Selecting windows for new construction

Hi,

We are in the process of selecting new windows for our house. The builder uses casement style Marvin Integrity windows as the standard windows. We are trying to select between either colonial style windows with a) between the glass grill or b) without any grill (both options offered at no additional charge).

Looks like many of the newer properties in our town/ neighborhood have colonial style grilles, typically on windows in the front of the house. We wonder if there might a practical/weather related reason (we live in MN) for majority people going with windows with grilles OR whether having grilles in the front windows might be more due to current trend/curb appeal?

Some criticisms we've read in forum such as this are that windows with built-in grilles look 'cheap' and that casement windows with built-in grilles look 'wierd' when they are openend up - so that would seem to be a reason for not going with windows with built-in grilles. At the same time, it has also been suggested that if we can't decide between two choices, its best to go with whatever is more popular (which, in our town at this time, seems to be windows with grilles on the front of the house).

People have also advised that we should go with whatever we like. However, my wife and I have different opinions and preferences when choosing between plain windows versus windows with built-in grilles for the front of the house. We would appreciate some objective pros/cons of each option to help us make our decision.

Not to sound naive, but this is the first time we are building our own house - so we are going through the selection process for the first time. :) Would appreciate any feedback/suggestions to help us make our decision.

Thank you for your time reading this (rather long) post.

-Topper.
