window is plumb and level nail it of using 3/4 inch galvanized roofing nails and then put your final piece of moist stop acrros the header and overlapping the top nailing flange. Pull your lath back into place and nail it tighlty and taught using furring nails. Once this is done you can mask of the window and begin to apply stucco. Always best to take the time of doing three coats, scratch, brown and finisc.... Good luck

We're in Seattle also, and I went thru your situation last year in our remodel. There are two ways to handle it...your way, which is to cut into backwards into the house and the drywall to accomodate the vinyl window, or let the window hang outside the house quite a bit. The latter is the easier and quicker way to handle it, and many replacement window companies will install them that way. However, I think it looks pretty bad. The company I used ended up mounting the windows flush to the outside (actually it hung out about half an inch to accomodade the trim) and carving out what space they needed from the interior. At that point, we were down to bare wall studs and I had removed all of the interior sills and window wrappings, and new drywall was going up, so it was an easier proposition than what you're facing. We had vinyl replacement windows put into a rental house we also own, same company did the install...I remember it wasn't an easy process for them as the house dated from 1968 and some of the framing was difficult to work around. They did have to carve out the interior to accomodate the window. One think you might consider...some vinyl lines have a thinner profile window frame (check out Milgard's Thinline).

I agree, afsa, we have been diligent about painting and caulking these all wood windows which I believe were either Huddig or Huttig (a local company which sold out to another local millwork company) for about 10 years now. I'm just tired of fighting against the elements. Every year I have rotten sills and rotten brick mold in the lower corners of the windows. I even had my painter remove the tracks that hold the sashes to caulk and paint behind them where water was obviously penetrating. The sashes are warping and the gas seals are failing, and worst of all there's wood rot in the sheathing below the windows behind the stucco . . . again!! I don't know if this is primarily a window problem, an installation problem, a stucco problem, or some of all, but my experience with all wood windows has not been good to say the least. Hopefully, new windows, installed and sealed properly will keep my home from becoming a bigger money pit! With all that we have spent on maintenance and repairs, we could have paid for at least half of our new windows by now. I a hopeful to find a solution :-)

A sash kit with Dual pane and low-E would have similar performance to a triple pane unit. The STC rating would be better and much less loss of glass over an insert. Installation can be simple to comlex depending on who is installing and the condition of the existing opening . I rarely see them installed correctly by pros unless they are somewhat specialized in these, the ones they got right were because the openings and window needed no modification.

More suggesting it because there are options to have a wood interior with a non-wood exterior. Wood is great and a lovely material, but there are better options in many cases if you are not compelled to use wood via some sort of historical guideline.
