Redoing old wood windows/using wood strips vs caulking?
Comments (1)The best advice I can give is to get yourself a copy of the book "Working Windows" by Terance Meany. It's the bible for all things relating to old windows. You aren't clear about how/where you're proposing using caulk. Could you explain further?...See MoreLots of wood in house: vinyl vs wood vs fibrex
Comments (14)Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. Please keep your thoughts coming. We have now decided we definitely want to do a COMPLETE INSTALL and not just an insert. We live in WI and are considering the following few companies as of now: 1) WASCO http://www.wascowindows.com/ They come recommended by others, have a great reputation, build their own windows (can visit the local plant), and a solid warranty. They get the highest ratings on AngiesList.com. Salesman did a nice job. Our main concerns exist with almost every vinyl company which is matching the interior vinyl wood grain to the 1 x 4 wood trim we have around every window (and throughout our house as trim on everything such as floors, entrances into rooms, etc...) AND losing some window space because vinyl takes up more space. 2) STANEK by "Great Day Improvements" http://www.greatdayimprovements.com/ They too came recommend by others, have a good reputation, sell Stanek windows, and receive a solid review on AngiesList (WASCO has higher reviews). Salesman did a great job - very personable and not pushy at all. Our main concerns exist with almost every vinyl company which is matching the interior vinyl wood grain to the 1 x 4 wood trim we have around every window (and throughout our house as trim on everything such as floors, entrances into rooms, etc...) AND losing some window space because vinyl takes up more space. 3) Lowes. A local contractor we trust dearly is recommending the local Lowes store because the installer does AMAZING work according to this contractor we trust. The contractor is telling us to make sure we get this specific installer. He trusts the head guy and this specific installer to do a fantastic job. We meet with the head guy next week. They did this installer's house and he loves the results AND the price. The contractor has high standards. Comments (18)The provia storms are very good. Price is fine, maybe a hair high if it does not include wrapping, but its a great price if it does. I agree overall with the advice provided so far on replacements vs storms, it really depends on the individual circumstances. It can be hard to justify spending that much without getting he other added benefits of replacements ( ease of cleaning, lower maintenance , potentially enhanced property value, better energy efficiency, etc), however if your existing windows can be reconditioned to the point of operating smoothly and looking good, adding the storm to that can definitely get you pretty close in those areas but with cost savings and maintaining the original integrity of the home. As wow alluded to, you could certainly take those dollars that you save and put them to air sealing , insulation , etc in other areas of he home and increase your energy savings exponentially....See Moremore pretty wood...started on stripping windows..
Comments (11)Becky I love it when the weather gets a little cooler and I can work without sweating to death ! The orbital sander really does all the work ...all I do is guide it. I use 40 grit to start and then 60 then 100 and then by hand I use 240 for finish. Each new project is always a surprise :) in the way of grains. mpmg. Thank you !! I am going to have mirrors cut to fit the backs of a couple. The large arch window is going over something...I am not sure where yet...either a doorway or a bed. I may try using the sections of window panes as frames for music for the piano room...will need to see how to stick the music in w/o damaging it. They have Howard's restore a finish in our local paint store and the local antique mall. You can find it at Home Depot .I had heard about it here 1st...I am so glad ...it is the 1st thing I have tried that is so easy and actually does what it says. Thank you for such enthusiastic praise....See More- 11 years ago
