Pella window condensation between panes
Comments (15)I am also having the same issue about condensation. I am also running out of solutions and would like more options for resolving the problem. I live in southern Ontario. We experience extreme temperature differences in both the summer and winter. Some of my windows were installed in 1994 and some in 2004. To be clear I have the triple pane system which includes a sealed double pane window with a removable 3rd panel. I have the Pella blinds between the sealed double pane portion and the removable pane. The condensation is occurring between the sealed unit and the removable panel. I do not have condensation in the sealed double pane portion of the window. The condensation problem only occurs in the summertime. Pella explains that you must keep the breather (vent) holes clean. The original post by Bsman36 refers to how the breather holes are kept faithfully clear to allow for moisture to get out, but the moisture remains. SusanM05 also referenced in the original post also refers to this. I have several questions; 1. My vent holes appear to be clean on the inside. But when I try to slip a wire through the vent holes the wire does not go through to the outside; so how do you know if the vent holes are clean. The vent holes do not appear to be accessible from the outside. Another owner of Pella windows explained to me that he uses an air compressor to clean out the vent holes to get around the corners. I will try this but how do you know if the vent holes are in fact clean? 2. Another suggestion made was that the wood frame may be absorbing the moisture and then re releasing the moisture back into the space between the glass panels when there is a temperature/humidity difference; but if this is the case does it make sense that I would only have the problem in the summertime and not in the extreme winters? 3. In an old ownerâÂÂs manual the following statement is made on how to eliminate summertime condensation between the Pella glass designer series. â Between the glass condensation may occur on the exterior of the hinge glass panel if the inside ear is very cool as a result of air-conditioning and humidity outside is extremely high. If this weather condition is not temporary plug the breather holes for the summer season or raise the indoor temperature. Contact the Pella Window and Door store nearest you for a set of Pella breather hole plugs.â Has anyone had any success resolving this problem with the use of the breather plugs? This is the opposite of keeping the breather holes clear; but, this solution is only is only to be used If this weather condition is not temporary. I am not sure how practical this solution is as the temperatures fluctuates daily. The problem is worst on days of extreme temperatures/humidity differences inside the house and outside....See MoreIce Between Panes on New Dual Pane Windows
Comments (6)Thanks for the responses to my post. The windows are casement windows. I just opened one of them and it looks like they could probably unscrew the window from the support bracket and replace it. I haven't talked to Champion yet because I want to be more knowledgeable before I do. There were so many problems with the quality of the windows and the install that I don't want to have any doubts about the accuracy of what they tell me, so I'm still hoping someone can tell me how the seals in a double pane window can be tested. Quite honestly with the history of this install I'm worried about whether or not I can trust any replacement they make for me. The windows do have the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval and Champion is a member of the Better Business Bureau, so I may end up contacting both of those agencies as well....See Morereplacing single pane aluminum windows, Gulf coast
Comments (8)I am in window hell. Being on Texas Gulf coast, I am subject to new specs by TDI ( TX Dept of Insurance) -- apparently put in place after Hurricane Ike in 2008. I can only use windows that have been specially tested and show up on TDI website. DON Young is out -- horizontal slider has not been tested -- $12K NT Windows -- only double hung tested -- $13.5K. I want single hung. Now looking at Vinyl. Gulf Coast Windows -- $23K Home Craftsman -- $9K Window Mart -- $9K I have a Bay and a Bow window, Contractors tell me they will have to install two 2x4s at each mullion. So , I will go from 3inches between windows to like 8 inches! This will be a significant change in the looks -- beefier! Plus less glass. The four windows making up the bow window currently have 21 inches of glass each. Will be reduced to about 17 inch width! One guy suggested I "outlaw" Bay and Bow by not including them in inspection. He would do a wedge configuration on 2x4s to narrow the mullion. Not approved installation by TDI. Somehow my 40 year old windows have survived every hurricane to date! HELP! Opinions of vinyl options, please. Opinions of "outlaw" installation. Why are Gulf Coast Windows so pricey and are they worth it? If I outlaw Bay and Bow windows why not do the same for 2 sliders and go with Don Young, my original choice? Comments (5)Oberon - I did a post with you in the title as I could not make this go through for some reason. This time it worked. Thanks for replying. The condensation is on the exterior of the inner window. There is no condensation inside the house and no condensation on the interior or exterior of the storm window. There is about a 3" gap between that large inner single pane window and the storm window Hubby caulked the outside of the storm window because of all the bugs that were coming in and dying. He took off the storm window and cleaned everything out sometime last year and put the storm window back and caulked it including the little round space where the missing hinge was. The other hinges were fine. On both sides of the large "fixed" single pane/storm window are small Harvey windows that open - they are part of the whole picture window package and were here when we moved in. There is no problem with them. Now hubby needs surgery for his neck/back problem according to the neurosurgeon and can't go out there and take out the window. I don't know who to call or who to get to do what. I would think if there is no gap (no more bugs in there) there would not be condensation either. I can't remember if there was any condensation in there during the winter but there has been a few times in the warmer weather when we have heavy rains and high humidity. I hate the sight of the droplets running down the inner window and I CAN'T GET AT THEM AS THEY ARE NOT INSIDE THE HOUSE...grr Please, if you have any suggestions as I can't afford a whole new window now -- the whole thing including the narrow Harveys measures about 114" (Harveys are 18" each) but it looks like all go in one HUGE frame. HELP! I am in Massachusetts. It has cleared up now but we are in for another hot, rainy week into next week and I am worried. Thanks....See MoreWindows on Washington Ltd
