Wood Privacy Fencing

I don't think this is the right place to ask, but not sure how to find information.

My husband and I recently moved to Florida from NY. Houses are fairly close together and we would like to put up a wood fence. We are allowed to go up 6ft but are not allowed a stockade fence. The fence contractors have suggested 'shadowbox style' either vertical or horizontal (although they charge more for vertical).

We do not know anyone to ask for advice regarding fencing. We called every fence place listed in the yellow pages. We have been given so many different prices and styles. Most want to use pressure-treated. A few say cypress is better (more expensive). We were told 'shadowbox style' is good for privacy. We have been told we should not paint or stain the wood. We have been given different size posts and panels. Different size gates. One contractor said the fences last about 7 years, another said 15 yrs. I don't know what to believe.

Totally confused and afraid we might get ripped off. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for advice, but don't know where to get truthful information. If anyone can suggest another site or offer some information on these fences, I would greatly appreciate it.

The question has more in common with the materials used in the Porches and Decks forum than actual woodworking.

Essentially, you need to determine a few things for yourself before you post there.

1. How long you want the fence to last. (Is that expecation realistic for how much you are willing to pay.)

2. If you want something other than a weathered gray look. (How much yearly maintenance in staining etc do you want to do?)

3. The wind conditions that are prevalent in your location. (Some fencing styles aren't compatible with high wind conditions found in coastal areas.)

4. The soil conditions that your locale deals with. (That will determine how deep one must dig for the post supports, and how they must be handled to keep on providing the proper support.)

5. Which materials are available locally as common vs. uncommon. How do you feel about PVC vs. wood, etc. (Cypress is a nice locally produced material that has longevity but will need cleaning and staining if you don't want it to turn grey. Good quality PVC is usually the most expensive, but has the least maintenance long term.)

All of that will have a bearing on how your fence is constructed and of what materials. Of course, cost factors into it as well. The best longest wearing materials tend to cost the most up front, but need the least replacement down the road.

For the price of wood, stain, treatment yearly, you can use composite decking material in a shadow box pattern or even PVC material.

PVC will be very expensive, however(comes in any color you want---as long as you want white)---but needs only periodic washing.

As far as real wood, cedar/cypress/teak needs no extra treatment. They are naturally insect/weather resistant, but both will turn gray within a couple years without expensive treatments---which will eventually fail to keep the original color anyway.

Pressure treated grays or browns as well. And badly treated treated(at the factory) PT wood will deteriorate.

What Hollysprings said about the wind is especially important in coastal areas---fences can wreck havoc in a strong wind.

Well you need to go over to the "Garden Junk forum" which is where I hang out a lot!! Kirk in Wash. state just made a terrific potting bench with iron pieces & antique hooks. so that would give you an idea of what would look good on a wall as the back of his bench is high(yes, 3 antique fridge doors from days they were made of wood) Notice the neat iron hanging on it for decoration! Also best places to look for items for wall are Thrift shop(TS)is short version the GW-Goodwill store is another place folks look & if there is a Habit for Humanity store they have stuff sometimes from other peoples houses etc. YS or GS Yard sale or garage sale is another source for neat stuff or Estate sales. Some folks curb shop(stuff left by curb that people don't want)please don't make a mess of their stuff- try to just take what you want & put other objects you may have moved back on curb where you found them. We have a strong need to recycle & recreate & make beauty out of objects most folks throw out. Our landfills are too full already. Jeanne just tonight posted a Barnwood bloom & butterfly & it is beautiful & she often sells them. It is piece of old wood, a fan blade she made two tone brown & a beautiful brass butterfly with flower stem a hammered down curtain rod. No longer junk but lovely fence addition. There is an Album of stuff folks have made from concrete, glass, old windows, flower plates, totems of glass, tools, benches etc. So well worth checking it out.I think at top or this forum you can see "Garden Junk" & click on it to get there otherwise go to top where it says forums & click on that & go to "Garden forums" & down to garden junk. There are so many forums but that is my favorite! Mostly retired people & very creative. Most any fence is subject to some kind of maintainence by virtue of deterioration or storm damage. That includes most materials. However, if you put in the right kind of support beams, a concrete with quartz pebble panel fence, is as durable as you can get. It is also the most initial cost. Vinyl fencing can be ok, if you get something in an environmentally friendly color. White sticks out like a sore thumb. There is always the possibility of using some of the newer deck materials for a fence, that are composite vinyl materials, which look more like real wood, but are very easy to maintain, and much longer lasting. So far, they aren't specifically offering fencing in that material, but it should only be a matter of time before someone recognizes the suitability. In wood, a custom built fence utilizing decking treated woods, will last as long as any wood material, including cedar fencing. It will cost considerably more than regular wood fencing materials. In Texas, metal posts are best, and to make the fence last longer, a concrete or stone base under the fencing, to keep the wood away from ground moisture, will make the fence last longer. Naturally, any wood fence, will require frequent staining to help protect the wood from moisture, but if the pickets are allowed to go to the ground, water will wick into the wood end grain, and the wood will rot from within, in spite of the staining. (The best staining is NOT from a commercial service. Theirs breaks down in about 6 mos. You need to use a quality product and do it yourself, in 2-3 coats, initially.)

I know this is off topic but these fences are part of the garden and landscape. I put one in around my property 2 years ago. It was pressure treated wood. I was told to leave it for 2 years before painting or staining. We would like to stain it. I can't find information as to what to use on it. So much conflicting information on line. I tried Home Depot and Lowes and didn't trust the advice as they were just selling whatever was called 'stain.' I'm hiring someone to do it and do not want to throw money away. I'd really appreciate any advice on a product which will hold up to the sun. My fence covers all four sides of the property. The front is what concerns me the most. I have both situations in my yard. The neighbor behind me added a wood fence and left the shorter chain link fence in place for whatever reason (happened before I bought the house). It's an eyesore but I'm growing lots of evergreen plants, including vines so it's slowly disappearing. A few years ago I wanted to replace a short, badly damaged, rusting chainlink fence along one side of my yard with a six-foot wood fence. I contacted the owners (absentee landlords) and asked if they would make a small financial contribution to the project, and in return I would have the damaged fence and a diseased tree removed, the new fence installed with a design we both approved, add a gate so their tenants could access their side yard, and manage the entire project. They said no. So my arborist wrote a letter stating that the diseased tree was in danger of falling on our houses. The owners were then forced to pay for it's removal at a cost I'm sure was more than I would have accepted had they offered it to me. I installed the wood fence in front of the ugly chain link fence which devalues their property. Penny wise and pound foolish could explain your fence situation.
