Circuits and No Cavities for wiring

Hello,

Two questions....

What is an appropriate way to run wiring in a renovated kitchen where the wall construction is plaster directly on brick...i.e., I have no stud cavities.

I'm also looking for input into the what can be on what circuits for:

Applicances: Fridge, Above Range Microwave, Gas Range, Dishwasher with Disposal

Lighting: Undercabinet, over the sink, recessed and center ceiling light

Outlets on sink wall and outlets on range wall.

Surface wiring methods are one solution. As you already recognize, the construction of your premises limits the options available. I always say that WHO I go home to is more important that WHAT I go home to. Hope you find something acceptable.

I'll start this ball rolling:
You'll need surface mount wiring, such as wiremold. They have metal or plastic raceway. Here's a URL:

Fridge: should be on a dedicated 15A non GFCI cc't, you can also put a recessed electric clock recept on the fridge cc't, but that's it.
Microwave: If it's a built-in it should also be on its own dedicated cc't 15 or 20A.
Gas Range: Never wired one, hardly anyone buys them in Canada, too expensive. I'll assume they only require a 120V 15A cc't, I don't think it needs to be dedicated, others correct me if I'm wrong.
Dishwasher: 15 or 20A non-dedicated 120V cc't, some people hardwire them, some plug them in, even if they're built in. Check your local code.
Disposal: In my jurisdiction, they must be hard wired on a 15A or 20A dedicated cc't. Again, check your local code.
Lighting: You can put all your lighting on one 15A cc't.
Outlets: Anything on the countertop, within 1.5m of the sink in Canada, must be GFCI breakered or GFCI receptacled. In Canada, you can still use either 15A split recepts, or 20A non-splits. 20A non splits are preferred because they're cheaper and easier to GFCI protect than splits. Also, only 2 recepts/cc't are allowed for Canada. Adjacent recepts must be a minimum of 1.8m apart on the countertop.
There's lots more very specific code requirements for kitchens because of the grounding danger with the sink and taps. You should really get a copy of the code or better yet, a layman's version of the code requirements for the kitchen.
This should get you started. I'm sure lots of US posters will add to/correct this. Remember, all this info I posted is for the CEC, not the NEC or local code for you.

There are certainly a few things wrong. My intuition is that somebody changed out the panel and hooked up the wiring in a temporary manner, assuming they will be back to run new wires as something like the kitchen gets remodeled. It seems quite common for remodelers to get an electrician in to replace a panel while promising them the rest of the work, and then never calling them back. This is usually in order to get the best price and get the electrician out in the fewest hours possible, thinking they will be back to fix the temporary stuff at the appropriate time. This leaves unfinished work that nobody feels responsible to fix or don't know better. I have heard too many stories of this when being called to fix these messes. It seems that the "handyman" is always trying to keep as much money from the job as possible. The way they do that is to include the electrician's bid in with theirs, have the electrician make an appearance for the panel and temporary splices, and then do the rest of the work themselves while cutting corners and handing the owner a bill that includes the price for what a qualified electrician would have charged. This is common enough that I won't accept a remodel job unless I am paid in full up front, which keeps someone from thinking they can save money by finishing it themselves.

I am not a licensed electrician so take everything I say with a grain of salt but the way it reads to me is that you have a 220 run to your kitchen that was split into 110 runs by replacing your double breaker with two single breakers and splitting the powers to run two different circuits. If that is the case you do have some strange wiring as far as I have ever seen. To confirm this do you have you a 12-3 run out of the panel or two 12-2 lines and therefore have one neutral left unattached. I suspect that it is a 12-3 line. If that is the case then the electrician was being cheap and lazy as he is running one instead of two and then probably charging for two lines which would be illegal on top of unethical. At least I have never heard of a code allowing this. Your biggest issue in having two hots and one neutral is load balancing if I remember my electrical courses correctly. It has been ten years since I had them in college so my memory is pretty hazy as it isn't my day job so I won't speculate to much further but I did find this. "A balanced load in an electrical panel means that the current flowing through one leg is equal to the amount of current flowing through the other "hot" leg. The closer these numbers are, the more balanced the load. When the amperage is split up equally, the neutral current is canceled out. But when the current is placed all on one leg, the neutral must carry the entire load." So essentially by doing what they did your panel is unbalanced and you are forcing more current down you neutral lag therefore you neutral leg may potentially be undersized for the current it is carrying.

I am going to assume you have a metal octagonal box with nonmetallic sheathed cable running into it. First, you have too many wires in the box if it is a standard box. Second, you might have two cables under one clamp in the box. If someone tightened the clamps too tight, especially if there are too many cables in them, and then someone forced too many wires into the box, you could have enough damage to a hot wire's insulation at the clamp to cause the problem. Make sure that the metal of the light fixture over the box is isolated from the metal junction box as well, or you would be shorting out through an alternate route.

Yep, they can share a ground. The rule is that the ground has to be sized to the largest circuit in the conduit. In your case they are both 20 amp, so a single 12 gauge ground wire is fine.
