Inconsiderate....

Bm asked us a while ago if she could have the kids today because she now goes to church and wanted to get her 3 youngest kids christened. So dh said yes. She told us a tim she would be here. Yesterday we called to confirm the time. She said nothing changed.

Today dh was at work and I got the kids up. The girls wanted me to curl their hair and I was in the middle of that when the phone rings. Its bm telling the kids she is 2 min from our house!!! She wasn't supposed to be here for over 30 min. Ss was in the shower. I'm standing there with middle sd's hair almost done and older sd's hair not done. Older sd plugged in the flat iron to go over her hair quickly. It was such a rushed mess. The kids would have easily been ready if she had stuck to her time.

We answer the door and tell bm everyone is almost ready and she has the nerve to say she's in a hurry. Seems her bf's boss didn't pay him yesterday and they need that money for their party after the christening today so they have to go meet him NOW.

I wanted to slam the door and tell her the kids aren't ready. But I just reminded her we thought we had 30 more minutes so they will be ready asap.

Just amazes me how bm and her bf always have some crisis that excuses them from inconveniencing everyone else (well at least in their minds).

I expected her not to show up at all, better early than never LOL, what a crazy woman.

I have to tell you that my ex is not deadbeat or crazy but he always picked DD up late or early, he still does everything either late or early and never remembers anything, he got DD's college graduation date and time wrong. very annoying, luckily I don't have to deal with him that much anymore.

with 3 kids and one of your own i can only imagine how crazy it is to get them ready in a rush just because she is inconsiderate and crazy

How frustrating. And how unfair to the girls; they're all prepared to go out looking their best and then they're thrown off all day with half-done hair. What a shame that all the phones in your area apparently quit working at the same time last night so that she couldn't call to let you know this beforehand.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Here's what I'm thinking: I don't want a boxy hedge or something that I have to trim into a formal square or round shape to keep it at a reasonable height. I prefer something short - not taller than 2 feet. I was thinking of this as the first layer. I intend to eventually put a bigger/taller row or group of plants behind this small row. I plan to make the front yard more tropical looking later on, so I'd like this plant to blend in. I can't have signs in my neighborhood. The gun comment is humorous, but won't work in this case. I think cactus/spanish bayonet won't fit in with tropical look I intend to create later. Will it? Your thoughts? I love bouganvilla, but unless it comes in miniature, I think it's going to be much too large. I dislike the color of blue plumbago. Carissa macrocarpa fruit might attract more problem people than I've already got, and it seems to fall into the "needs to be trimmed as a hedge" group of plants I'm trying to avoid (as does Schillings dwarf holly and firethorn bush). What I've read about those last few shows them all getting too tall for what I'm trying to accomplish, although they might make nice choices for the second layer. Now that I've detailed how picky I am, do you have any more suggestions? I don't believe it necessarily has to be thorny if I plant it close enough together. More help please!

We live on the top floor with our son. We are usually homebodies and are always at home. We never have anybody over except for my son's cousins for sleepovers and only happens several months in between they have one. Our downstairs neighbor is a certified crazy lady. She came up to our door and in a loud voice accused me of trying to ruin her whole life. She said we were too noisy and we need to keep it down and she's been holding it in for months. I told her I was sorry she felt that way and I would work on it. I had a headache and I am not confrontational and a fight with this woman was not happening. The only thing that happened that was loud was my son falling over on his chair. Happened once that morning. She next came up and talked to my husband to complain about rolling noises she kept hearing. It was my son playing with a suitcase. She as pleasant to my husband and talked to him for twenty minutes. Talked about life and her kids. Also sneaked in that our toilet seat was loud and she could hear it downstairs. My husband said he had no idea and would try to remember. So we did. My son I cannot account for as he forgets all the time but he is reminded when I see or hear him in the bathroom. We have always been careful with our son making too much noise. He cannot run in hallways. No stomping or heavy footfalls, no screaming or yelling. No slamming of doors. No loud tv sounds. We even watch to make sure we put on our jeans carefully so our foot doesn't fall too loudly when it comes down. Anyway, she came up a third time during the day to complain to me. Apparently, we were too loud again. Only thing I was doing was working on dough on our dining table to make into Christmas ornaments. I wasn't even slapping it onto the table. Just kneading it a lot. No, hey um you're making too much noise again. Immediate screaming, yelling, cursing, and accused me also of rearranging furniture all the time. She threatened to call the cops on me. I told her to go ahead and do it. Later on, when I headed out, I could hear her clearly talking to the downstairs neighbor that she didn't know where I came from and what language I spoke to which I interrupted and said I spoke English very well and understand a lot of the language. She probably realized I had heard her and made an excuse that she was referring to me being psycho and that's why she said I didn't know anything. Oh, I am Asian by the way, full on Asian, immigrant, moved here permanently because my husband lives here. He is white by the way. I don't understand how she can call me psycho when our only interaction was 10 minutes from the 1st time she complained. She also talked to my husband pleasantly which surprised me and kinda made me a little mad that she was nice to him and not to me. I am home all the time, my husband works all day. So I honestly think she knows who she is going to talk to at certain times of the day. Daytime me, nighttime and weekends potentially my husband. We've lived in the same apartment for almost four years now. And while it might not be fun to be downstairs, her being so confrontational and being choosy with who to be that way with, has been no laugh trip either. We are being accommodating to her situation and we do not have any quarrels with other neighbors. If she can be nicer with her requests, with me not just my husband, then we would be more than happy to be more accommodating.

First off, you won't be able to do anything 'about' the bad neighbors, per se. They own their unit, and they're on the board, so that's that. Maybe they resent the fact that your landlord is renting--lots of condo people feel it lowers their property value--so they're trying to take it out on the tenants and cause a lot of turnover. What I'd do is send a registerred letter to the go-between, and another to the landlord (if you don't know his address, send it addressed to him 'c/o' the go-between's address. I'm pretty sure this means that she can't open the letter, but must forward it (unless she's got a power of attorney, but in that case the owner is deemed to have received notice thru her)). In this letter, describe the noise problem and demand that the landlord install acoustic tiles on your ceiling to muffle the noise. Be sure to refer to the 'quiet enjoyment' laws of your locality and any similar language in your lease. State that if you haven't heard back from them w/ a date that they will do this, and they haven't done it, w/in 30 days, that you'll consider them to have given permission to install the tiles yourself and deduct the cost from your rent. Having everything documented this way will cover your butt in case they decide to try to act against you because of witholding the money for the job. I don't really see why anyone would bother going to court or anything over a measly 300 bucks or whatever it would cost to staple-gun a bunch of tiles to the ceiling. They might try to withhold some or all of your security deposit, but this letter also would give you ammo to fight that. When I say 'acoustic tiles' I have in mind 12inch-square tiles made of a sort of carboardy stuff. Not the big tiles they use w/ drop ceilings, but it's a similar idea. They don't need the framework that the drop ceilings use. We had them on our bedroom ceiling in our old apt; more for heat retention than noise, I think, but they do act as insulation against both. I've worked in the public schools for 30+ years, all ages. I am convinced they no longer teach Kindergarteners to move to the right--so no one does. No one teaches that door ways are not a place to stop and chat. We have spent so much time teaching children that there are SCARY DANGEROUS adults around every corner the young no longer feel they should listen/respect/give deference to adults. Most children are raised, spend time in large groups where one maybe two adults are trying to keep the peace and everyone safe. This leaves a lot of room for naughty behavior to not be seen. Since they are rarely caught and we all know consequences are frowned upon, naughty continues unabated. In high school we were required to read "Lord of the Flies". I recall thinking the author had quite an imagination and little knowledge of sweet, innocent CHILDREN. Nothing made me think it was remotely possible it could ever really happen. Now everyday I witness the island, at lunch tables everytime an adult turns their back. The advise to avoid them and the aggravation is wise if your expectations are high.

Yes parent it was a crazy morning! And Mattie I don't understand why all the phones in our area quit working the night before either?? It always seems to happen to bm that phones just don't work! LOL

And it puts me in a bad position. I could have told bm that she can not come get the kids early and either she waits 30 minutes or doesn't get them. Sure it was a pain to rush, but it was not impossible. And if I didn't let the kids go with her then the kids would see me as the bad guy!

BM just thinks the world revolves around her.

Yesterday the grandparents came into town. BM inserted herself into the plans saying we needed to drop the kids off to her because her parents could not be here at 10 like planned because they were driving from a few hours away that morning. She said it would be easier on her parents if we dropped the kids off to her on our way out that day (because we had plans around 10:30). We were going that way anyways so we agreed and texted the grandparents to let them know bm changed the plans.

Sat night when bm drops the kids off LATE after the christening party she says that they are all going to the beach at 9am Sunday. DH says well we were dropping them off by you at 10 because you said 10 was too early for your parents to pick them up? BM says plans changed, I need them at 9. So dh says well either you pick them up from us at 9 or we drop them off at 10 as planned. BM says she will call us in the morning to let us know which would be better. We say fine. At 8am dh calls grandparents on their cell and arranges plans with them because bm had not called us.

This is the nonsense we deal with.

We stopped the unexpected show ups by refusing to let her take the kids if she does not make plans in advance. We stopped the late pick-ups by having plans for about 25 min after she was to pick up the kids....this way if she showed up late or even called to say she would be late we could say "well we have plans so you will not be able to take the kids today". We don't allow her to take the kids to school functions, sports, activities, etc because she is not responsible enough to get them there on time, if at all. We have the kids cell phones set to not take calls after bedtime so she can not disturb their sleep with late night calls or texts.

Now how do we stop plan changes?? I don't want to be completely inflexible because I am flexible with my sons father and it works so well. I almost would feel guilty if we were to tell bm that plans were set in stone. But her constant changes are annoying, especially when she does not see the kids all that often! With my ex we can change plans or run late and its not a problem because we have common courtesy. We call right away when we know there will be a change and we are flexible in switching visitation. He does not just show up at my house or make a million plan changes.
