Overstepping or not??

We were shopping for school clothes last weekend since there were some good sales. Older sd had talked to grandparents about their plans to visit soon and said that they mentioned that they were taking them school clothes shopping. I said that since there was a sale I was going to pick up some things. I told her that when she goes shopping with her grandparents if she gets more then she needs I can always return some of the things we were buying...we would just leave the tags on and save receipts.

Last summer the grandma did take the kids shopping out there and bought them some really cute clothes. The problem was that it was a lot of short sleeve shirts and skirts. That is great for the beginning of the school year, but were we live it gets too cold to wear those items within the first month or so of school.

All the kids are really set on t-shirts, shorts, capris, skirts, etc. They really need long sleeve stuff and jeans or pants.

Is it rude if me or dh mentions that to grandparents when they pick up the kids? Say something like...."kids said you mentioned taking them school clothes shopping. If you do, they really only need long sleeve shirts and pants, or some good gym shoes, they are set on everything else." I just do not want them to end up with a bunch of clothes they do not need and not wearing them all.
