The summer trip ending from hell

My wife, bio-son and i had a nice vacation planned. Two weeks away! Wife has changed end of trip to see adult sd. I wasn't happy but went along with it. Then wife changed to now spend the night at the sd's place. It is a small apt. I volunteered to stay at local hotel: this way, after all that driving, i can enjoy a pool and a/c and my own space. Wife is adamant about us spending "family time together." how can i be wrong here?

You went along with the change of vacation plans. One point for Thurman. I'll give you a second point if you pick up the phone and book a room for the night you'll be in SD's town.

There is a major difference between 'family time together' and smashing four people into a shoebox...shoeboxes are not enjoyable for anyone and puts a burden on the host. SD is not set up for three houseguest. Even if SD graciously made the offer and might knock herself out being a great hostess and make you as comfortable as possible, I would decline.

I love my kids to pieces, but I don't spend the evening overnight in their home. Not that I'm not welcome. It'd be nothing to do with my kids, I'd be me. I like my own space, like driving away when I've had enough.

No reason though you can't still spend the waking hours of the evening with SD. Let her pick place of dining, the evening entertainment blah blah blah...she's hosting you in her town and you will be her guest. You can get up early from your refreshing slumber at hotel and all go out for breakfast together. Quality 'family time together' without cramping into a shoebox and invading privacy of anyone.

I could live without hearing Mother snore all night or Thurman pass gas in the morning.

Have a great vacation, Thurman. If wife wants to sleep over at her daughter's, book a room for son and you. Son is old enough to choice where he'll sleep, don't be angry if he rooms with his sister. If slumber parties are 'their' thing, let them have it. It's not my 'thing' and it's certainly nothing against my children.

I agree with JMT.
Sleep at a hotel, shower, get dressed, check out and go right to SD's for quality family time.
Can you spin it as "It'll be sooooo nice for you and SD to have a little time alone, etc etc"?

Thank you for putting words and humor to the frustration many of us have experienced in trying to get rid of a take over everything plant. I would love to know the answers to the 'assigned seating mineral' question and also be able to offer some tips to help you in your endeavor to get rid of it, but all I can do is wish you success. Combination of factors with annual weather being the most likely. Not every year is a good gardening year for any of us thanks to unusual weather patterns. Which is why it is so important to learn to monitor and note your local weather patters. You don't list your garden zone and Mass. has several ranging from 5b to 7a with very different planting dates. Your proper plant out date could be anywhere from mid-April to late May. See link below. Variety selection is another contributing factor. You only mention San Marzano but DTM (days to maturity or early, mid, or late season labels) apply to all vegetables. San Marzano is an 80-85 day, late-season variety. You may need to select early and mid-season varieties of things. lanted most of the seeds in Mid March Depending on your zone that may or may not be too late. But not everything get started at the same time. Eggplants and peppers require several more weeks to reach transplant size than tomatoes do. Squash works best direct seeded and doesn't tolerate transplanting well unless it is done before the 3rd true leaf develops. You don't mention anything about nutrients provided either as seedlings or when planted in the garden? Plants require feeding. Soil quality is yet another factor. So is watering regieme - most over-water and that causes root rot. Sun exposure? 8 hours per day. 6 hours minimum. Then there is the neglect/damage issue of your young seedlings you mention. One of the worst mistakes we can make is to start a bunch of seeds and then go on vacation or whatever as that is when they are the most vulnerable and require the most care. "Please stop OBSESSING over things to the point of needing POISON to do something." So if someone is dying of an infection or cancer, they should not use a potentially toxic antibiotic or definitely toxic chemotherapy medication to treat it? People should stop celebrating New Years with champagne? Ethyl alcohol is most definitely a poison - try drinking 500 ml of it undiluted and see what happens. POISON is just a scare word. Should be ban people from growing Aconitums, because they are very POISONous lol? "It boggles my mind how much energy and money is wasted on front lawns" Yes exactly why I agree, a lot of people probably shouldn't have them. Especially the morons who scalp their lawns 2-3 times a week, causing a lot of lawn mower emissions, and just end up with a big pile of crabgrass and Microstegium. (well it usually isn't must of a pile...more like a concrete covered in dingy green) If people in the midwest want to have a front lawn of native prairie - go for it. I guess you can call the fire department out to protect their house during the periodic once-a-decade burn down. BTW it won't have dandelions in it, because they are a Eurasian invasive. If people in the east want to have forests as a front yard (and back), go for it. Definitely better for the environment than a lawn scalped 2-3 times a week. I've leave it as a mental exercise for people to see through your "As a matter of fact, the dandelions actually make things grow better!" I guess they can pull N P and K out of a trans-dimensional portal, too.

I hate to bump a thread that once-upon-a-time had 'drama' (albeit, a couple posts now deleted for some reason...) but I think this is the most recent one mentioning the Udel live oak. I was annoyed with a long backup on I-95 (DelDOT seems to have an interminable construction project these days) so pulled off to see the arboretum again. Alas, the famous 'northernmost live oak on the east coast' is GONE. Replaced with a Stewartia for some reason, which at least bucks the natives-only trend! (of course there are native species, but this was an Asian one) This garden has had its ups and downs over the years. It went to hell during COVID, presumably due to a lack of volunteer access, then got back in shape. Now, it's sliding again. I narrowly escaped wandering into a huge patch of poison ivy; that really would have ruined my day to have to rush home for a shower. Also, their apparent wastefulness with rare plants is beginning to be tiresome. The Torreya jackii appears to have died. I can remember a few other rare plants that seemed to not get the early-years cosseting they merited. OTOH, things like Magnolia maudiae have really taken off and demonstrate that those can grow this far north, at least with a lot of shelter. I finally got to see M. yuyuanensis blooming this time, and was very underwhelmed. I hope the F2 hybrid of it that I bought from Camforest is an improvement! (hybrids often are...) A lot of the trees and shrubs are getting too crowded; the plantings, in narrow building alcoves, weren't really planned with the mature size of some of the specimens in mind. I sense they are probably entering the part of the 'cycle of institutional ineptness' where in a few years, someone new is going to come in with guns blazing and do something very drastic to the collection. I hope it's a drastic improvement but I hope for a lot of things that don't come true. 🤣 Btw, didn't take a pic of the M. maudiae, but is is now HUGE. Up around the 3rd story of the building, so >> 25'. Both it and M. yuyuanensis looked totally undamaged. Newark hit at least 5F this winter, maybe lower.

Tell wife that she and SD need a little mom/daughter bonding time while you and the bio-son ride the water slide at a hotel somewhere. Then, buy everyone brunch the next morning. You'll be a hero.

Thanks for asking. Not too bad. I did get a room alone. Delayed my participation as late as possible and it left only a few hours to kill before we headed out. Slightly annoying but not as awful as it could have been!

It would only have been awful because you made it so. Frankly with the hostility you have always displayed towards your stepdaughter, that she would even consider giving you houseroom shows she is the bigger person.
