The summer trip ending from hell

My wife, bio-son and i had a nice vacation planned. Two weeks away! Wife has changed end of trip to see adult sd. I wasn't happy but went along with it. Then wife changed to now spend the night at the sd's place. It is a small apt. I volunteered to stay at local hotel: this way, after all that driving, i can enjoy a pool and a/c and my own space. Wife is adamant about us spending "family time together." how can i be wrong here?

You went along with the change of vacation plans. One point for Thurman. I'll give you a second point if you pick up the phone and book a room for the night you'll be in SD's town.

There is a major difference between 'family time together' and smashing four people into a shoebox...shoeboxes are not enjoyable for anyone and puts a burden on the host. SD is not set up for three houseguest. Even if SD graciously made the offer and might knock herself out being a great hostess and make you as comfortable as possible, I would decline.

I love my kids to pieces, but I don't spend the evening overnight in their home. Not that I'm not welcome. It'd be nothing to do with my kids, I'd be me. I like my own space, like driving away when I've had enough.

No reason though you can't still spend the waking hours of the evening with SD. Let her pick place of dining, the evening entertainment blah blah blah...she's hosting you in her town and you will be her guest. You can get up early from your refreshing slumber at hotel and all go out for breakfast together. Quality 'family time together' without cramping into a shoebox and invading privacy of anyone.

I could live without hearing Mother snore all night or Thurman pass gas in the morning.

Have a great vacation, Thurman. If wife wants to sleep over at her daughter's, book a room for son and you. Son is old enough to choice where he'll sleep, don't be angry if he rooms with his sister. If slumber parties are 'their' thing, let them have it. It's not my 'thing' and it's certainly nothing against my children.

I agree with JMT.
Sleep at a hotel, shower, get dressed, check out and go right to SD's for quality family time.
Can you spin it as "It'll be sooooo nice for you and SD to have a little time alone, etc etc"?

Combination of factors with annual weather being the most likely. Not every year is a good gardening year for any of us thanks to unusual weather patterns. Which is why it is so important to learn to monitor and note your local weather patters. You don't list your garden zone and Mass. has several ranging from 5b to 7a with very different planting dates. Your proper plant out date could be anywhere from mid-April to late May. See link below. Variety selection is another contributing factor. You only mention San Marzano but DTM (days to maturity or early, mid, or late season labels) apply to all vegetables. San Marzano is an 80-85 day, late-season variety. You may need to select early and mid-season varieties of things. lanted most of the seeds in Mid March Depending on your zone that may or may not be too late. But not everything get started at the same time. Eggplants and peppers require several more weeks to reach transplant size than tomatoes do. Squash works best direct seeded and doesn't tolerate transplanting well unless it is done before the 3rd true leaf develops. You don't mention anything about nutrients provided either as seedlings or when planted in the garden? Plants require feeding. Soil quality is yet another factor. So is watering regieme - most over-water and that causes root rot. Sun exposure? 8 hours per day. 6 hours minimum. Then there is the neglect/damage issue of your young seedlings you mention. One of the worst mistakes we can make is to start a bunch of seeds and then go on vacation or whatever as that is when they are the most vulnerable and require the most care. Logic, I could tell you so many stories. They were so smart and very clever. My little female had a fascination about opening doors and gates. We watched with our own eyes as she learned how to kill the batteries in the collar just by keeping it beeping. The collar emits a warning beep prior to the shock. It gives the dog a chance to back-up. She would keep moving back and forth making the collar beep. After about 100 times, the battery would fail. She would jump on the gate and open the latch and off she went. Even the IF people couldn't believe it but came to the house to watch her from the window. The stories written here are so sad. I can't imagine living next to people like those discussed. I don't know what I'd do. We always had large properties and dogs. We always had fences. Although I never cared for the look of chain link, we always planted shrubs to hide the fence. We spent extra for attractive gates. Most people will not open a gate when dogs are present, even if friendly. I'm a great believer that good fences make good neighbors. Jane

((((Bugfarm)))) You tried with her and it was set up against you from the start. All through your postings one question kept going through my mind: where is the mother? You answered in the final post: absent. The biomom, as you say hasn't "contributed one dime to the kid's upbringing" nor does it sound like she contributed much else. Your stepdaughter is enormously angry and has little self esteem or she wouldn't be taking those pictures. Self-confidence and self-esteem come from a parent paying very close attention to a child and personalities are formed in the first few years. Inattention can have serious repercussions, as you've seen, and even result in psychiatric disorders. Some children with strong personalities simply take over the house when the parents abdicate. She doesn't trust anyone and she's learned that she can feel in control through manipulation and bad behavior, as flawed as her logic may be. She doesn't trust you because she can't trust her own mother. If you feel you've done the best you can with her, and it sounds like you have, then put your mind at rest and work on restoring harmony in your marriage. Your husband stepped in but it sounds as if he's let you do most of the work for a long time. I hope he's apologized for the physical abuse you endured. That is unacceptable that you would have to live in fear in that way under any circumstances. That should be made clear in the future. Bless you, because you obviously had the strength and determination to try to do what you felt was right. Ultimately though, his daughter is his responsibility, not yours even though she's been living in your house. You love him and you stood in. But the stepmother simply isn't part of "the family of origin." Even with much more well adjusted children I've found this to be true. Few of them will accept what you have to say and perhaps its time for you to stop trying at all. Wash your hands of her and let him step in and deal with her in the future. Of course you love her or you wouldn't have tried so hard. I think the poster who suggested there's another side to the story doesn't get this at all.

Tell wife that she and SD need a little mom/daughter bonding time while you and the bio-son ride the water slide at a hotel somewhere. Then, buy everyone brunch the next morning. You'll be a hero.

Thanks for asking. Not too bad. I did get a room alone. Delayed my participation as late as possible and it left only a few hours to kill before we headed out. Slightly annoying but not as awful as it could have been!

It would only have been awful because you made it so. Frankly with the hostility you have always displayed towards your stepdaughter, that she would even consider giving you houseroom shows she is the bigger person.
