Reveal of my Flow Blue Kitchen transformation

Thanks to all the wonderful advice I got from you earlier when I asked about how I could best display my flow blue plates, I wanted to share the kitchen transformation with you. We're just thrilled with the way it all turned out! It has a very special significance for me because it lets me honor the collection that my mother, (who died unexpectedly young when I was only 28), had begun in the 50's when I was just a child. She collected the majority of these plates through the years of my childhood, yet they were just given to me two years ago when my dad passed away. He took good care of them for over 25 years, and I've since added a few plates to the collection.

My3dogs, I owe you a *special* thanks, both for all your suggestions about the plate rail and for the super, easy, yet beautiful valence pattern instructions. I whipped those up in just a couple hours and was delighted with how easy they came together. My DH, who usually seems to take my sewing abilities pretty much for granted, and rarely says much more than a "that's nice", actually raved about the valences. He thought they were "beautiful" and "creative"..... I told him that all the praise for creativity needed to go to you, since this was your pattern.

Now the question is, what do I do about the french door and window area leading to the porch? Should I leave it as it is? We keep that open as possible because it looks directly onto the water, and because of that we don't like to restrict the view, or have any issues with privacy. Any suggestions?

OMG!!!!! I'm supposed to be working, but I'm sneaking the occasional peek here.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!!! The word transformation is really appropriately used here. The yellow sets off your plates and the beautiful china cabinet so much better than the blue, IMO.

I am SO glad you weren't insulted when I suggested a different background color. You've done this in record time, and I don't think I have EVER had a 'hubby' get excited about my valance design. Please tell him for me that he has made my day, along with your 'new' kitchen! Take a bow - you certainly deserve it.

Miffy bunny, the grout is like a light beige, practically white. i can get the name for you. I wanted a medium grey but sent my husband to HD and that's what he came back with. :) Legallin - The chandalier is called Bling by Robert Abbey. It's an imitation of a MUCH pricier one called Pear Ochre. It was still fairly pricey though and definitely one of our "splurges". The island is 84" wide with standard 24" deep base cabs but we had the counter top cut a bit wider to give extra room behind the faucet. So it's about 27". If you need the storage DEFINITELY go with those extra cabs under the peninsula. I really love them - we put our millions of wine glasses there and other things that we rarely use. I'm not sure where else I'd put that stuff. The peninsula IS really wide, is my only problem. Like - when we are sitting at the counter I wish the person standing on the other end was a bit closer. But again, I needed the storage so I wouldn't change it. And seriously thank you for such kind words! I still feel like I question many of my choices (and style, even, although I didn't have many options with our weird 70's house) so it's so helpful to hear positive feedback!

The depth of dining area from slider to hall wall is around 125"-130". The island has stack of 18" drawers and 24" cabinet with roll-outs. We did 11" overhang on two adjacent sides, so total island countertop size is 53" x 35".

Another place where it looks not only like a completely different kitchen, but so much bigger! You really planned your space well. Re: Your china hutch. I've been working with some specialty paints called CC Caldwell and Reclaim I found online sold by this lady, Patty Henning out of Detroit. I'm a former Michigander. :) Anyway, she specializes in finishing. Faux, refurnishings, techniques, stenciling, etc. I immediately thought of some of her colors over that pretty red. So before you touch up, check her out. I think it's fabfinishes.org, but usually I just search "Patty Henning". Back to you: Enjoy it. It's absolutely beautiful.

Just took another peek, and I LOVE the new striped fabric on the chair seats. I really like having different patterns in a room like you've done here. It's such a welcoming room!

How gorgeous! The yellow really does set off your collection beautifully and I love the valances and the new striped seats. brilliant! I also love the change in your china cabinet and the dropdown desk. very lovely. Is that gorgeous lampshade with the big tassels one that you decorated or did you buy it?

Flow blue and toile are each so lovely, and the combination of the two is a winner!

Oh, you've all made my day, your comments were so kind! The yellow color really changes the whole feel of the room, and I wish you could see it in person, because it's even softer than it looks on screen. This is the same yellow I have in my living/dining room which is open and adjacent to the kitchen, so the flow looks visually better than when I had the blue. I wouldn't have done it, though, except for your encouragement, and I can see now how it really helps to make the plates pop.

The place mats and lampshade are still out of the older blue and ivory toile that I had in here in the beginning, yet the new yellow and blue is subdued enough that the two different patterns don't clash with each other. I wanted to keep those because that was the fabric that came from the tablecloths that I made for my DD's wedding, and it's a not often seen toile pattern.

I had most of the work done last week, but had to go up to Charleston to visit my grands for four days of R and R after painting that kitchen FOUR TIMES in less than a week and installing all the bead board and wainscoting. I don't want to see another paint roller or brush for at least a year......(but I really do need to update my bathroom...LOL).

Thanks for all the encouragement. I've learned a lot from all of you in the few weeks since I joined GW - everyone is so talented!

It does make a significant difference and I am so happy you did it. It is not only beautiful but I think you LOVE it now as before, when you really liked it. Liking and loving simultaneously are important!

Rhett went to Charleston, too. He told Scarlet he was returning to charm and culture. :)

I love the yellow with the blue, it really sets the plates off. I love your valances, too. Very nice. The plate rack over the door is wonderful.

You have such a beautiful view, I wouldn't think you would want to cover it up.

No, the bedroom is a Valspar color called Spun Honey. My living and dining room and kitchen are all another Valspar color called Perkins Cove. Until just recently, we didn't have a local Sherwin Williams distributor, so I'm used to going close by to Lowes for paint purchases.

The shelf w/the corbels against the yellow of the wall is perfect. Love all the little touches. Everything looks so warm and inviting. Makes me want to sit down at your table, with a cup of tea, and have a 'chat'!! Also, from one toile lover to another.... Love the Toile!! It fits in perfectly How wonderful to have your Mother's collection 'out in the open' to enjoy every day. So happy for you..

I usually lurk, but just wanted to pop in and say your room is gorgeous and the yellow just makes the blue SING! Love the valances, love the beadboard, love the plates! What a beautiful job you did, it's stunning.
