I've Been Called Out at the Paint Store!

There's no more hiding my face or pretending that I don't go to SW anymore (and there are 2 that I use!).

They were bringing me my Hallway & DR color (lived w/ the sample and it's a good go!) and the guy looked at me and said 'Sally Joe, right?' (not my real name but you get the idea).

They recognize me now and can clearly put both first AND last name together w/ my face.

He laughed when he saw the horrified look on my face.

Can anyone say 12 step program?

Ahhhh ... See, I thought this was going to be a post about behaving badly at the paint store. Alas, all you did was show your face (more than) a few times and have now become a regular.

The family is already hooked into social services. They ARE receiving the help that they qualify for. They get custodial care 5 days a week, for seven hours each day. They COULD have sent him to a nursing home--but only one that would accept medicaid patients. Their private insurance would only cover...I think it was 90 days. That would have been easier for the family--but he'd have "turned his face to the wall." Thomas wrote his own advanced directives when he turned 18. The hospital had to get his permission to insert (install?) his stomach-port feeding tube. He has the option of having it removed...should he so desire. I don't think he'll go that route, unless he fails to improve. Susan--I'll get on that web-search right away. If you are willing to help...I'll keep you in mind as well. I don't think any of these modifications that Paige wants for her house are hurry-up-and-do-it-yesterday...but folks at church want to help--and keep asking her what they can do...so she's been putting together her "in a perfect world" list. I hope you have a FABULOUS time in Norway. Remember--whatever you buy--you have to get home! ;~) Florence,Deb,Sammy, Carla--Thanks for the kind words. Keep Thomas and family in your prayers/positive energy list. I've been over on That Home Site--there is a lighting forum! One of the memebers has offered to help me with a lighting plan once we have the blueprint for the room--he says we should know furniture and art placement before LP is designed. Oooo, Ooo, that red sandy loam looks like central/east Tx, like around Columbus, Halletsville or Giddings. ANYTHING grows there. The HEB roses are a bargin, but the roots are chopped pretty short. The first year I planted a Duchesse from them it sulked it's looking good now. Pinkie is a bloom machine once she gets established. Ducher is great, Caldwell Pink is a workhorse (& it roots easy--let me know if you'd like me to send you one). For companions, I've had very good luck with dianthus. I pick up the .25 single pots or $1.00 six-pack plants that Lowes throws away on a regular basis. Within a year each plant is a huge clump. Native wildflowers are wonderful, too. Since it looks like you have a pasture, dig up some bluebonnets, coreopsis, mealy sage, etc.--whatever is blooming in your area, as they bloom, & transplant into your bed. They LOVE living in a cultivated watered bed. The little native "rain lilies" make a beautiful border when they are thickly planted. Alyssium does well in my zone until the heat really sets in. Looks like you have a wonderful space to fill. Have fun!

Gardenia, it is. Ann, your description of it scrambling around are completely dead-on. In fact, the first photo I posted is a cane that's gone up a small cedar tree, is hanging down, and has sent out that glorious cluster of flowers. How do things get by the road like this? My guess on this one is that this is probably a very derelict old house site -- so far gone that there's no trace of the house. The rose is growing beside the service road, and there's cleome coming up in the sunnier areas. This rose had scrambled over and among the poison ivy and honeysuckle, and was heading for the road. The two little rooted pieces that I got were probably run over at one time, as someone pulled off onto the shoulder -- and they very happily healed that injury by growing roots and new little canes. Florence, your Gardenia looks just like this rose. The thing that seals it for me is how the petsla on the open bloom sort of droop. like they're too delicate to stay upright. Your pictures are lovely. What is the pink rose you're growing with it? Berrytea, from what I've seen of the photos of your rose, I'm not sure it's Mary Lovett. I just went down to check out the buds on my ML, and they're definitely white. This is a good time of year to do comparisons, since the once-bloomers will be blooming, and we can put our heads together and try again to come up with an ID for you. (I have just about every wichurana rambler I can get my hands on -- they're still small, but we can still use them for comparison.) Can you get more photos of your rose this year? Kathy, we have no tornado damage right here. The one you see on the news was about 5 miles south of us, just beyond Geico on Rt. 17. I came across the scene the other day, as I was hitting a back road route to avoid the awful traffic. It's surreal to see the walls of a house missing, yet clothes still hanging in the family's walk-in closet. There was a second tornado just south of downtown Fredericksburg that took down a farmer's barn and part of a warehouse, tore off a couple of warehouse roofs, and leveled hundreds of trees. That one missed my other house by about 3 miles. It's been a very stormy week around here. eibren, those photos do look a lot like my rose. I have Penelope, though she's still a baby. Aren't her flowers much smaller? The ones on my rose are 3" or so. I'm gonna have to check out all these poison ivy remedies you all recommend. Five years of warfare here on the farm has rid the place of most of it, but I still come across it from time to time (like when I'm rustling). I took the advice of the group. I found a qualified professional. He took a look at the issues. Normally, this guy does mostly commercial. He has a small group of referral only residential customers. He said that there was no need to replace either the 10 year-old Trane heat pump or the slightly older 80% efficiency backup natural gas furnace. They had more years of satisfactory service. He did warn me that coolants would be changing in a year or so. The old stuff will start to get scarce. That's not a problem until the heat pump springs a leak. He suggested for immediate attention he would remove all the stopgap tape and mastic. He would properly align the plenum and clean the coil while he had access to it. Then he would button it all up. He agreed that the vent pipe was fine as is. I told him we would be doing a renovation in the near future and would undertake to address the situation when the wall was opened. He said that a new double insulated pipe could be inserted through the roof, if necessary. But, as things currently stood it was okay. He said to develop a phased plan. We will think about adding more returns replacing duct work in the future. I like how he addressed things. We felt like we were dealing with a used car salesman when we were dealing with the first guy. I called and cancelled the replacement appointment. This company has lost my business. I know I didn't provide all of the system details, but I appreciate the second opinions. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. You've saved me some money and a lot of wasted effort.

Sally Jo, what's really bad is when you know the first name of each of the guys that WORK at SW, and they don't wear name tags!! I can remember a time when I knew all the first names of the guys at our local paint store, and they called me by my first name, too. When they saw me coming, they'd roll their eyes and with a big smile, say, "Heidi, what are you working on this time?"........ Some people never know when to put the paint brush away, and apparently you're one of them, too!

Oh, I don't think that is so bad to remember customers.

I thought you were going to say they wouldn't sell you the color you wanted because THEY didn't like it.

I remember when I was having my garage painted and the painter guy I hired kept trying to talk me out of the color I picked. I was really irked.

I got eye rolls and the "you won't like it" speech when I had my new Formica counters installed. The guy even said that in all the years he had been installing Formica counters, that nobody, just nobody, had picked that pattern. Soooo, Formica just makes patterns that nobody wants, just for their own amusement??? Suuuure.

Oh, geez - my paint guys have known me by name (and my dog who has the run of the store) for years. They know which room I'm testing paint for and when I finally make a decision THEY label the can with the room, not me!

I got eye rolls and the "you won't like it" speech when I had my new Formica counters installed.

I had the same experience with counters - they couldn't believe that I was choosing a dark red, which matched one color in the pattern of the flooring.

LOL the people are the Ace Hardware know me well now too. I haven't actually "bought" anything from SW but they know the face. Funny how that works! It's not a bad thing though right?

Well, when I was in my 20s all of the bartenders at my local watering holes knew me by name, when I was in my 30s all of the baristas at my Starbucks knew my name, now that I am in my 40's the people at the tile and paint stores know me by name.....kinda goes to show who has gotten all of my money thru the years.....:)

I just went to the Home Depot a second time and they remembered me from the day before when they mixed Behr deck stain. The lady said, 'We don't color match stain, you'll have to pick something from the charts this time." So I picked several OOPS stains,marked down to $5 a gallon, took them home, mixed them all together and used that blend to stain my deck! Hope they've forgotton me by the next time I go in. lol

Yeah, but I've only been to this SW 3 times! EEEEK! My BM dealer knows me and all my kids and that's cool as I'd been shopping there for yrs., but 3 times?!

Don't get me wrong - I think it's great - I'm just embarassed that word traveled so fast that I was frequenting another SW store!

Oh yeah.

Over the course of three or four months, I've bought 25-30 sample quarts of paint from the local hardware store. After the second lot of four quarts, and numerous sample brushes, mini-samples and raiding of the fan-deck display, the cashiers stopped asking me for photo ID with my credit card, and the paint guys know me by name. Eeek indeed.

We have 2 Lowes's in town. Several years ago I was going to one or the other every day. One of the salesmen told me (with a straight face) "Ma'am, you know we really don't change out stock that often". I was so embarassed that I stopped going to that store for months!

LMAO!!!

Oh, I'm feeling so much better about myself now. When I was redoing my kitchen & bathroom, I spent *SO* much time at the various HD's nearby (I kept rotating them because it was too embarrassing) that I couldn't *wait* till I didn't have to go there anymore. (Now I do the same thing at Crate & Barrel and Room & Board. ;-))

I still remember trekking out to Expo in Long Island (I don't have a car, so it was indeed a hike) and spending FIVE HOURS there. Well, there were kitchen cabinets and counters and *SO* many bathroom faucets and shower fixtures, and then there was tile and sinks and shower doors and appliances, and on the way out finally I noticed the door handles but the cab was already waiting and I didn't have time to look. At some point I had rounded my way back into cabinets again, and the very nice saleswoman I had spoken to hours earlier saw me and looked *shocked* that I was still there!

I'm so sorry that store is gone now. I have great affection for it. :-)

Not so bad, I too am known at the SW!
And when they ask what are you working on now I think its a compliment.
I have slowed down some, my hubby is pleased with that.
And it speaks highly for a store that knows its customers on the first name basis, and can remember your name. Big box doesn't know and doesn't care.

ttodd, I was at my local BM dealer all the time when we bought this place. All the guys there knew me by name. I went in later on a Friday to get a certain red. Only my guy was mixing from an object I took in, not a swatch. A true artist, joker and patience of a saint (it took a looong time), come closely time he hit that red on the button and said wryly "Heck, you might as well go along with us now for our Friday after-work beer".

Alas there is no 12 step program, just peeps here who "get" it! ;D

I had a tile store owner remember me from 15 years prior, lol, when I had been searching for my kitchen floor. I'm sure it was my great beauty and charm, and he'd been wandering aimlessly, since, haha.

When we were remodeling not only did the guys at SW know me by name (and knew how I liked my coffee) but sadly, I was there so much that the paint contractors (who all show up at opening as I used to) knew me by name and I knew them LOL It would always be me and five or six paint contractors. SW staff makes us coffee, we bs, they tease me and ask if I need any more brushes (I have a bit of a fettish for brushes) and then they'd ask about the job or we'd gossip about there LOL I kinda miss that

Yesterday I went to my favorite "funky" store. A bit of furnishings, home decor, clothing, just about anything unusual they carry, both new and antique. I was looking for a dresser and in what I thought was my disquise (sloppy cloths). It's a bit of a fancy store but normally I can sneak in and out if I don't dress as if I'm shopping LOL but yesterday I got a big "HELLO where have you been? Hope everyone is well, hows the boy, babies, blah blah". Dang...no more sneaking for me LOL
