protective film on anderson windows removal
Comments (6)The protective film is called Preserve and the exterior easy-clean coating (I would not call it a film though) is called NEAT. Using razor blades to remove the Preserve film will damage the NEAT coating, even if you may not see the damage it is still there. The Preserve will need to be warm in order to remove it. Do not try to remove it cold. Using a hair drier may help and then you will likely have to remove it strip by strip - it is still probably going to be a pain unfortunately. You are also likely to leave some adhesive behind. You can use acetone to remove the excess adhesive, but be very careful because while the acetone won't harm the NEAT coating, it will damage both the paint and coating of the window sash and frame and there is no warranty for that damage. If you can wait until spring it might be easier...but that is up to you now. Good luck...See MoreWindow film removal

Comments (293)Many, if not most, of the issues with purchasing through a box store, is that you are purchasing through a box store. You rarely get experts in the field working there. The person staffing the desk could have sold light bulbs the week before. Even if they figured out the quoting system, there is still the ordering system that has to interface with the manufacturer electronically. If you don't know how to do that, the order never gets into the manufacturer's production que. That has happened way more times that you want to know for special order merchandise! Something with a 30 day lead time turned into 7 months, becuase the original order was never transmitted properly. And no one looked deep into the details. They just saw it as "on order", and that was that....See MoreSmokey window film
Comments (9)Yep, I was so interested in the pattern of the failure that I missed it completely. The last picture is certainly definitive. The pattern itself is very reminiscent of a particular resin laminated glass failure from the mid 1990's and I recall that Andersen might have had a few of those products at one time, but I had never heard of an Andersen unit that had failed for that reason - again given it was a long time ago. When I saw the "crack" pattern in the third picture it really made me look closer at the pattern because that was one of the tell-tales of the resin laminated glass failures. I can't remember ever seeing the "cracking" pattern from a simple seal failure, so that IGU still has me interested, but I agree since it's an older IGU that it's simply seal failure - if a very interesting one as a quality guy if not to the homeowner who has to replace it. I would guess that the IGU is from the 1980s or even earlier and it absolutely needs replacing....See MoreRWmaine
