Bamboo in New Mexico

I would really like to grow a privacy screen of bamboo up against the backyard wall of my house. I have a small yard so I don't think I want running bamboo. I was told by a vendor that clumping bamboo will not thrive here. Anybody else have other experiences with this?

What part of New Mexico are you in? Far north or deep south?

Well i am interested myself to grow in a remote area of my yard as a privacy screen. I don't really have neighbors on that side. It is on a slope about 30 ft from any building. I thought about growing Ocotillo (there were some there before. But they are not real attractive) Any advice would would be great and the type of bamboo. I would like to eventually harvest some to use for projects.

That ribbon means it was sold/presented/etc. at that event but it doesn't mean it was made in Gallup. This is probably Navajo, Hopi or Zuni since Gallup is actually within Navajo country and is near the Hopi and Zuni reservations. Sorry, I shouldn't have left the outcome of DH's illness hanging like that! He has chronic asthma, quite severe. Over his lifetime, he's maintained really great health through diligent exercise and an outdoorsy lifestyle despite the effort that has sometimes taken. As he's gotten older, it's progressed into COPD. He was having pain in his lower left side/back area, which could have been a pulled muscle, but it wasn't getting better, and then he seemed to have a fever... This happened once about five years ago, and turned out to be an infection in his lung, so we headed to the ER. Sure enough, X-ray showed an infection. Within 24-36 hours of starting the antibiotics he was feeling much better, and he has a follow up with his pulmonologist here this week. Thanks for your concern.
