Painted that trim piece on the stairs. Quick ?.

I painted the trim piece last night.

*Note: Yes, my stairs have issues. :) Wall is offset. At a later date hopefully the wall trim piece will be removed and the detail issues at the top of the steps will be corrected. This is a temporary band aid. Blend was what I'm going for right now.

My paint line towards the door is a crooked. Before I bother to fix it, should I just make the paint line straight up (from the half round piece) instead of angled or paint the entire trim piece (to the oak piece/door jamb) the wall color?

I do think it's blended better now.

I think I would make it straight up corresponding with that tread. (From the quarter round, like you said)

I would also consider painting the oval medallion on the handrail side in the wall color, since it is not oak like the other one on the baluster side. That way it will also just blend in.

My vote is to paint the quarter round all the way to its end (at the oak piece on the floor), and the trim piece above it to its end (where it meets the door trim). You're a busy bee!

Replace ALL the trim? Dude...it's a 4,000 sq. ft. house. There's wood trim, wood built-ins, wood doors, wood library paneling, wood banisters and stairs, wood everywhere. Are you volunteering the $50,000+ I'd need to do that? I accept cash, checks, and money orders. :) Okay, I know you're right. I'm asking for the impossible, so let's back up and let me get more specific and practical. Why do you think the finish is varnish? Given the long drying time of varnish, would a builder use that on a house with tons of trim? Wouldn't shellac be more likely? I was thinking the finish was an orange shellac that was brushed on in one step. I'm told if I use denatured alcohol I can test the finish...and if it's shellac, the finish should disolve immediately. And if that's the case, couldn't I use new shellac touch up the scratches...basically use a tiny brush and go over the scratches to hide and refinish? Then maybe polish with wax? Has anyone done this? Is there a good resource for information on this...something more detailed than the Minwax website? This must be pretty common. I know I could go the wax stick or stain pen route, but those don't last. I don't need perfect, just good and long lasting. Most of the imperfections are pretty minor and haven't damaged the wood. You know...ordinary wear and tear. I'm okay with a little "patina," I just don't like the scuffy look of the wood right now.

Thanks for all the comments. First let me add that this staircase is not a focal point in the house. It is in the back of the house, and originally had a door at the bottom. busybee3 - Yes the rest of the trim in the house is white. Good point... mayflowers - Yes it is 3" board up there. All of the trim in the house is 2-piece (flat boards with base cap). Some of the original molding is taller. I was torn on painting it white or brown. I thought painting it the same as the stairs/landing would tie it together. So if I paint that white, then I would either have to paint that little triangle of stringer white, or have a little brown triangle there by the first step after the landing. justgotabme - Yes, I thought about painting the risers, but they were white before and I didn't like them. And I don't have a lot of time left to repaint them. We hope to wrap everything up and get the house listed next week.

They just left...it is GORGEOUS! I will post pics, but want to wait for the weekend. Dd's bed is in, but the mattress doesn't come in til Thursday. Might as well wait & do a big reveal, lol! Thanks again for all of your help!

Are you going to just replace the quarter round? If so, you need to scrape the excess paint off the wall. A razor scraper use vertically will do that. There will probably be damage to the paint above the excess paint line. If that line is just over the ridged line, shoe molding might work. Shoe molding is similar to quarter round but wider on one side. If the damage is higher than what shoe would cover, the fix is custom trim, at least with the thickness. That means special tools(normal for many woodworkers, but not for DIYers) like jointers, planers, and shapers/router tables are needed. Tools your dad may have had and stuff his woodworking friends may have.

I was struggling for words to say what I was thinking and then read Hoosiergirl's response. She expressed exactly what I was thinking. I agree with Palimpsest about painting the oval medallion.

I'd just paint the whole trim piece, too. I guess the medallion covers their work or something? 'Cause I'd just remove it otherwise.

Change the rosette to oak (shouldn't be that hard, if you have to take it off to paint anyway might as well change it out to match the other, painting it with the railing attached would be tough), leave the bead (whatever profile it is) white, paint the flat part above it the wall color up to the edge of the oak nosing. That way it'll look like the stringer meets the nosing (like it's supposed to). I think I posted this b4

Sorry, last 2 pics are the same - here's with the little bit you painted the wall color repainted in white. Horrible Paint job, I think it would better IRL, esp. from a distance.

Of course, if you don't mind repainting more in white, I still think it would look best to come straight up where the stringer levels out in white, everything to left of that the wall color, like the one I had "drawn" when we were talking about cutting the trim. I tried "painting" it instead of drawing lines

Thanks for the ps Ajsmama! So far I've tried it all the above. It's currently all painted the wall color and I think it looks goofy. I think it equally looks goofy the other ways though but looks better from a distance. I wonder how many people will really notice if I bring the wall paint straight up from the half round and keep the other side white? Think I'll change it back to that way.
