Moving to Arizona

We have made a decision to leave Florida and move to Arizona in order to be closer to the children and grandchildren. My favorite magazines have always been Southern Living and Coastal Living because they are so appropriate to the area we live in. I am excited about the move and we are looking at a Santa Fe style home with lots of wooden beams and niches. This will be a totally different and new decorating experience for me. Does anyone have any great recommendations for decorating and gardening magazines that would relate to the SW style?

I think Sunset Magazine is supposed to be a great magazine that has a bit of southwest niche.

I'm right "next door" in New Mexico and my all-time favorite decorating AND gardening magazine is Phoenix Home & Garden. Love, love, love it! Some people say that they feature too many higher end homes, but I think that it's perfect for getting great ideas. Finding a more reasonably priced version of something you like is never a problem if you put your mind to it ;^D . . . and there are tons of great stores that advertise in PH&G. BTW, a subscription to it is MUCH more reasonable that buying separate issues at the store.

You could use newspaper to make an excellent sleeve, and use making tape to hold it together. I don't know the size of your plants, if they are that large you would need a large UHaul, lay them down on their sides, and to protect them you make need carpeting so you won't get stuck and to protect their spines, This all depends on the size of the plants. 1 gal-4"- 8" - 5 gal or larger. I would not use anyting damp either, I have seen shipments of small plants barely rooted just wrapped in paper napkins dry. Shipped in from SWitzerland no damage. You don't want to put them near the top of the furniture because heat rises, but this is a good time to move them, if they are in only 4" to 6" pot just set them into card board packing boxes, to hold them up right, if only small pots put them plastic flats, put newspaper inbetween any spaces so the plants won't shift. If going across border, you may need to remove all soil and wash off the roots and spay them with Safer's soap, do not use Neem oil on the roots. Bring a bottle of alcohol mixed 50% with water in case you need it. Making sure that they are spotless. I have never been stopped at the border with flats of plants, but you can never tell. You might look at Prescott or Prescott Valley. They are at 5100 ft. and the weather is more moderate than at lower elevations. They have the occasional snow storm in the winter and some cold weather, monsoon season in July, and summers are warm but not like Phoenix. Blue skies, beautiful mountain features. Great place for outdoor activities. Embry Riddle Aeronautic University is there too, but it's not a real university town like some others because ER is a pretty small specialized school. There are many retirees there and people from Phoenix have second homes to get out of the heat.

Hi Joshua, I just moved to Tucson last July from the San Francisco bay and love it! It is a far, far different gardening climate, but there are so many fantastic plants that thrive here. -Do you have a copy of the Sunset Western Garden Book? I find it just as useful here as I did in California, and it pretty much covers any plant I am considering adding to the garden. Salvia clevelandii and Salvia greggii do very well here and are readily available. I would imagine that Romneya coulteri would do well, since it is adapted to the hot, dry conditions of the California chaparral. If by Pericallis you mean the plant commonly referred to as "Florist's Cineraria", I do see these sold in the nurseries in late winter/early spring, so I am sure you can grow them as a cool season annual in a moist, shady spot. However, they aren't going to naturalize as they do in San Francisco, which has the perfect climatic conditions for them. The poppies and cosmos will do fine; A friend of mine seeds a bed of mixed annuals every year, that often includes bachelors' buttons, mixed poppies, sweet alyssum, etc. and they put on a lovely show.

I'm SE of Phx - out in the boonies.

I also love the southwestern decorating. my sister has a santa fe style house down the road from me. If I were building or buying that's what I'd want also. love them!

I have a winter home (hope to be permanent in a couple of years) near Tucson. I have found some interesting decorating ideas in the home section of azcentral.com.

GardenWeb has an Arizona garden forum, where you can get some good southwest gardening ideas and advice.

In which area of Arizona will you be located?

We have been looking in the Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek area. We're having a difficult time finding something. There are foreclosures and short sales aplenty but we have had some bad experiences trying to deal with them and are now starting to shy away from them. We also are very picky and have many requirements. I am just now getting used to the fact that there can be a beautiful awesome home on a long narrow dirt road. This is truly a new experience. I have seen the coyotes, rattlesnakes, havalinas (sp?). The first time I saw the desert I thought it was horrible. Now I see beauty in it everywhere. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Phoenix Home and Garden looks like it is just what I want.

Come on out to Fountain Hills. We are located just east of North Scottsdale. The town has a "small town" feel, and we are close to everything. Here's a link to our local newspaper (for which I work). www.fhtimes.com.

I think you might enjoy Scottsdale better than Cave Creek or Carefree, especially if you like to shop. I know a few people in the Cave Creek area and they do have more javelinas, scorpions, coyotes, etc. because the area is more mountainous, desert like versus a more urban area like many parts of Scottsdale. Plus they are always coming down to Scottsdale almost every day for shopping, work, etc. There are a lot of bargains. Whatever type of neighborhood you like, you can find it here in Phoenix. I get thrilled seeing the mountains every day as I drive to work.
