creating a 'sand' look on glass

First I just want to say I miss you guys so much.

Lots going on here, and now with Ike on the way, I'm trying to make sure we are good.

I have been working on a window, inspired by some tessy that Ramona sent and I want to create a "beach". I was thinking I could use grout with some weldbond in it and kinda smear it on the glass. Is this possible? I want it to have some depth and texture that is why I was going with the grout thing.

Your windows sounds interesting. Pick up a cheap picture frame at a TS and test out your grout and weldbond theory...it sounds interesting! Take care!

I found the camera, so here's a couple of pics.
I knew someone would tell me to experiment first, that is the smart thing to do!
The open space at the bottom is where the "beach" will be.
Oh, and I have titled it "No Worries."

Heres a close up of the beautiful beads that Ramona sent with some I already had. Ramona's beads are totally responsible for the inspiration.

Noooo! Stop. Pick yourself up some nice General Finishes water-based 'Dead Flat Varnish' finish. Or, Beautiful makes a matte finish, Water based sealer. I think BM actually offers a matte finish now, but I have no experience with it. I'm telling you, though, put this stuff on and you'll wonder if you actually did once it dries. I have also very, very successfully used paint base. Far less expensive! Pick up some Latex, Exterior, FLAT, DARK (sometimes called a 4 or 5) paint base. It goes on white, but dries invisible. I'm not kidding that you'll will be absolutely amazed. I've used Behr and Olympic so far. I used the 1st two items on a door (each side) I left in the yard for a year to get it to chip. Not only did it adhere the chips (like decoupage) but you can't tell how or where. They don't leave a glued-on looking finish. Just invisible. The paint base, I used to make some stuff chippy. I put it all over another door, then used a crackle finish on it. (Protecting the natural wood underneath.) When the crackle dried, I rubbed it with stain and it came out so incredibly cool. But the natural wood was perfect and preserved. So, there are solutions. Teak is a tough one as mentioned because of the oils in it. Definitely use the acetone first. A lot of people who love the "reclaimed wood" look don't realize there are matte finish products available. And I'm not talking satin. I'm talking 3 invisible options here.

FWIW, our tile guy used a mix of sanded and unsanded grout with our glass tile splash (wider grout lines than yours perhaps). Not sure of the exact proportions, but could look it up in my folders. They were very careful and didn't scratch any of the tiles.

If you never close them or next to never, I suggest a drapery in French pleat, solid ivory or very light taupe (or another light color you prefer) mounted on a thicker dressy rod 4” below ceiling. Draw them back to the non opening side and let hang straight. Just adds a layer of softness and texture but new owners can use them if they choose. Vertical blinds are not a resale value. Nice living space.

Well, because you want to preserve the patio underneath, here's a couple ideas (not tested and true, just ideas). Idea #1: use landscaping block to build a circle slightly bigger than the tank, thus containing a layer of sand 2 to 3 inches deep (which should be enough to provide a smooth top layer, unless your patio is a lot bumpier than it looks). There are many blocks styles and colors to choose from. You'd probably need to mortar the first layer onto the patio, but that wouldn't be too awful to remove someday. It could possibly look like a decorative ring of steps around it. Idea#2: use exterior grade plywood to build a circle the same size as your tank. Use old carpet padding underneath, to even out the bumps. Or, use a lot more of the beams. Come to think of it, I like idea #1 better than #2.

Way cool!! Those beads are so tropical, bahama-mama looking! Is that TG that you painted? Can't wait to see this done!

We once again, missed the bullet so to speak.
The sun is shinning, slight breeze, but I am having to water the lawn!
I do have family in Houston, they are fine.
Thanks for all the kind words and concern.
I haven't done a thing on the window, hope to today if my back will allow me.
Cindi I am not sure what TG is, but it is crash glass, some I painted before it broke it and some clear.

Oh, that is sooooooooooo neat. I have a huge banana tree in my front yard (gonna cover the house if I don't divide it), and your leaves look JUST LIKE THOSE ON MY TREE. WONDERFUL project. I seem to remember a desert scene one of our bunch made recently, and I THINK she actually used real sand on it. Glue, sprinkle sand????? Would that work?

Hi Texasfern,

I have a bit of an offbeat suggestion, but could you use seed beads in a sand/neutral colored hue in place of actual sand? I have seen it used in place of grout for things like small lamp shades (when the weight and light blocking attributes of grout aren't wanted), but maybe it would be a nice alternative to blocking the light with real sand. I think that you just thinly butter the area with silicone and press them in...

Just a thought!

Well, I did it, and I'm not too happy with it.
I went ahead and used grout with weldbond. Soon as I did it I knew that I should have used sand so as to blend with the rest of the glass on glass look.
I don't even want to post a picture. I may try to get it off.

Why not use real sand or gravel, and either put resin over it or not...here's a great example being worked on. See page 4 for specific pic:
