Take into consideration how tall your partner is. I purchased one of these beds for my daughter and had to return it as her husband at 6'1" was too tall and his feet hit the footboard.

I like the 2nd and 3rd bed. Very classic lines that are timeless. The 4th bed IMO is a style I consider cartoon(ish) the footboard is silly. (sorry) I personally do not like when furniture makers attempt to copy and antique bed and the proportions are off, and then they add these odd elements. I hope I am not offending a bed you adore, but you asked for opinions and instead of sugar coating and telling you what you want to hear, I decided to be honest in my opinion, since I believe that is what you are looking for. Go with something classic and you should like it for many years.

I prefer the 2nd. It is what I think of sophistication- understated elegance. It looks as though you could easily mix & match furniture with it- timeless, as noted above. Also, it won't overwhelm your bedding choice.

Well, you mention sophisticated, but not whether you prefer traditional or streamlined to modern. The last two beds seem more country/provincial/traditional to me, while the sleigh beds you are looking at adapt to a variety of styles. They are all lovely, and trust me, from a woman with red wallpaper striped with leopard in her bathroom, you have not begun to approach over the top :)

I like #2. I prefer a simple yet beautiful look and it hits the nail on the head. The lines are lovely and the wood looks beautiful. My second choice would be #1 I suppose. #3 is OK but it's getting a bit ornate for my taste. The last two are just too ornate and over the top for me.

#2. The others just look cheap to me--whether they are or not. :)

I like #2 the best, with #1 coming in a close second. Personally, for my tastes, I think the last two beds are garish, and so extreme that the only place they'd look suitable would be in a European estate with 18 foot ceilings and palace size rooms, or at the Biltmore.

I like #2 also. It's very close to our walnut sleigh bed from Ethan Allen. DH is 6ft and fits in it.

I agree, the last two are a bit over the top. #2 will also go with a variety of furniture styles/finished and you can get away from using a "set."

I like #2 the best, and have 2 of them in my boys' room! We've had them for over 15 years and they stand the test of time. They're classic and go with everything. You can dress with either a duvet and show the sideboard, or a spread and it looks good. Good luck.

I love allison0704's bed so it would be #2 for me, also.

I have a sleigh bed and haven't tired of it the way I am tiring of even seeing the beds with such high headboards.

Problem is...it's hard enough to make the look of really ornate and huge pieces work when you're talking Horchow prices and then I still don't love them. When you're talking budget prices, it is even harder.

You say you want sophistication and you can get that with your comforter, window treatments, lamps, pictures...

I like #2 also. It seems more versatile and has nice, clean lines.

Thanks, everyone! You've done a great job of stearing me in the right direction. I've always loved the victorian era and I think that's what attracts me to the last two beds, but I had a feeling I should keep it more simple. Out of the sleigh beds, I kind of liked #3 the best, but it was the most expensive, so I'm glad that was no one's favorite.

nthemdl - It's just me and my dogs in this bed and I'm 5'2" :) The only thing that would be a problem is that I currently keep a bench at the foot of my bed so the dogs can jump on the bed and the footboard would prevent that. I just love the idea of a footboard though.

bnicebkind - I wasn't offended at all. I was honestly worried that other people might look at it that way and even though my bedroom is ultimately for me, I still want other people to think "wow" when they see it.

bigdtc - I'm not sure what streamlined is, but I like traditional and old looking (if that's a style). I also like French Country and Shabby Chic, but I'm not sure that's the direction I want to go. I definitely don't like modern or contemporary.

I just looked to see where I found bed #2 and it's from Haverty's. The regular price for a Queen is $699 and it's marked down to $599. Too bad I'm not ready to buy right now. I have a fairly new king size mattress and it doesn't show the bed in anything besides the Queen, so I don't know if it's a discontinued bed or if that's all they make it in. I would actually rather have a Queen, but that would mean the expense of a new mattress. Definitely something to think about.

I prefer #1, then #2. Don't care for any of the rest. Number 1 has the panel effect on it, which makes the bed a little more interesting to me.

I like #2 the best, especially if you are going for a pared-down, sophisticated look.

I like #2. We had a sleigh bed long ago and far away. I bought it at an estate sale of one of my spinster high school teachers; her grandmother owned the bed and both of them died in that bed. I felt an attachment to it as she was my favorite teacher of all time. Though she was not young when she taught our senior English class, she was a great teacher of English language and literature.

Our #2 son inherited. Now his son sleeps in it because #2 said the bed shrunk as he grew. He is tall, so I give him that. His son will probably grow up to be as tall and outgrow it, at which time I hope he passes it on to his son. Solid mahogany and they just don't make 'em like that anymore.

I just have such an affection for sleigh beds.

They are all attractive and most require a rather large room to look right.

Laurie: What is it about a sleigh bed that we all love? I've purchased many beds through the years and my all time favorite is DD(16)'s white disrtressed sleigh bed. It's my neighbor's and friends all-time favorite bed! I'd love to buy a dark wood sleigh bed but sadly it's not in my near future. Have you decided which one is the lucky bed?

mldao - I'm not really ready to by yet, but bed #2 is on sale for $599 so it kills me that I can't go ahead and get it. There's a chance that I may move next summer, so I was waiting until then to buy a bed.

My DH and I are wanting a sleigh bed too, and #2 is very similar to what we were looking for. It seems the most homey as if it was an inherited family piece.
Dont worry when you are ready you will find one maybe even one that you know on the spot that it is the one!
